Jaguar S-Type - Mystery Engine Seizure 23 Aug 2010 (Forum)
Recovery garage (in Dubai and not the Jaguar dealer) is claiming I have a seized engine - I am astonished since car was running perfectly - I had done a run of about 150 km with nothing untoward. Not the slightest indication of overheating and in view of my location and previous problems on that score I always keep an eye on the temp gauge and it was absolutely normal. -
Vauxhaull Corsa CDTI - Black smoke 1 Jun 2010 (Forum)
I have been trying to fix this car for a while now and i'm sure it is some thing Ovious but i have tried all sorts to fix it and i'm having no joy. I have ruled out Sensors (swaped them with a good running car and they worked fine), Timing (the cam and crank lock up spot on), Compression (its 350psi evenly across the four bores), Blocked Exhaust or Inlet (checked all inlet pipes for blockages or holes, tried running it with no down pipe on, new turbo fitted) EGR was replaced not too long ago but i don't know how to check it is working? -
Bought a "Scrap Car" 23 Oct 2009 (Forum)
He was given the keys, was also given a hand to push the car out from the garage by the clearance people. I was offered the car because it was just too good to be run in - its no Concourse valuable car, just a car that could be made into something descent - and i purchased it for £200.00. I applied for a log book - which i received, Taxed and Mot'd it and all was fine until a week after doing this i get a knock on the door from "surly" CID. -
Toyota - Servicing my 4WD Toyota Hiace camper 27 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Once I decided to look around for other garages, I remembered that I know a rather impressive garage here in Bradford which operates mainly as a van and car-hire outfit. They maintain their vehicles themselves, and I have hired some machines from them which have been run up to very high mileages but still run beautifully -- I was particularly impressed with a Mondeo estate that had over 250,000 miles on the clock but still ran beautifully. My thinking is that a garage which maintains its own vehicles up to a high mileage will know what it's doing and work to decent standards, and they have given me some encouraging estimates over the phone. -
Vauxhall Vectra C (2002 - 2008) - Trade Sales 22 Feb 2009 (Forum)
We've been punting around for a new family car and have settled on a Vectra C as a good value bet. As they are on run out now and have never been tremendoulsy loved there are some real bargains to be had on 9-18 month old models. Yesterday I had a run down to Trade Sales in Slough to look at a 57 Vectra 2.2 Elite Estate Auto. -
Vauxhall Corsa C (2000 - 2006) - 2001 1.2 cuts out - possible fuel pump problem 9 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Hi, I have a 2001 corsa with 81,000 miles petrol sxi 1.2 16v. Over the last few months it runs well then started stopping. First time it happened I was driving and the engine just stopped - lucky was not on motorway. It turned over but did not fire up!! AA came out and after an hour he looked at the fuel pump under the rear seat. -
Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 02 2.0 petrol erratic idle and stalling problems 14 Jul 2008 (Forum)
The car struggles a bit to pull away and sometimes stalls but once it is moving and reving a bit higher it runs fine, no odd noises or vibration as far as I can see. The problem started immediately after I'd accelerated the car hard from rest and rev'ed it to about 4500 or 5000 in first and second ....next time I came to idle the problem was there. -
Citroen Saxo (1997 - 2003) - 2000 1.6 No power at all, any ideas? 28 May 2008 (Forum)
It's as if the power is not getting from the battery to the car engine management system (assuming Saxo's have one?). Oh and when the car is running we also have the normal airbag light warning but..... I think that is likely to be the connectors under the seat and not at all to do with this issue. Have asked a Citroen garage for an opinion, all they want is for me to open my cheque book up for them to have a look and run diagnostics. -
Volvo S60 (2000 - 2009) - 2.0T S - 124k FVSH - good buy? 13 Mar 2008 (Forum)
I know nothing about these cars in terms of what goes wrong with them, what to look for, and what they cost to service and run. Fuel economy. He really doesn't care about this and genuinely doesn't monitor it. What can I expect from it on a gentle motorway run? It's not going to be a diesel Mondeo, but neither does it go (or sound) like one. -
You, experiences, leading or trailing edge? Cars 14 Dec 2007 (Forum)
So to conclude, All of these experiences have affected my choice of cars and I`m happiest just forward of the `trailing edge`regarding cars, new models and production runs. How about you? regards ;) -
Peugeot 406 Coupe - Fault Code help! 18 Apr 2007 (Forum)
I really don't want to have to take it back to the pug garage as they charge an arm and a leg!! At the moment the car still runs absolutely fine and I just clear the fault code to put the Engine diagnostic light out for another week or two til it decides to do it again. Anyone giving me a final working solution to this will earn themselves a suitable reward! -
Global Cool ! 1 Feb 2007 (Forum)
If the answer is is a positive figure then that is the amount of extra carbon produced by buying and running a hybrid, for most people the answer will be a positive figure. I would be interested in you thoughts on this. Regards. _____________________ http://www.global-cool.com/ -
MOT Testers and wheel bearing play 29 Jul 2006 (Forum)
One occasion on my own car I adjusted them a bit tight to get through with no problems and forgot to slacken them later, - and managed to ruin the bearings on the next long run that I did. Surely this creates a situation that is more dangerous than a slack bearing? Now today I've just had my car fail an MOT retest on this same issue. After the original retest I did the same as usual - adjust them just as tight as I can to still be safe, yet the tester is still not satisified has refuesed an MOT and has gone on holiday for the next week - by which time the Tax will have run out! -
Pug 306 HDi Fuel Problems - HELP! 21 Jun 2006 (Forum)
It was taken to a Peugeot main dealer who diagnosed failed injectors 1 & 3. As a result all 4 were changed as per Pug procedures. The car still would not fuel or run correctly. The fuel pump was changed, as Peugeot said there could be swarf in the fuel system. No Change. I've got the following info from the dignostics machine to see if anyone can help: Diesel Pressure 290 Bar Injector Quantity 14.1 mm3/l Main Injector 1.7 Idle - 6.2 Flat Injector 4 -2.5 Injector 3 +1.9 Injector 2 -5.0 Injector 1 +5.3 The ECU is coming up with the following fault codes: 1404 - PreHeating or PostHeating Control 0201 - Cylinder No 1 injector or circuit - Open circuit or short to Ground/Battery The car is still not running. -
Tyres - legal? 28 Oct 2005 (Forum)
The difference seems to be about 2mm (ish), suggesting that the tyre is designed so that when the edges have no tread, the central area has the legal minimum. So the whole tyre "runs out" of tread at the same time, assuming even wear. Now, IIRC the law prescribes that that centre area needs to be 75% of the tyre width. This is where I get confused. Michelin's centre area is 5.5 inches, exactly 50% of the (11 inch) tyre width. -
Change Nissan QX back to Mondeo? 5 Apr 2004 (Forum)
Any comment helps, positive or negative. Comment from Michael R would be especially useful as you run one. Current 1995 Nissan QX running cost is 28 p per mile, inclusive of all cost (inc. car mats, polish, etc.), after 30k miles. From my previous calculation, a de-fleeted Mondeo will be at 19-20p per mile, keeping it for 5-6 years. -
thoughtless drivers - a question 21 Nov 2003 (Forum)
on the way into work this morning - I'm approaching a Y junction where the A571 and 49 join. 100 yds before the junction is a street used as a rat run. Traffic on the A49 is heavier so people cut through to save a few seconds over a hundred yards. Someone has come down the rat run and pulled out onto the A571 even though there is no room, so they are blocking the lane coming AWAY from the junction - result, traffic coming out of the junction stops, the junctions blocked and nobody can go anywhere Then there is the two-lane roundabout at Aspull, where traffic waiting to turn right can't because of the mondeo blocking the outside lane, even though he could have let it through by waiting for five seconds, and the queue of traffic he is in will be moving at walking pace for three miles Then there is the person (gender unknown, totally black tinted windows on king-cab pickup truck) dropping kid off at school. -
Rover 414i Rusting/Split Spark Plugs. 22 Dec 2002 (Forum)
Investing another few hundred on another one when it dies is not a problem so I'm not concerned about curing any problems but, from an academic point of view I'd love to know: 1) What splits that No 2 plug? 2) What rusts the plugs? [2] I used to do two 1.5 mile runs a day but there's been no short runs now since October. 3) Is it possible to free the solid plugs? WD40, pouring engine oil down? [2] 4) Compression on No 2 is 90. Good or Bad? [1] 1 & 3. No 4 is Helicolied and will remain untouched for ever. ;-) [2] Beyond the Aluminium/Iron rust battery interface there must be some something else. 6 months for plugs to rust in solid is crazy. [4] [3] Ok Q3 isn't academic. -
VW Polo (2002) - VW Polo poor idling 9 Apr 2014 (Forum)
If you use it for a long run, the MIL lamp goes out, so it's only idling and short runs that have this particular issue. Last Friday, my wife was on the school run, and the oil light came on. Just orange, which signals oil getting low. -
Risks buying certain 3yr old cars 24 May 2007 (Forum)
So IMHO, some particular `cult`models are a real risk these days, far more than in days gone by. Then there is the petrol into common rail diesel and running it 40 miles until it finally chugs to a halt, quietly part exchanged and coming soon as a nice " someone else has taken the initial depreciation 3 year old" to a dealer near you. As for me? There`s no way I`m going to buy a small sub £8,000 car used, I`ll take the hit on buying new, then keep it 15yrs.
