  • Merc B class - Manual -v- Automatic, Diesel -v- Petrol 7 Aug 2010 (Forum)
Every 2 months it will get an 80 mile motorway run. Total about 6,000 miles/year. Even so, the salesman insists that there are no problems (DPF or glow plugs) with modern Merc diesel engines and that as petrol and diesel cars cost the same, the diesel works out cheaper to run. We’d be very grateful for any advice on those two questions for the B class: Manual –v- Automatic Petrol –v- Diesel   With many thanks
  • Skoda Karoq - Possible Purchase 30 Jun 2021 (Forum)
However it's a big heavy brute and you just don't get that impression that there are supposed to be 200 horses there.. Especially with the annoying turbo lag that is has, and I read somewhere that the DPF strangles it (don't know if true or not) our 2017 2.0d Focus ST rated at 180 BHP had way more torque and felt a lot more powerful . However I have grown used to it so I know what to expect from it.  But I can see some big bills coming up soon (DPF is getting clogged up, the rear ARB bushes are mentioned by the garage as to need replacing in the future) and I can seem to get a good price for the Mondeo, so now is as good a time as any.
  • Volvo V60 - Mad to buy a used diesel? 30 Jul 2020 (Forum)
My commute is short (about 15 miles each way) but is 90% motorway and I don't tend to do lots of short trips so I don't see DPF problems being a major worry. What I'm not sure on are: Increased servicing costs - do diesels actually cost more to service as a rule, or do they just have more to go wrong in terms of DPF, EGR valves etc?
  • any - who adds 2SO to their diesel fuel 1 Jun 2011 (Forum)
In other words, the 2-stroke oil has a much lower ash-content as diesel, when burned. This proven fact delays the DPF (diesel particulate (soot) filter) to clogg, and the "burn free" process of the DPF will be much less. One more information: in Germany we have to present our cars every 2 years to the TUV -Technical Supervision Organisation - who will check, amongs others, the pollution of petrol and diesel engines.
  • Any - How clean is your exhaust tailpipe?! 25 Oct 2023 (Forum)
It meets Euro 5 emissions regs, so should we venture to London or other urban centres in it, we’d likely have to fork out for some sort of ULEZ charge. It has a DPF which appears to be serving its intended function, as wiping a finger inside the end of the exhaust doesn’t result in a mucky/sooty finger. My 2020 ‘clean’ Kuga 2.5 PHEV with a petrol engine and plug in hybrid capability is Euro 6 and deemed sufficiently clean to dodge any ULEZ money grabs.
  • Citroen C5 - Citroen C5 2.0 HDI 114k miles a good choice or not 17 Mar 2023 (Forum)
Anyone know what these cars are like and if they are generally sturdy and dependable enough to last the next few yrs? I have heard the shocks can be an expensive job, wiper motors go and the DPF could need a look at soon, but anything he should be aware of before committing?
  • Dacia Duster 2019 - New 2019 Dacia Duster 1.3 Petrol versus 1.5 Diesel 17 Feb 2020 (Forum)

  • Can anyone Help? - A very cheap car to give/or free. 19 Oct 2018 (Forum)
They were given (it turns out) loaned an Audi a4 estate about 15 months ago after their previous car had dpf/oil pump/clutch probems and they live on a very very tight budget.  One neighbour let them use his car for a while, but now they need basic transport. credit is not an option so here we go!
  • Help pick an SUV, auto, petrol Max £16K 5 Jun 2018 (Forum)
Must be high seating (so SUV think), petrol only (conditions are always town driving so don't want diesel, DPF issue etc), automatic. Under 16K and ideally year 17 on so have some manufacturers warranty. Also like the look of Android Auto/Apple CarPlay for phone connection with a nice large touchscreen. Not too bothered on inbuilt sat nav as can use the phones sat nav as only used sparely anyway.
  • Honest John’s Motoring Agony Column 21-01-2018 Part 2 23 Jan 2018 (Forum)
Again, with diesels - a manufacturer is recommending an owner doing 25 miles a WEEK or 100+ a month just to guarantee it passively regenerates the DPF. So all that extra mpg they're getting over petrol engined cars is essentially wasted just to burn off some soot. Just shows how ridiculous it is buying a diesel if you either don't do mostly motorway type driving (even on lower mileage, but then you get far less of a benefit from the better mpg than petrol if you do very low mileage) or over 20k miles (preferably 25k) pa and a regular (at least once a week if not more) amount on faster-moving roads.
  • VW - VW Diesels - which one? 19 Oct 2017 (Forum)
2.0TDI PD 170bhp - Siemens injectors - very troublesome engine with a high rate of injector faliures, cracked injectors looms, and DPF issues. 2.0TDI CR 140 + 170bhp - Siemens injectors - generally better due to redesigned injectors, but still suffers from injector faliures
  • Audi A6 / A3 - Nearly new cars 16 Aug 2017 (Forum)
My annual mileage is around 12k per year so not quite enough to justify diesel, however most of my trips are a minimum of 50 miles so diesel wouldn't be a problem from a DPF clogging perspective. My budget is around £25k (will take out a loan @ 2.8% but have the means to settle it if things take a turn for the worse). Now, I can find a fair number of petrol A3's in a good spec for this budget ('66' plate onwards) or I can go the 'luxury' route and plump for an A6 in 3.0 diesel format.
  • VW Sharan TDi - Extended warranty recommendations 4 Aug 2017 (Forum)
The only one I looked at is VWs own and to be honest it looks good to me covering everything other than a list of named exclusions but the main thing is it covers what I see as the high risk items DSG, turbo, injectors, fuel pump, EGR, SRC / AdBlue system, catalyst but only covers the DPF for internal failure but not from getting blocked, all the sensors are covered. £277 for a years cover with £100 excess and 10K miles limit.   I hate taking the first quote I get and these thing look like a bit of a mine field so any recommendations would be helpful.

Don't forget that a recent study has found that some new Direct Injection Petrol Cars, actually put out more damaging particulates than pre-DPF diesels!. One fact found from these tests was that an EU6 petrol was actually found to be far more damaging to health than an EU5 Diesel. But I suspect the G'ment won't tell you that now they are on something of a revenue roll. They'll just get around to penalising you for owning one at a later date.
  • Jaguar X-Type 2.0d - Positive Story 22 Feb 2016 (Forum)
We're all used to horror stories and reading HJ too much with accounts of failed DPFs, ECUs, etc. and huge repair bills is enough to give you nightmares and visions of imminent bankruptcy.  So here's a positive story - I think so, anyway. Took the car (2004, 157k) in for service and MoT today to my local trusted indy.
  • Volvo V50 (2004 - ) - 2.0d - any good, and a few questions? 11 Oct 2015 (Forum)
I know a few people with high mileage examples of these engines (in different cars) that have had no issues at all, so if it is the same engine, I'm happy. I am very concerned about the DPF on the Euro IV models - they do a lot of short journeys. Is this the type that needs a regular blast to clear it out, or is it the fluid based system? If there's any worries on this, we'll try and find a Euro III model.
  • Peugeot 307 SW - No/Low Turbo Power 8 Feb 2015 (Forum)
The problem I have now is that there is next to no power from the engine. This car has cost me a small fortune in the last 6 months. The dual mass clutch let go, then the DPF went faulty and since the Dual mass was done the car has very low power. Dual Mass was repalced with a standard clutch and flywheel by a garage and the car was quite sluggish to drive. Then the "Anti Polution Fault" message came up so I plugged in my code reader and replaced the faulty parts (Cap Sensor & MAF Sensor) Then I got a message saying the additive was at minimum so I filled it and reset the counter.
  • Toyota Verso 1.8 petrol 2009 ,very low mpg 2 Feb 2015 (Forum)
Is it worthy to invest in better tyres like mich.saver + or look around for other vehicle, even diesel version ( 2.0 d4d) although I do only 8-9k/per year , read about some problems with dfw and dpf from lates 2010 in verso, if its  true. thanks
  • VW - Need some advice on buying a family car for £2-4k 6 Jan 2015 (Forum)
We need boot space for a buggy and the weekly shop. So far I have been thinking of a TDI Touran or Passat estate, however concerned with the dreaded DPF's. We have had 1.9TDI's in the past (in Bora body) and was very happy with it however now that size car would be inadequate. Should I stay clear of the 2L TDI? I wouldnt mind something with some torque (after all i need some pleasing).
  • Mondeoondeo - best family auto estate 18 Aug 2014 (Forum)
My options so far are : Mondeo estate 163bhp Titanium X auto Insignia estate 163 bhp auto VW Passat estate 177 ps DSG Skoda Superb estate 1.8 TSI DSG Volvo XC60 D4 181 auto (dreaming…)   Most of these are diesel, and whilst petrol is an option new, it seems most fleet cars that appear on the second hand market are diesel. In view of the bad press on diesels and DPFs I would rather have petrol.   Which is the best of the bunch and is there any other cars I should consider.   I could wait until March before buying.
