We need to replace our 2005 BMW 320d, which we both enjoy driving, with its rapid acceleration. Ideally, we would like a used car with a little more headroom....
  • Can you recommend a 'smooth' small car? 30 May 2014 (Ask HJ)
I am 80 years old and own a Volkswagen Up auto, which I want to replace. I really don't like the Up and want a smooth automatic for town driving. Can you...

My 2007 Toyota Auris was requested to go back to the dealer following its first service as they wanted to check the brake disc due to possible corrosion....
  • Nosey Ford Fiesta - what's the cause? 25 Feb 2014 (Ask HJ)
I have just bought a 2004 Ford Fiesta, but it sounds like it has got noisy tappets that don’t quieten, even when warm. I’ve read you can flush engine then...

  • Where can my twins learn to drive cheaply? 2 Nov 2012 (Ask HJ)
I am a widow with 17-year-old twins who are keen to learn to drive. I do not want them to drive my 2006 Honda Civic and I do not have the patience or time...
  • any - funny prang 30 May 2011 (Forum)
I said to him 'I saw everything '  , he then proceeds to chat with the driver of the car, a totally battered white P reg Honda.  She eventually emerges -  lady is at least 90 y.o , If I'd been 5 metres further, she's have crushed me against the Maser   Now, not really relevant , but a backdrop  :  Both drivers Jewish , and to our astonishment , the old bat wags her finger and croaks '  It's your fault !!
  • Signum Rambles on...... 15 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Goodness me what a difference. A marginally harder ride but so much more direct in feel. Admittedly the old ones were pretty shot but were just still legal so perhaps any new tyres would have been an improvement. The best bit is that they are a VX approved "straight swop" and require no modification to the car.
  • Honda Accord Tourer - Views 26 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Well I decided the old Civic was getting a bit long in the tooth at seven years old and a bit boring so after a month or so of consideration and checking prices, I went out to the local Honda Main Dealer on Friday and bought a 2.4 EX Honda Accord Tourer . 04 plate. one owner car, 24 k miles ie barely run in for around half the new price .
  • Door - easy job?? 26 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Hiya... As described in two very long and old threads ('think I've seen the last of my car' 1 and 2), I've had my polo back for about 6 weeks now. Initially (3rd time I rejected it) the driver's door hadn't been refitted properly so it wouldn't always open from the inside and was chipping away paint in the bottom corner of the frame.
  • 14,000 miles. Diesel BMW Oil Change ??? 24 Dec 2003 (Forum)
I have recently bought a 15 month old BMW 330D. (36,000 motorway miles) I have noted that according to the service book the car has had oil changes every 14,000 miles... Being of the old school with regards to changing engine oil I immediately contacted several BMW main dealers..They all assured me it was ok to leave the servicing so long as they use \"special longlife Castrol SLX oil\"..
  • Bullying Fiat into a fix 24 Apr 2003 (Forum)
So I insist that this man from Fiat sees the car and book an appointment for when he next visits. Go home and check small print of warranty - which does indeed say body panels - what a cop out! Phone trading standards for advice - they say that my contract is with the dealer and they agree that a 2 year old car should not be showing such signs of corrosion.
  • Bang! 24 Mar 2003 (Forum)
So presumably an insurance claim won't cost me the NCD on my policy. Question - if rear-hinged doors were outlawed years ago, why are car makers still allowed to fit rear hinged bonnets? If my mother's old car had been a Renault, this would never have happened. Richard Hall http://bangernomics.tripod.com
  • My mum's insurers have written her car off without her agreeing to do so - what can we do? 28 Aug 2018 (Ask HJ)
My 73-year-old mother's car was hit by an SUV that went through a red light. The driver admitted fault and said she was not concentrating (messing with...
  • Cash allowance + vehicle age policy = confusion 7 Jul 2019 (Forum)
Dear HJ friends, I'd welcome some help from the community in navigating my first vehicle purchase, (I've owned a few cars, but feel this is my first serious consideration on car choice, read on to find out why...) I've just changed employment with a promotion, and I get a cash car allowance with my role - but they have a policy that stipulates that in order to receive it, my car must be under 6 years old.
  • A Polo count-down 19 Dec 2009 (Ask HJ)
I am a 48-year-old single mother of 4 and have just qualified as a nurse. I have got a job as a community staff nurse, which involves a lot of travelling....

  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 2000/xreg 2.0 Ghia fuel pump/fuse 20 Feb 2011 (Forum)
So I sorted that out and the next day bought a new battery, as the old one was 7 years old, hoping this would cure it. The car has been used all week with no problems and I thought it was fixed. But today after driving around making lots of stops and starts, the car started and stalled again just as before, the 15 amp fuse had blown again.
  • SAAB 9-3 (2007 - ) - Saabs gone downhill, or rose tints at work? 1 May 2008 (Forum)
What a disappointment! The interior is stylish, but the finish feels nothing like special enough for a £28k car. The driving position is strange with the steering wheel always feeling too close, whatever you do with the seat and wheel. Many of the minor controls feel cheap (including the door mirror control that looks just like the one in my old Cavalier), and the engine idles roughly with vibes transmitted into the car.
  • A dilemma 21 Jan 2004 (Forum)
I say to my wife, quick, let?s get out of here before she hits us - but I can't go forward because of the car parked in front of me. And the old dear is getting closer and closer behind! I hop out of the car to see if I can prevent her getting any closer....but too late. I'm half way around my car and the wife shrieks that the o.d. has hit us.
