  • Trying to trace an old car.Any ideas how 9 Dec 2004 (Forum)
When I was a kid I used to see a Lister Jaguar XJ-S registration number A502 OFO on my way to college in Hereford. Has anyone any idea on how I can legally trace it? I have tried the club and club website without luck. My interest in the car was rekindled when I bought an old car magazine at a car boot sale in the summer and found it was a roadtest vehicle in the eighties.
  • There should be a law against it! 7 Nov 2004 (Forum)
It was a brillant evenings entertainment. The bangers consisted of Mk2 Granadas, Jags, Volvo 240/760's and a Rover P4. I've always had a soft spot for the P4 and it was a sad end for this one - although the old girl lasted longer than most in the Destruction Derby. There should be a law against it!

  • The BackRoom Poll makes a return. 5 Aug 2004 (Forum)
The more observant of you may have noticed an extra forum has appeared. Following the success? of Big Brother\'s garage quiz, I have (painstakingly) brought the BackRoom Poll out of retirement. For the 1st week I have used an old question that Martyn posed as I want to test things to see if there are any bugs before starting other questions - one of which will be the Alfa v TVR vote.
  • Tyre choice replace Goodyear NCT5 ? 29 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Need to replace the NCT5's on my Beetle soon, but looking for a better tyre in their place. Although good wear (got 60k out of the whole set, with a front/rear rotation a while back), the main problems with the Goodyears are excessive road noise (a problem I remember from Michelin Energy tyres, too).
  • 306 cabriolet tyre choice 19 Jul 2004 (Forum)
At the moment the two front tyres are at the indicator limit, the two rears have about 4mm on them. The spare is brand new. They are all Pirelli P6000's. I've read lots of negative comments on the Pirelli's about how difficult they are to balance and the noise they generate. I've thought about Goodyear Eagle NCT5 ZR's or Michelin Pilot Exhalto's. So i'm a bit confused.
  • amazing sighting 10 Jul 2004 (Forum)

  • Peugeot 106 speedo no go 5 Jul 2004 (Forum)
*groan* Also has a whining noise from the front (no, not me) which I think is a wheel bearing type symptom rather than gearbox... Mrs S is 8 months pregnant so luckily isn't wanting/needing to drive herself round too much at the moment!!!!!!! Cheers
  • New Car Air-con efficiency 12 Jun 2004 (Forum)
At its coldest, on recirculate, although significantly colder than outside, it just doesn\'t seem cold enough. In other cars I have driven, it\'s practicaly unbearable on the coldest setting. How cold should the air be entering the cabin?
  • Move of The Week 31 May 2004 (Forum)
Don't know what driving manual this was from, but I bet it's interesting reading... Coming home from work last night, car tearing up bus lane(during operational hours) on n/s. Rapidly catching some other moron half in bus lane, he decides not to bother slowing down, but with 2 wheels & half the car on the pavement, pulls off a great undertaking manouvre & speeds on! 10/10 for style, execution & sheer brass...

  • I have a birds nest (not my hair do) 18 May 2004 (Forum)
I actually have a birds nest in my car, in between the bumper and the radiator. It\'s well hidden and I can\'t get to it without jacking up the car and removing the bottom (renault megane sport tourer). I noticed it because I see the same bird come out of nowhere every time I start the car.
  • Citroen Xsara exhaust 17 May 2004 (Forum)
Hi All, My Wife\'s Citroen Xsara 1.4 forte (Jan 2000) exhaust has just started to blow. I was just going to get the garage to look at it and change the damaged part eg back box etc but my Father in Law says you might as well change the whole system as soon as you change one part the other parts will start to go.
  • Need help diagnosing problem. Fiesta. 3 May 2004 (Forum)
Ok the car is a ford fiesta 1.8LX diesel 1993 L reg. It\'s done about 150k miles and is in ok condition. Well its making thumping noises from the engine especially when i give it a bit of throttle, this is when idling. Also the coolant is disappearing fast and fairly thick white smoke from the exhuast.
  • Cheap diesel car for less than £1000 23 Jan 2004 (Forum)
I would prefer something easy to work on as I\'ll be changing the oil amongst other stuff myself. My mk3 1.3 fiesta is a delight to work on \'cos there\'s stacks of space under the bonnet. Just really wanted some opinions from a few DIYers. Are the fiesta diesels chain driven by the way ? The options are:- Fiesta Mk3/4 Peugeot 306 any others worth considering ?
  • Getting the best out of your car 12 Jan 2004 (Forum)
My wheels are now around 3 years old. I drive it as if it\'s an extension of my own self. Now, I\'m sensitive about my own health (I have to be, at my age). So what this means is, my car gets driven \'sympathetically\', looked after, pampered, etc. My car rewards me with 100% reliability, and low costs.
  • Mondeo Boot Leak 30 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Hi, I have noticed for the first time today I apparantly have water leaking into the boot of my car, almost all of the boot underlay is s**den. I have checked the rubber seals around the hatch and they seem ok, but the metal underneath the seals on each side of the hatch was also wet. Fingers crossed it may be a one off incident after a recent big downpour, but knowing my luck it is more complex than that.

The water pump on my daughter,s 1.2 Nova 'banger' has just gone.I have managed to avoid playing with cars in recent times as I buy new ones. But I do have reasonable experience of working on most aspects of car repair. Can any BR's advise me of any pitfalls I should know about before embarking on changing the pump?
  • Tales From Under The Hood 25 Aug 2003 (Forum)
What,s the most catastrophic engine failure anyone's had the misfortune to suffer whilst driving? What does it sound like when the cam belt throws the towel in & valves & pistons form an intimate relationship?
