Citroen Xsara exhaust - jlo
Hi All,

My Wife\'s Citroen Xsara 1.4 forte (Jan 2000) exhaust has just started to blow.

I was just going to get the garage to look at it and change the damaged part eg back box etc but my Father in Law says you might as well change the whole system as soon as you change one part the other parts will start to go. Is this true!

I thought just changing the damaged part would be sufficent.

Any one have any thoughts on this.

Cheers

It depends how good (or bad) the rest of the system is.

I suppose that the labour fitting the whole exhaust should be less than fitting individual parts and there is only one connection to the manifold/cat to remove, then the rest can be chopped up violently.

You may be able to negotiate a discount on a complete system too.

Get prices for the individual sections and for the whole exhaust. I\'d also look at the prices for the components from an independant like GSF or Eurocarparts.

Depends too how long you intend to keep the car. If you\'re holding onto it for the long haul, it\'s probably best to do the whole system (from cat back) If you just want to get through an MOT or intend changing soon a part repair could be OK.

My sister\'s 1995 Xantia exhaust had to be replaced a couple of weeks ago. It was the original one! Last April (2003) the back box looked pretty ropey - the outer layer of metal had fractured and was hanging off. I \'wound\' it off like a sardine tin to tidy it up for the MOT (it wasn\'t actually burst) It passed with flying colours. At the time, I advised sister that its days were numbered. This April, she took it back to me to check before MOT and this time there were a few pinholes on the back box and precedimg pipe.Because we also had to put on a couple of drop arms and a steering rack boot, we decided to try a bandage on the exhaust. Incredibly, it passed again and soldiered on until early May.

I\'ve always found Cit exhausts pretty good.
