  • Top Gear Thread Volume 30. 1 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Coastguards have slammed an audacious bid by Top Gear stars Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May to DRIVE across the Channel. The daredevil trio all attempted to make the crossing across the world?s busiest shipping lane in three specially-adapted cars for the hit BBC TV show. And, remarkably, one of the vehicles actually reached the French coast. http://tinyurl.com/ynwmtf (Shortened link to an article on www.kentnews.co.uk) http://tinyurl.com/3x7m4m (Shortened link to The Daily Mail) (better pictures)
  • Claim 20p a mile - for using your bicycle 30 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Just been looking up some VAT matters for a friend and came across this website: http://www.onestop-bookkeeping.co.uk/business_info.php#5 According to its contents with regard to using vehicles for business use, it also states: "..and for those of you who are environmentally friendlier, you can also claim 20p/mile for business journeys made on your bicycle." New one on me. Anyone else aware of it? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - What\'s for you won\'t pass you by
  • Plain clothes police car on M6! 20 Jul 2007 (Forum)
I wonder if the boy racer has seen the Impreza and tried to race him? Nasty shock if he did! Also (to my amusement) saw 2 nice new BMWs s on the hard shoulder, a silver one having just shunted a black one. No one else involved.
  • Testing and Marking of E4 Tyres 17 Jul 2007 (Forum)
My tyre supplier claims that everything they sell is appropriately tested. Speed rating e.g. H, V, mud and snow capability ?M & S?, tread wear index, load index etc.. seems a lot to test/check - presumably on all sizes. With so many far eastern brands, I cannot believe that independent verification is being carried out on them all.

  • If you were on southbound M5 this mornin 3 May 2007 (Forum)
So was I- at about 1100, around the A38 /S West Birmingham junction. The gantry signs were advising reduced speed, at one point down to 40, due to an accident between J6/7. I slowed- not, I admit to 40, but to about 60- and for more than 5 minutes was overtaken by dozens of vehicles (including a car delivery pickup pulling a trailer in lane3)-all travelling at well above my speed.

Playing with a non starting car today (1970's with points and condenser etc) and couldn't get a spark. No lead was attached to plus ve side of coil, but 2 suspected ones were loose and would reach so looked likely. 1 was not live at all so ignored. 1 was live with ignition on so looked likely, but......
  • Bird poo 19 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Well, cleaned the car this morning, and it?s clearly burnt the lacquer. I've had my A3 3 weeks, and this happens... I mean why oh why can't manufacturers find a way of toughening up the paint! I cleaned it off in less than a day, I consider myself a perfectionist with paintwork, and still it killed the lacquer.

  • 607 ignition coils 28 Jan 2007 (Forum)
On four occaisions over the last two years it has started to misfire but has been cured when a new coil(s) has been fitted. He doesn't know whether the originals were a bad batch and over this time all 6 have been gradually replaced, or whether it is a general problem. Has anybody had similar experiences with this.
  • 53 mondeo heater 10 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Gents I have a 53 zetec s 130tdci mondeo and the heater seems to be playing up. In "normal mode the heat used to come out at the feet, face and screen . It now only comes out at the screen. If you select an option on the heater control eg feet then it will blow all the heat at the feet, the same for face and screen.
  • Reversing hazards on Focus /Mondeo 15 Dec 2006 (Forum)
One rear wheel was much closer to the front of the wheel arch than the other. The tiebar was in effect a flattened S shape instead of being straight. So beware reverse with care!

  • W. Midlands Alloy Wheel Refurb? 30 Oct 2006 (Forum)
My gf managed to kerb my front n/s alloy over the weekend. She's stripped off the protective bumper on the tyre, and gone thru the lacquer, putting a 10 cm long graze on the alloy. Does anyone have a recommendation for someone in the W Mids who could sort this out for me?
  • Goodyear 26 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Good morning all, what a lovely day to talk about tyres. Have been trying to order some Eagle F1's GSD2 in recent times and climbing everest would be easier. Virtually every fitter I called for a quote over the past few days tells me most varieties of Goodyear are on back order and have been for some months.
  • Mini depreciation 'shock' 26 Sep 2006 (Forum)
Just under twelve months ago a colleague bought a Cooper S with leather and sat-nav for £18000 (used). He got it on the basis of its 'rock solid' residuals. A change of circumstances has led to him havig to change it. He got £11000 from the dealer. He was absolutely shocked and feels like he's been sold a pup by the motoring press.
  • Aircon fuel consumption increases 28 Aug 2006 (Forum)
The link below *should* take you through AutoBild´s table of fuel consumption increases for 4 cars with their aircon on - a Panda, Zafira, C-class and a Golf. The bit on the left shows the different ambient temps tested: 20, 28 and 33 degrees. The middle bit gives a percentage fuel consumption increase at 50 km/h.
  • Astra Van rack failure 27 Jul 2006 (Forum)

  • too much oil...consequences of driving 2 Jun 2006 (Forum)
My friend got given a vectra (W reg) by his brother; he accidentally put in too much oil (the dip stick goes up past the max by about the same amount as the distance between the max and the min). Now it takes a few turn s to start and there was a puff of black smoke.. He hasnt got any inspection ramps or anywhere to safely drain away the oil, is it safe to drive the car about 2 miles to the garage to have the oil changed, or will it cause damage..?
