  • Filth beyond belief - descending gaga to cylinders 16 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Or rather `the facilitator of filth` I`ve just blanked off the EGR on the 1.9D (as in tech) But woa.. what wet oily filth has been descending.. I`m amazed engines keep running... Now add DPF.. Engine designer thinking... "Well. we`ve got filth descending from the EGR on the intake stroke - lets squirt neat derv into the bores on the exhaust stroke" Engine oil really must be amazing stuff these days, don`t you think?
  • Audi A4 (1995 - 2000) - 96 1.8 Sticking ignition switch 4 Aug 2009 (Forum)
After starting the engine, I have to manually turn the key back to the run position. Sometimes I forget and this is burning out the starter motor drive every 6 months or so. The AA man tells me the A4 is renowned for sticking ignition switch. Does anyone have experience of replacing one or having it replaced?
  • Nissan Micra (1992 - 2003) - 97 1.0 humming fuel pump! 30 Jul 2009 (Forum)
I have checked and changed the pump relay and the fuel filter. Is this a fuel pump on its last legs and causing the cutting out? Also why is the pump running in the accesory position? Has me stumped so any advice most appreciated.
  • Vauxhall Cavalier (1988 - 1995) - 94 2.0 Odd starting problem 14 Jul 2009 (Forum)
However...if you pour a bit of fuel into the intake to get it started, suddenly the ECU wakes up and starts fuelling keeping it running. Stop and restart it's absolutely fine. If left for more than a few mins though, back to the original problem. So...any ideas? James.

  • Fuel warning light - how much left? 16 Jun 2009 (Forum)
According to some rudimentary calculations done by yours truly, I suspect there to be a bit more in reserve than that. Also, if there are any tales relating to fuel and running out of it, please post!
  • A plastic camshaft - whatever next? 16 Jun 2009 (Forum)
It only produces about 3bhp - the large capacity for the output is used to reduce noise. Presumably, the engine is running at lowish revs with a low compression ratio and the camshaft is fairly short as it only has one cylinder to look after. I can't imagine a plastic camshaft would work in a more stressed/highly tuned application such as a motorcycle - can it?
  • Peugeot 205 (1983 - 1997) - 87 1.9 Over fueling 12 Jun 2009 (Forum)
hi i was wondering if somebody can help me out ive developed a rather large over fueling problem after lots or replacement parts and loads of trial and error on things ive noticed its starts no problem at all if i disconnect the pump but when its running and as soon as i connect it it just stalls i have a very good spark ive replaced all the sparky bits, the fuel rail, pressure regulator, air flow meter and filter and still no luck, any ideas any one??
  • Mondeo TDCi Starting Problems 1 Jun 2009 (Forum)
The main agent say they can find nothing wrong but, patently, there is. It makes no difference if the engine has been used for a short /long run nor if the engine is warm /cold. Can any of you clever people suggest a cause and a solution? (The car otherwise is very impressive and at 50+ mpg average over the last 7000 miles I have no other complaints.)
  • Vauxhall Corsa B (1993 - 2000) - 99 1.7 Possible diesel leak 29 May 2009 (Forum)
I noticed this morning that my car had a small puddle underneath at the rear on the drivers side. The car was parked facing up a hill, so it had run slightly. The car has been moved about a bit since then, and each time, there's been a few drops of diesel underneath, but not much. I have seen one older post suggesting that filling the car up fully with fuel can cause this to happen a little and I did fill the tank up to maximum yesterday - is this a likely cause?
  • I Have a Question - Volume 291 [Read Only] 21 May 2009 (Forum)
Although my heating is off, when I run the hot taps the radiators start to heat up. This also happened a couple of years ago but I was on the British Gas Boiler service at the time and they did what they did to fix it. My house had a fire and we were out for a year, part of the work included an inspection of the boiler to see if it was damaged in any way and it was deemed to be fine.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 04 1.8 SCI Cooling fan? when AC turned on 20 May 2009 (Forum)
When I turn the A/C on, a fan starts running under the bonnet. I've only had the car two weeks and have noticed this for the first time today after having the timing chain replaced. On my Focus mkii, turning the a/c barely makes any difference to the engine noise but the Mondeo sounds as if the cooling fan is on.
  • Peugeot 406 (1996 - 1998) - 98 2.0 Misfire/stalling 20 May 2009 (Forum)
My Pug 1998 GLX 2.0i has started to misfire or seeming to stall when running. The engine appears to stall and then fires up again immediately and gives a real thump in your back when this occurs. It is random event and can be once a day or a number of times on one journey and then the symptoms disappear.
  • Rover 25 (1999 - 2005) - 01 1.4 ticking noise since oil change 17 May 2009 (Forum)
hi all,can someone help. ive got a rover 25 and its got a ticking noise, since i got a oil change there has been a constant ticking noise coming from the engine. what ive noticed is that the ticking noise is mainly noticable when in low gears,as i get to the high gears it basically fades. the car runs perfect with no loss of power and is used daily. could it have a tappet stuck? if someone knows what it is,then would it damage the car if i do a long journey. thanks for looking and all help appreciated.
  • Cost of motoring going down? 8 May 2009 (Forum)
Story in today's Independent says drivers often feel that they have been unfairly targeted by the Treasury, with the duty on petrol having increased dramatically since 1997. But, says the newspaper, the rises in the costs of running a car have been more than offset by the falling cost of buying and maintaining a car in real terms. For example, a Ford Fiesta with a 1.25-litre engine cost £9,165 when Labour came to power. Consumers can buy a similar model 12 years later for £9,995, "making it much cheaper once inflation is factored in.
  • Worn out engine 3 May 2009 (Forum)
Following on from my hatred of carbs i also realised i hate asthmatic worn out engines Worst one i remember running was a ford 1600ohv in my old escort van that was so worn out it had a lump of wood hammered into the rocker cover box to keep the fumes from entering the cab, this worked for 2 miles until i thought i had been shot ,but it was the lump of wood that had come out and hit the bonnet.
  • Ford Escort (1993 - 2000) - 93 1.8 Uneven tickover and smoke when hot 28 Apr 2009 (Forum)
My son has a P100 pick up with a 1.8 diesel engine (I've listed it as an escort as there's no P100 listing) but its the same engine, in fact it came from an escort (not an easy conversion) It starts and drives well, but on tickover when hot starts running unevenly and smoking unburnt fuel although its perfectly OK given a few revs. My impression is that the compression is low on one cylinder, as it only happens when its hot I would suspect valve clearances but have read that these engines rarely need adjustment.
  • Ford Escort (1993 - 2000) - 97 1.8TDi heater fan motor resistor location 24 Apr 2009 (Forum)
Hi all, first posting, please be gentle :-) I believe the heater blower motor resistor has gone on my Escort (Estate) as it only runs in position 3 (recycle or fresh air positions). I'd REALLY like to know how to access / remove the resistor. I'm not in the UK so can't get a Haynes manual. Can I get to it through the engine compartment via a bulkhead panel or have I got to crawl under the dash ?
  • Ford KA, KA2, KA3 (1996 - 2008) - Ford Ka as a cheap runaround 24 Apr 2009 (Forum)
I posted a while back regarding the possible need for a small runaround and was looking at a Mk1 Focus hatchback or Fiesta. Having reconsidered budgets regarding purchase price and running costs I was thinking of the Ka. I'd never previously considered a Ka but a friend has just bought an S Reg. I was amazed at just how simple and basic it looked. It was strangely refreshing to see bare metal and basic controls.
