  • Mazda 6 - Mazda 6 / Ford Mondeo Diesel Engines 8 Apr 2010 (Forum)
If this is correct I'm assuming the Mazda 2.0 MZR-CD RF diesel engine is the same PSA designed unit as the Ford 2.0 Duratorq TDCi diesel engine (As Ford seem to be a majority owner of Mazda) - is my assumption correct, are they totally different or are there subtle differences between the two? The answer(s) may spawn several more questions. Thanks in advance, Chris

  • Council turned down claim for broken spring. 18 Dec 2009 (Forum)
Driving over a "defect" in a local road I broke the o/s front roadspring on my Smart Roadster-Coupe. I made a claim which the council have now declined to pay. The reason for their refusal is that they inspected the road within a month before the incident and their inspection concluded that the "defect" that broke my spring was not sufficient to cause damage to vehicles.

  • Goodwood Revival - Classic Mini Race 23 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Hello all Was at the Goodwood Revival this Sunday, had the great pleasure of watching the 50th anniversary of the Mini celebrated in race form as twenty-somthing mid-sixties Cooper 'S's thrashed it round the track. I am currently locked in a debate about how fast these cars can actually go. All were using the 1293cc engine, my dad swears that they were reaching 120mph down the Lavant Straight.
  • Ford Mondeo IV (2007 - ) - Dyno plot for 2.0 140bhp TDCI 24 Aug 2009 (Forum)
On the Superchips website you can see a dyno plot before and after Bluefin fitting, for the 2.0 140bhp TDCi motor. It's listed under S-Max 2.0TDCi. Don't know how accurate their dyno is, but the "before" figures are: 154bhp at 3500rpm (and 150bhp+ to over 4000rpm) 366Nm (about 260lb-ft) at 2390rpm (with more than 350Nm available from 2100 to 2900rpm).
  • Volkswagen Golf V (2004 - 2008) - Best diesel engine 1.9 or 2.0 ? 13 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Folks, my girlfriend is looking to get a new car, well new to her. Ideally a diesel from 2004 on. I was told by a friend to stay away from 2.0 ones and that 1.9's are better. I cant remember his reasoning but there was some common fault with them. I was just wondering if there was any substance to this statement and if there is anything that should be looked out for when viewing cars?

  • GM Crash Tests in 1968 - Scary! 19 May 2009 (Forum)
tinyurl.com/p4hzqe Horrifying standards in car design in the 60's. I am sure we have come a long way since then. I have never seen a whole bench seat with passengers (dummies, of course) come out of the drivers door before. Link made non-clickable because the link has content on the right hand side that some may find inappropriate and also may get some members into trouble if viewed from work computers.

PricewaterhouseCoopers said it is working on strategies to "salvage value from the business, however the main trading business and the company?s 15,000 vehicle fleet is likely to be wound down over the next five weeks". I guess the auctions are going to be busy

  • Most unusual car modification 28 Feb 2009 (Forum)
What`s the most unusual car modification you have seen, or done yourself - perhaps in youth ;-) I remember seeing those unpainted alloy rear `wings` bolted onto the rear of cars a few years back, looking about as integrated as a computer rack bolted on.
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 2002 1.8 tdci loosing power 18 Feb 2009 (Forum)
It is accompanied by lots of smoke and if I try and accelerate a twittering noise similar to the waste gates you hear on rally cars (at least that?s what I think it is). This lasts for a 10-15 seconds and then disappears. Any ideas?
  • Volga - Hot Volgas 19 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Reported in newspaper here, and just wondering if anyone has actually seen one, that a Russian company is taking Porche Cayenne drivetrains and fitting elderly Kruschev - era Volga bodies to them. Comes out about the size of a Benz S - class after necessary modifications. The Volgarised Cayenne is reputed to be good for 6.7 sec to 100 km/hr, and top speed of 250 km/hr. As it is not April 1st, and knowing that Russia imports lots of German vehicles both new and used, this could be a useful wolf in sheep's clothing.

  • Vauxhall Astra F (1991 - 1998) - 1995 1.6 Clonky front suspension 26 Dec 2008 (Forum)
I have just bought a cheap and cheerful Astra F which drives superbly apart from clocks from the o/s front end. I have jacked up the car and nothing is loose and I suspect the fault is with the suspension bushes. Are these similar to the escort orion lower suspension arm where you just replace the whole item and are these known to be troublesome on the cars?
  • Paraffin burning `tramp steamer`detected on M1 21 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Smelt burning paraffin on the M1 last week - near Sheffield and came up behind a small flat-bed (1 car) transporter. Only a few years old too. A surprise really, what`s the benefit? Isn`t paraffin and a splosh of engine oil just about as expensive as Derv? The last time I smelt paraffin was behind a Landrover during the last fuel strike. I thought cooking oil had taken over as the engine wrecker
  • Reliable Tools 6 Nov 2008 (Forum)
I'm thinking of investing in some new tools - sockets, spanners, ratchets etc etc We all know "you gets whats you pays for", so ideally I'd love to buy a set of Snap-on tools, but hey this is the real world and I can't afford them! My question is. . . can anyone recommend a brand(s) of decent, reliable and well priced tools? What tools do you use? Cheap, car boot stuff, or something a bit more expensive? Be good to hear everyones opinions. Maceman.
