Scenario : Lovely sunny day, decide to go for a drive in the country and hot diggedy dog! no traffic! What's playing on your Radio/CD/Tape/MD/MP3/DAB/LP/Wax disc? Me? "18" by Moby, rather too loud or some shoe staring music from the early 90s Lee.
  • Toyota Mastersurf. Any good ???? 26 Jun 2002 (Forum)
Does anyone have any first hand experience of one of these ? 1994 'L', low mileage. It all sounds really good. 2.4 turbo diesel, 4 wheel drive (switchable), air con, swivel seats, seats 8, comes with a warranty etc... Or are there any known troublespots with these. Any advice would be most grateful.
  • Cavalier Auto - Vibration 25 Jun 2002 (Forum)
There is a noticeable amount of vibration when the car is idling - the effect is more obvious when the autobox is in drive. It has over 100k on the clock. When the RPM is above 1000 the car is extremely smooth and there are no other problems. Is this normal for an older auto, or if not, any ideas what could dampen it down a bit?
  • L plates forever on 125cc bike??? 16 Jun 2002 (Forum)
I have had a car licence since 1967 which says it's a provisional up to 125 cc. If I use it with L plates, (and no passenger)can I drive it forever, or has the law changed?

  • In Car TV / Video 18 Apr 2002 (Forum)
My local Barber has just demonstrated his in Car TV/Video system to me, it slots into the dashboard in place of the usual radio, it is a fantastic system no doubt but. He says he has it on all the time while he is driving ........... Surely it is illegal to watch a tv in a moving car ? And if so why is such a device on sale ? Marcus ( Luddite )
  • In the UK next month... 2 Apr 2002 (Forum)
    1) Must be available from one of the big rental companies 2) Have some respect - not a Fiat Uno or something (I am willing to accept bribes from car manufacturer's who would prefer I did not drive one of their vehicles).
  • Seat Leon 1.9Tdi SE 4 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Im thinking of getting one of these diesels Leons and have checked HJ's test drive reports for info. Has anyone who has a new one any thoughts on the car, good or bad, they would like to share? Any info on the diesel, including the chipped 140 bhp from Europe would be appreciated.

  • Brake Fluid change 15 Nov 2001 (Forum)
I have a Focus tdi Zetec, with ABS, just coming up to 2yrs old & 30k miles. I drive quite a lot on urban roads, but am fairly light on the brakes - still comfortably on my 1st set of pads. When do you experts recommend that I renew my brake fluid ? Thanks in advance :-)
  • 40 years on.. 15 Oct 2001 (Forum)
Does anyone want to share reminiscences about student transport? I was thinking about Swansea in the early 60's, we were driving around in a Jaguar SS 100,(£80) Fiat Topolino, Austin Big 12 Convertible,(£45) etc, all bought for a song and taken for granted at the time..talk about 'wasted on the young'! • Citroen Synergie 18 Feb 2001 (Forum)
I have a '96 Synergie 1.9 diesel which the whole family loves as long as they don't have to drive. We can live with the handling, but it could do with much more power (why didn't citroen fit the 12-valve turbo-diesel from the XM?). We will be keeping it for a while yet. Anyone any ideas about tuning?
  • BMW 1 Series - vibration suspension tired 30 Oct 2019 (Forum)
On holiday, I  have rented small VW Golf, Micra, Skoda, Corsa etc....  all were reasonable, but none I wanted to own.  Getting a test drive, can be a pain, as they think you are a time waster, but I want the right car. I don't want to buy something which I will regret or have remorse. I tend to keep cars for a long time.... and do low-mileage, but I want a car for city driving, but I also want a grand tour of the UK (my wish list!).
  • Peugeot 206 - Loss of power and EML with new air filter 9 Jul 2018 (Forum)
I've got a weird problem with my car, its a 1.4 HDi, same engine as the Ford 1.4 TDCi. I changed the air filter on it and upon driving it the EML came on and the further you push the pedal down the more the engine keeps refusing to rev whilst driving. It acts like it's either in limp mode or it's not getting any fuel if you try and accelerate quickly.
  • Vauxhall Zafira A - Loss of instruments, charging suspect 1 Jun 2018 (Forum)
2004 Petrol 2.2l Design 16valve 1. Flat battery after driving couple of weeks back.Later when testing: Suspect alternator as with all lights, aircon, radio, fan, voltage at battery reduced to about 12.7V on 2000 revs. Didn't try driving, but then dove to work etc 14miles (spare battery in car in case) and everthing fine, charging 13.5 volts with everthing on.
  • How much difference does a roof rack make to MPG? 20 Feb 2018 (Forum)
I realise, given my usage, this is probably not too bad, but given my connect (known as being less efficient than most small vans) averaged 39-40MPG , i was a little dissapointed not to be getting more and wondered just how much difference a roof rack might make?. By far the biggest majority of my main road driving is on single carriageway A and B roads, where i tend to drive between 50MPH (which is what i am legally supposed to be doing) and 60MPH, but usually closer to 50 these days as the caddy seems happier there (it is a 2.0 sdi, so 70BHP and fairly low gearing).
  • Accident - Dilemma? 18 Dec 2017 (Forum)
Both our cars are over 13 years, so I doubt worth repairing his or claiming on insurance, but I don't know if I should just offer some cash as compensation (but he was parked in th wrong place.... so not entirely my fault!). The dent was about 2" in, but I was driving slowly, could this happen when driving slow parking speed in reverse gear? Should I  knock on the door of my neighbhoor? (I am an honest person).
  • Honest John’s Motoring Agony Column 09-09-2017 Part II 15 Sep 2017 (Forum)
Landcruiser with 3 litre is same engine, I changed my own with a Gates full kit including new tensioner @ around £80, takes the aforesaid 1 hour first time, next time i reckon 40 minutes tops. All cambelt drives should be designed like this. I'd also dispute the auto box not being good, please try one for yourself, preferably in a 3 litre Hilux HL3 or Invincible spec.
