But as always when the public arrive in numbers there were variations in the bidding. Two 93K Renault 19 1.4s came up in different sections in similar condition, one 83k miles, the other 90k.

  The auction at the Warwickshire Event Centre saw 115 classics sold - a 65% sales rate with total sales exceeding £1.53 million. There was also plenty of demand for traditional classics. A restored 1954 Citroen 2CV was sold to a bidder in Australia at a winning bid of £10,340. While an original UK, right-hand drive 1967 Mercedes-Benz 230SL 'Pagoda' with a five-speed manual gearbox sold to a phone bidder for £50,050.

  The needle-match at the front of the two Categories proved to be as competitive as ever, with the Time Trial of the day seeing the Citroen DS seeking revenge for yesterday’s drive by Gerry Crown in the Leyland P76, snatching back 20 seconds out of Gerry’s lead which is now less than two minutes. The two Russians in the Moskvitch are an impressive 10th, but they have Mercedes-Benzes, Jaguars, Mustangs, Porsches behind them… In the Vintageants, second placed Bruce and Ben Washington poured on the coal to stoke up enough grunt to stay second and hard on the heels of the leading Chevrolet of Phil Garratt, but third placed Bill Cleyndert and Mark van Hees in the Ford Model A raceabout set the best performance on the Time Trial, covering the ground in 17 minutes 08 seconds, no less than 19 seconds quicker than the Chevy.

  As it's already modified, what harm would a suitably hotted-up engine do? We love the early left-hand drive interior, which retains the Citroen SM dashboard almost completely unmodified, although its bright red retrim is certainly attention grabbing. But it is a well-recorded car, with a fully documented history, and that counts for a great deal in today's market, even if the styling's a little Marmite (love it or hate it).

  A 73k mile 2001Y 1.8iLX sold for just £4,850 and a 40k mile but mere ten month old 03 reg TDCI 130 LX sold for a mere £7,400. In contrast, Citroen seemed to be attempting to set some high residual prices for its cars. 14 month old 52 reg Saxo 1.4LXs with 7k to 14k miles were bid to between £5,650 and £6,050. 52 reg Picasso 1.6SXs were £7,600 to £7,800.
