  • Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe - Service & MOT costs 19 Jan 2017 (Forum)
Hello, I have two questions: 1. I have been quoted £660 for a MB dealer "main" service to include brake fluid change and oil, air and fuel filters change. (diesel 2.0 litre) Their MOT price is £35. One advantage is that you get Merc roadside recovery with the service for one year. Local Merc specialist (ex merc trained owners) is £260 inclusive.
  • Audi A4 Avant - Who's at fault 25 Nov 2016 (Forum)
Someone pulled into middle lane from a concealed side road into middle lane(ass closest lane to their entrance had parked cars along it) I was doing 30, saw the person pulling into my lane and braked to avoid collision, plus swerved to avoid the crash, but couldn't swerve left as there was a car to my right, instead serving right and we collided. I hit my passenger front side at 45degree angle into her rear.

Hi, I recently had my car serviced and defects were found, the most severe are below: Front brakes and pads - Red - legal to take away from garage but require replacing Small engine leaks This has prompted me to get another vehicle and part ex mine. I have been offered 950 for my 10 plate car.
  • A look back in time 7 Mar 2016 (Forum)
A guide to used cars lists top speed, mpg, replacement cost of engines, (typically £50 to 70 for UK cars, but £540 for Mercedes!), gearboxes, tyres, brake parts etc. I used to buy the magazine regularly in those days, running old cars it was often helpful.   Present day equivalent I suppose is "Practical Classics" and the valuable resource of this forum's technical section.
  • Jaguar S-Type - ABS and handbrake fault lights 28 Oct 2015 (Forum)
Hi All, I have followed the site but now joined tobe able to ask the advice of the Forum. I am looking at a nice Jaguar S type. On the test drive the ABS and Brake light warning came up, though there seemed no problem with the handbrake operation, and I did not put the ABS to the test. Has anyone any advice as to the cause and possible costs of putting these right?
  • hyundai i30 1.4se 2009 - i30 is dead? 23 Apr 2015 (Forum)
I30 1.4 se 5dr petrol Feb 2009 58000 miles As I came to a stop at a roundabout my car cut out. I restarted and continued and when I braked and came to a stop at the next junction the cut out again. No noises. Car had ran smoothly. No judder or engine noise or anything to suggest a problem. However, I couldn't restart and it's now at a garage.
  • Morgan - Nostalgia, or not ! 3 Nov 2014 (Forum)
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/news/11203463/Three-wheel-car-makes-an-unlikely-comeback-in-Britain.html During the 1950s one I my work-mates refurbished a Morgan three wheeler and modernised it; one of the things was converting the brakes to hydraulic and increasing the drum size etc.  He spent about two years working on it and returned it to showroom condition.  On the first run he made in the car he planned to fill the tank with fuel at a garage on the main road so he stopped on the crown and waited for an opportuinty to turn in.
  • VW Golf 1999 Mk4 GT TDI 1.9 110 - '99 Golf Mk4 stalls randomly 3 Aug 2014 (Forum)
Occasionally when cruising steadily it feels like it's missing a little, and it feels like it's hesitating every second or two. The glow-plug light usually comes on after it has stalled. The brake lights are all good (which is what the glow-plug light usually means). It never stalls when accelerating, doesn't smoke, and I get an indicated 60mpg+.
  • Audi A6 2.7Tdi estate - Audi A6 complete engine failure 28 Jul 2014 (Forum)
Driving along - quite happily - under 40mph and suddenly a central warning message came on in the dashboard cluster stating "indicative light failure" - it flashed up and then shut down the entire engine, engaged the brakes and I came to a complete stop.  I turned off the ignition - thankful no-one was behind me - and then on stage 1 the radio came back on - so I had power - but nothing else.  I waited for 5 minutes wondering what to do - and then tried again (as you do!)
  • Volkswagen - Dsg gearboxes 2 Aug 2013 (Forum)
One 'problem' I'm reading everywhere is the delay when pulling away, stop/starting. I'm not putting dsg owners down but isn't this made clear by VW? It's to do with the brake lights being linked to the dsg in some way for selecting gears? Also, is there some sense in reverse and second gear being on the same shaft and when coming to a stop if the car is not brought to stationary stop rather than coast the dsg is confused I.e will the driver slow down or will he/she want to reverse???
  • Vauxhall Astra - 2010 Astra SRi handbrake issues? 20 May 2013 (Forum)
12851-Vauxhall-Astra-Handbrake-Problems ) and it appears that there is a significant problems with the handbrake system on these models. It appears that the brake struggles to hold on an incline - which is dangerous for obvious reasons! i have a small family and do not wish to put them at unnecessary risk.   Can I ask if anyone here has had any similar problems with this model?
  • 1.6 Petrol 2004 8P - Rattling Exhaust Like Noise Audi A3 8 May 2013 (Forum)
Its more noticable in motion, In very loud if you wind down the passenger window, and noticable to passer by's! Not convinced it is the exhaust. There are no obvious sign of problems with the brakes and the vehicle steering feels OK,  and the engine seems to run fine with no warning lights.  I'm thinking maybe a loose baffle? Or wheel bearing maybe. Heres hoping someone else may have experienced similar with even with and Octavia, Leon or Golf 5?
  • N/a - Autobox + aged drivers = hazard 10 Mar 2013 (Forum)
Fortunately she was only shaken and confused, no one else was injured, but unless there genuinely is some demonic mechanical gremlin which activates when elderly drivers try to park or maneouvre, I suspect this and the other cases of loss of control are due to the driver desperately pressing the accelerator to try and stop;  HJ always recommends left foot braking with automatics (I've always done so when I had autos). Would it not be a good idea for anyone selling an auto to someone accustomed to manuals to take time to emphasise this is the safe method?
  • Ford Fiesta 1.4 Titanium, 59 plate - Front discs and pads 9 Mar 2013 (Forum)
I'd also be grateful for an opinion on the necessity or otherwise of using a torque wrench to tighten bolts when reassembling brake mechanisms, rather than just giving them a "good welly".  Views on this appear to differ. :0) Cheers       Cheers.
  • VW 1997 1.9 Polo - Diesel motor surging 12 Jan 2013 (Forum)
Gentlemen and Ladies, Since my diesel car last ran out of fuel ... my car has a habit of over rev'ing and surging at low rev's and also starting to drag (choke) then release itself and accelorate away again - while I am driving on the motorway at say... 70 mph around the 3000 rev's - then surging and giving me so much power that i have to brake to maintain the speed limit. I can feel something just go klunk and the surge is unmistakable, lovely power but short lived.  My car is a non-turbo job, I have replaced both the air and the fuel filter recently.
  • Vauxhall Astra MK4 2001 - MAF Sensor Replaced. Still problems.. 10 Jul 2012 (Forum)
I was informed that my MAF sensor had gone, so I replaced it. The idling is now perfect, however, when approaching junctions and when braking, the accelerator revs as if I pushed on the throttle, 2 or 3 times, then it calms down as i come to a stop at the junction. Weird stuff.. any suggestions? Ive checked the butterfly valve in the throttle body, its clean and runs smoothly.
  • Audi A6 Avant 2.7 TDI Quattro - Intermittent Electrics 29 Jun 2012 (Forum)
The condition seems to be sensitive to the instrument warning panel indicator, as I have noticed that if the windscreen top up fluid or brake pad warning signal (need replacing soon) appears, it provokes the condition above. Any ideas?
  • Citroen DS - 1964 citroen DS, should I buy? Is it rare? 1 Jan 2012 (Forum)
The price is good I think, he wants $1500 for it, but will I spend way more to get it going again? The motor does turn over, and the body is straight and solid, needs headliner, probably brakes, don´t know about the rest. Thanks ahead for any help!Mike
  • ford focus estate - replacing discs and pads 11 Dec 2011 (Forum)
hi all. i had new discs and pads fitted 18 months ago by local mechanic who ive used for years. i had brake judder. this fixed my judder. he has just done interim service and advised that discs looked worn. theres a groove on one disc. i am a precision engineer by trade and would say is no deeper than 0.1mm deep. on the edge of the disc is a lip no bigger than 0.4mm. so are they still ok or have to be replaced?
  • Fiat Ducato X250 motorhome/ Alko chassis A class - overheating rear steel wheels 4 Nov 2011 (Forum)
The handbrake is set exactly in accordance with Fiat's  manual and neither the disc brakes nor drum shoes are binding. With the rear jacked up and the handbrake fully "off" the wheels rotate reasonably freely , after some initial slight "stickiness". Yet after travelling 12 miles or so , the wheels in the vicinity of their retaining bolts are hot !
