BMW any model - Driving Standards 31 Jan 2014 (Forum)
I travel on a dual carriageway it’s not that long about 1 mile the speed limit is 40mph .About half way along there are traffic lights .There are on regular occasions vehicles that set off down the road like at F1 starting grid (I assume that vehicle fuel is verry cheep to some) get I guess to about 60mph only to anchor on at the midway lights they are usually on red (as they are linked lights) and then off again .If someone is doing any reasonable speed or not going fast enough in the right hand lane then it seems it’s OK not just to break the speed limit but to cut up anyone in left lane so as to undertake because they are in such a rush. -
Peugeot 407 SW 2L diesel HDi Auto - pollution warning light 20 Jan 2014 (Forum)
Booked the car in and had to pay for connecting to the computer system to fault find~£80.00. Problem was a partially blocked fuel filter which I didn't have to pay for. ( I think it should have been replaced on the last service ~40k, and they didn't bother or forgot.) Had to fit new brake pads as they were very low and due soon anyway. -
Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 01 1.6 petrol - starting problem 15 Nov 2013 (Forum)
Engine requires 4 to 5 seconds of cranking to start. Engine cranks over very well but no sign of trying to start. I assume that fuel, spark or both are not being commanded by the ECU. After 4 to 5 seconds engine actually begins to 'fire' and will then run but runs a bit hesitantly / varying idle speed for a couple of seconds as though something is being adjusted. -
Worst diesel you have owned? 18 Oct 2013 (Forum)
I have just sold the worst diesel car I have owned. The main reasons were the performance and fuel economy. It was a 3 year old Renault Scenic 1.9DCI owned from new and it couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding. It had 105 hp (some of those horses must have been dead) and managed low 40s on a run and about 35-37mpg tootling around. -
Citroen C5 1.6HDi to Citroen C3 1.4HDi - From a 1.6HDi to a 1.4HDi - thoughts? 6 Jun 2013 (Forum)
Now I drive around 30-40 miles a week and no regular long drives. I live on one of the Hebridean Islands and fuel is very expensive (£1.65 average per litre of diesel) so I'd prefer to get another diesel car - and, it seems that the equivalent size diesel drives better than the petrol. I'm wondering what it'd be like to go from a 110bhp 1.6HDi to a 70bhp 1.4HDi, bearing in mind that the C3 is 500kg lighter than my current C5? -
E46 320D Automatic - Automatic gearbox noises 22 May 2013 (Forum)
I recently aquired an imacculate 2003 E46 320D Auto BMW with 210k kms on the clock. Thanks to posts on this site I managed to sort out the faulty fuel pump relay which seems to plague many of these cars. My other problem is when the gearbox changes from 3rd to 4th gear there is a sort of rumbling / vibrating noise with a slight hesitation. -
All - E10 -not a boring government form but new biofuel 12 Mar 2013 (Forum)
My question is does anyone have any idea if their old car will run on this stuff? Or will it dissolve the fuel system from within? Cos I don't. A bit of googling mainly from australian sites suggests my 2003 Xtrail will run on it but Nissan do NOT recommend it. If it was a 2004 car Nissan say it would be fine. -
A thread which was about cyclists 25 Feb 2013 (Forum)
http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/askhj/answer/25747/cyclists-at-traffic-lights In a nutshell, asked about cyclists placing themselves in queues or using the ASL lines at junctions out leader replies: I don't see why people who pay nothing for using the roads and pay no fuel tax and make no contribution to the economy should be allowed to hold up those who pay for the roads and earn the money we all live on. HJ, Cyclists pay the same for using the roads as many of the zero VED cars you reccomend. -
vauxhall vivaro - 58 vivaro 2.0lt hellllllllllllp 20 Feb 2013 (Forum)
ok firstly ive had 4 injectors replaced as had a power/stutter problem.ten days after i got it out of garage i started it, drove 500 yrds and it conked out again and has never started since..(4 weeks its been in garage) guy has replaced an injector had it to bits had auto electrician three times look at it. they both said they were 99% sure it was fuel pump as it was/is not getting any pressure top end? wotever that means. anyway a new diesel pump has been fitted £475.00 and still no pressure (he says) van has been in garage coming up to 5 weeks and still no closure/repair. the bill is going up n up n up and still got no van.i am at the end of my tether tbh and seeking some advice. -
Ford Focus mk1.5 2005 1.8 TDCi - Focus tdci 1.8 power loss after 3000rpm 6 Feb 2013 (Forum)
I have had it on the diagnostics and no fault codes are showing. It has been regularly serviced with a new fuel filter only 4k miles ago. Last year all 4 injectors went and they were replaced along with an egr valve and maf sensor. I would take it to a ford dealer but with labour rates circa £50 an hour its not something I can afford to do. -
Hyundai Santa Fe - Major hesitation issues. 3 Feb 2013 (Forum)
Air filter is relatively new and the car has had injectorcleaner through it. None of which has helped or changed the issue. fuel filter is a cow to swap and in my opinion wouldnt cause the issue. Would a faulty air flow meter give these symptons or a dodgy knock sensor maybe? Even possibly the EGR system? -
vw golf tdi 150 2003 - mk4 golf tdi water loss 22 Jan 2013 (Forum)
my temp gauge is erratic. barely moves but on a long motorway run it hit middle. i knew of a water leak but thought i had sorted it with radweld. shorter journeys made the 'check coolant' message show on dash, but never made temp gauge move. a good motorway run made gauge get to middle. then back to nil. then eventually middle again (90f) then went as high as 110, water boiling, but no 'check coolant' message. i do have a replacement stat. car drives fine, though IMO slightly down on fuel economy compared to book figures. recently changed oil. no mayo or sludge. header tank looks sound. no obvious leaks anywhere. engine has only done 61k. could the stat be causing water loss? water pump and cambelt changed 9 months ago. help! -
Ford Fiesta Van 1996 1.8D - kangaroo juice 2 Nov 2012 (Forum)
Its years since I had to do my own repairs and so am a bit rusty although I never did have much to do with diesels, so we are looking at the 1996 fiesta 1.8D It has suddenly developed a problem as if we have some kangaroo juice in her, I have done the obvious by changing the fuel filter but it has not made any difference. now I will point out that the problem seems to be only at low speed once you get to around 40 and above it seems to be ok, the only other thing I can say if at all its relevant is that this was happening from when I first got the van but at that time it only seemed to be in second gear when accelorating from a junction Any feed back would be appreciated greatly thanks all in anticipation Dave -
Ford Mondeo Graphite - Engine stutters and loses power 29 Sep 2012 (Forum)
He was advised by his local garage to take it to a Main Ford dealer who would have the correct diagnostic equipment. All they could say was it may be the fuel filter which they changed. Needless to say on his way back home the problem re-occured. Unfortunately he lives out in the wilds of Northumberland and the Ford garage is a 50 mile round trip. Any advice would be gratefully appreciated. -
Chrysler Voyager - ignition problem 19 Jul 2012 (Forum)
Good morning, i need some advise on where to look, i have read a previouse customers problem and it matchs mine down to the T When turning over my car to start, none of my electrical panals desplay mileage, fuel or rev counter.....the car will turn over and then stop with in seconds after turning the key. It was sugested that it was a common fault to do with the heater control panel, the earth wire would melt to make the "bus" communication 12volts...what is the meaning of "bus"? -
Fiesta tdci 1.4 (56) - starting problems 8 Jul 2012 (Forum)
It was fine rest of day, fine next day, then same thing happened. Each time it can be started by priming but there appears to be air in the fuel lines. Took it to garage and he had it 2 days, started fine every time while there, but the day after I got it back same thing happened. Garage has checked to see if air is getting in anywhere but could find no problem. -
vw bora tdi 130 pd - cylinder head replacement now the car wont run 14 Jun 2012 (Forum)
I brought a second hand head and fitted it along with a full cambelt kit and a new belt damper etc. Its all back together but it just wont fire. when i turn it over it seems to drain the fuel from the filter. if i put some easy start down it does start but then stops obviously when the easy start runs out. iv read somewhere that i will need to put the injectors out of the other head into the replacement one. is this right ?? -
High mileage Honda Jazz's? 15 May 2012 (Forum)
I am having to sell my beloved citroen xsara1.8 auto because it's 14 years old and replacing the rad will be £300+ and mechanic said it might unsettle other stuff. I'm trying to be good and go for something more fuel efficient, so test drove a c3 1.6 sensodrive and hated the engine noise and suspension. I know Honda Jazz's are meant to be great, but I've only managed to save £2000, so there are only high mileage jazz's available, because it's a small engine a dealer advised me against buying a honda jazz with a high mileage as he said it would have put lots of strain over the years on the gear box. -
Ford Focus - Focus 2007 1.6 diesel longer to start after server 19 Apr 2012 (Forum)
Not enough to be a problem, but I'm worried in case it degrades over time / suffers more in winter. I spoke to the garage who did the service and they said that they didn't change the fuel filter because its a long life filter on these cars, and that maybe that is what is causing the problem. Doesn't make sense to me because they haven't changed the filter, and the problem wasn't there before the service. -
Phase 1 Xsara 1.6 8v manual - Xsara Revs to 5000rpm when hot. 5 Dec 2011 (Forum)
All seemed well and then the car started to rev to about 3000rpm when hot and under no load so changed the ICV again and made no difference. Changed the fuel filter and upon failing MOT on emissions also changed O2 sensor and MAP sensor. At the same time changed air temp sender and checked everything over. Ran OK for a couple of days and has now decided to rev to 5000rpm when hot. with all the sensors changed could the car be drawing air in after the throttle body causing it to rev.
