Retrospective views road transport and Electricity 16 Apr 2008 (Forum)
If an electric based transport system had been the focus from the time motorways were built what could have been achieved by now? Even if the inner two lanes of Motorways were electrified for HGV`s with full nuclear capacity electricity generation. Hybrid trucks, mains electric /diesel? If hybrid cars could charge at home, then somehow pick up mains power on the motorways, later on other main roads. -
Vauxhall Astra G Petrol (1998 - 2004) - Is this a fair price for the work carried out? 22 Jan 2008 (Forum)
I went in and asked them to look at a leak for me, the estimate has come back with: Rear spring remove replace - Qty (which I'm guessing is hours) 0.5 - NET: 42.98 Sump gasket Replace - Qty: 1.5 - NET: 128.93 G/Box Gasket - Qty: 1 - NET: 85.95 Drive Shaft Seal O/S - Qty: 0.7 - NET: 60.17 PARTS USED Set-Rear Springs - Qty: 1 - NET: 151.00 NSI Locking Compund - Qty: 1 - NET: 8.50 NSI Gasket - Qty: 1 - NET: 4.48 NSI Seal Ring - Qty: 1 - NET: 6.45 TOTAL: NET - 488.46 VAT - 85.48 TOTAL - 573.94 What's really annoyed me is that I have just had it serviced and MOT, which it passed, at an independent place and it passed first time. -
MOT time - the inverse lottery effect 13 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Having just got over the shock that everything SS jnr wanted for Christmas costs hundreds of pounds and involves memory cards ( whatever happened to airfix ? )....We now, as with many other self-employed people have to pay 2006/2007's tax bill.......oh and my VAT's due as well ! Just wanted to offer my services as a "wheelman" if there are any good bank jobs going down this week ? Would be prepared to throw in the use of the Mondy provided it gets through its test ;-) -
Citroen Xsara Picasso (2000 - 2010) - Insurance Scam? 17 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Would the Police be interested in this? My mate is seething, he seems completely powerless to stop this claim progressing. He?s now going to see some of his neighbours to see if they recall his car being in the drive and whether they would be prepared to produce a witness statement. Any comments gratefully received. -
Suitable car for tall person with injured knee 7 Dec 2007 (Forum)
I've been driving petrol Volvo automatics for a number of years; an early XC70 (not for the faint hearted as it was built at 3.55pm on a Friday afternoon just before the summer holiday) and a couple of S80's. These have served me well and would no doubt continue to do so were it not for the fact that my commute has now increased from 14 miles a day to at least 44 and my fuel bill has unsurprisingly rocketed. -
Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - Another TDCI problem - smoke from radiator grille 10 Oct 2007 (Forum)
The £1000 bill has got me worried and I'm thinking of trying to p/x it quick. PS It's done 120k miles, 100k or so of it on the motorway. Thanks in advance. s -
Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - fuel system sensors 1 Oct 2007 (Forum)
Our car has also occasionally stalled on pulling off ever since we purchased it at 6 months old, even with resonable revs - The head-honcho at our Ford dealership merely says that they are prone to this! Any thoughts? {Post reformatted to remove all the >>>'s - DD} -
PT Cruise replacement 22 Sep 2007 (Forum)
I don't know if a petrol Berlingo would be OK or not ? My suggestions are: ? Citroen C4 Picasso or, original Xsara Picasso. ? Ford C-Max, possibly S-Max ? Maybe, a SEAT Altea (XL) not sure if it is raised enough. ? VW Touran ? Nissan Cashcow ? At a push a Renault Scenic or Vauxhall Zafira though, he may not remain a friend if I recommend either of these. -
Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 2001 LX 1.4 Questions 18 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Is there anyway to check for an alarm? Thanks in advance for any help you can all give. Steve s -
Peugeot 405 Diesel (1988 - 1996) - 96 TD Central Locking Problem 4 Sep 2007 (Forum)
I am suspecting it is either a problem with the alarm, or the control unit has failed. Many Thanks. s -
A close shave ! / CLS V12 ? 30 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Strange thing in hindsight is that I am sure it had a V12 badge on the front wing behind the front wheel though afterwards recalled that the most powerful CLS is a V8, I have checked this am and it is the CLS63AMG with a 6.3 ltr V8, perhaps it was a Brabus or something or perhaps I was mistaken and it was a new S-Class. -
smokey 1.9TD peugeot expert van 22 Jun 2007 (Forum)
hi i have a peugeot expert van 1.9 turbo diesel 98 S plate has done 165k. it actually goes well but i have a couple of questions that i need some mechanical advice on. first thing, when i start it for the first time of the day it doesnt seem to be firing on all cylinders, like its mis-timing, and wont usually start. then second time no problem starts a treat. the only trouble when it does start i get some blue smoke. ok thats the first problem, the second is i am getting black smoke when i am driving along. not all the time. i get it when i floor it in first and second, say pulling out of junctions but again not all the time. i also get black smoke when i go up steep hills. say im going up the hill in 3rd and the revs start to go down. so i change down to 2nd but its high revs so up to 3rd but its not enough power to pull. when its in 3rd it smokes but when its in 2nd and high revs, no smoke !!!!!! -
'clocking' dilemma, how to sell 26 May 2007 (Forum)
Which then meant i knew the car was clocked. I'd only ever intended on keeping it as a temp measure as a man in his 20's didn't really want a Volvo 240.....but how to get rid? I didn't want to lie to anyone or do anything dodgy, but neither did i want to lose too much on the car either. So in the end i let a relative sell it for me privately, made no comment about the mileage, instructed them to state that their relative was selling it and they did not know much about the history (which was true) and leave it at that. -
Recommend a used supermini/small fam. 30 Apr 2007 (Forum)
As my wife complains about lack of bootspace and the girls aren't getting any smaller, I am at a loss as to why she wants another Fiesta and I started looking at 206's, Fabias and Clios before realising that they are (apart from perhaps the Fabia) equally as small as the Fiesta, so I'm now thinking of Focus or 306? Is the Fabia notably bigger that the Fiesta? I've seen reviews saying it's way better than the Fiesta and also reviews saying it's cramped... depends on who's in it, I suppose...? -
Where's the feedback loop 30 Apr 2007 (Forum)
When a train or and aircraft has an incident, or near incident, there is often an investigation where they trace back to the root cause(s) of the problem and attempt to fix them. We're (quite rightly) outraged when a similar incident occurs. Yet we're all making the same mistakes time after time on the roads - It seems to me that we're missing that vital feedback loop on what mistakes we and others are making and what we can do to put them right. -
Advice needed please 29 Mar 2007 (Forum)
On inspection, I found that the 4 doors needed replacing due to the well know corrosion problem that many early mk3's had. I agreed with the dealer that I would take the car and put a deposit down on the 18th March (my understanding was that this would take the car off sale). I contacted my local ford dealer the same day and they took pics of all the doors and asked ford uk to authorise replacement of all the doors. -
Whose responsibility? 29 Jan 2007 (Forum)
The Renault dealer charges 70 ph, and they want the car for 2 days (for now), so it could get pricey. Questions: Who?s (legal) responsibility is this? How do I deal with it? Who foots the bill for the extra? Should I be handing it back to the Citroen dealer lock stock and let them sort the whole thing out? They have been pretty decent to date. -
Insurance Company refuses to pay up. 29 Jan 2007 (Forum)
I have always considered tyres a very important part of my maintenance regime and have never scrimped when replacing them, so it 's ironic that this should happen. If the tyre was indeed illegal, would I have any legal claim on my garage? Baring in mind that only on the 22nd November 2006, my Main Dealer garage had swapped the tyres around front to back and adjusted the tracking of the car (as I felt it was puling to the right). -
C`Rail misfueling Engineers solutions? 18 Jan 2007 (Forum)
(With emphasis to elegant mechanical/electrical engineering rather than ( for example) a triangular *cat flap* on the filler neck and matching pump, oh, and with just a nod to occam`s razor :) Some suggested parameters It needs to work anywhere, not just a UK solution, so its ok at that rural garage in France and over the EU borders. Its a good engineering solution before cost cutting is considered.
