Honda Shuttle/Odyssey (1995 - 2000) - 1999 2.3 Holds 2nd gear in kick-down 25 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Took a bit of a risk because it has a sketchy service history (I know, I know). Anyway, It seems like a great car. The auto box selects reverse, drive ect. really quickly and very smooth from park or neutral and when driving changes are very smooth. Only problem I can find is when sitting at about 40 - 50 and floor the accelerator, it drops to 2nd and will climb to just over 60mph (just under 6000rpm I think) then just hold 2nd gear. -
Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - Car problem and new car advice 17 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Obviously, I need to go and test drive these cars first to get a feel for them but just wondered what everyone thought. Many thanks. -
Sainsbury's near colliers wood 5 Aug 2008 (Forum)
if you know this are you might be able to help. I am currently driving a hire van, and was driving past this store today(entrance on LHS) via r'bout up towards Colliers wood. At the end of this road, T.L goes to Colliers wood. There are 2 other lanes, one allows cars to go straight on, into retails outlet unit, or turn right, the rhl allows for cars to only turn right. -
Mazda 626 (1987 - 1991) - Why is my fuel consumption so good? 6 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Strange topic I know, but 7 months ago I bought a Mazda 626 2.0 SE petrol 134bhp (manual) with 96k on the clock. I drive in a 'spirited' fashion when road conditions allow, have no qualms about overtaking queues of slower traffic on A roads when safe to do so, and cruise on motorways at 85mph. I do a limited amount of urban driving, and I am sure my reading of the road ahead, with subsequent lack of heavy braking helps, but I still manage to average 37mpg week in, week out, even with climate control permanently switched on and a fully loaded 6 disc CD player playing loudly. -
Best way to give employee a car? 19 May 2008 (Forum)
Give him the usual HMRC mileage rates and tell him to sort himself out. I am concerned that using 3, the car he would drive would not be of a standard suitable for the work, so would prefer 1 or 2. How does it work and what are the costs/benefits? Thanks -
Skoda Fabia (2000 - 2007) - 2005 1.2 - Help please to identify the problem 4 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Bought the above car from a Skoda dealership 2 weeks ago, the car is almost 3 years old and has done 17950miles. Last week when driving there was an loud grating noise that sounded like metal scraping on metal coming from behind the drivers seat, but underneath the car. I pulled over thinking I had driven over something. Nothing there. -
Clutch Swaps - the Good, the Bad and the Ugly! 6 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Some clutch changes are so easy - I remember Vauxhalls from the mid 80's, where you removed a cover, slid back the input shaft from the end of the gearbox, and changed your clutch. Engine didn't need to come out. I counted that 'Good' Wouldn't really count most rear wheels drives bad, because apart from P6 Rovers, you could just pull the box off after undoing gear lever, propshaft and support. Then along came front wheel drives. Some of them are not too bad. I changed the clutch in my 1986 MKII Golf TD, and that wasn't too much of a hassle. -
Price of Shell diesel 13 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Or 3 - here comes the conspiracy theory - is it Shell driving up prices with the lure of cashback via their new credit card so that overall they achieve a price increase over and above that which might otherwise have been possible. Also with the current strong upward trend in prices this gives the other oil majors the opportunity to follow them up even if by not as much as Shell. -
ACPO Traffic Chief - Receives speeding NIP. 4 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Meredydd Hughes, head of roads policing for the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO), was allegedly caught driving at 90mph in a 60mph zone in North Wales while on holiday last May. A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Police said: "Chief Constable Meredydd Hughes has received a notice of prosecution in respect of an alleged driving offence in North Wales in the early morning of a bank holiday Monday in May while on holiday. -
Overtaking in London 21 Sep 2007 (Forum)
In another incident a driver also put his left indicator on, but kept driving at the same speed; fortunately there was no oncoming traffic so I was able to overtake - thinking about the incident now there was nowhere for him to go so I have no idea why he was indicating. My question is am I wrong to overtake before they have pulled in, even if they have slowed down to a snail's pace and the only possible manoeuvre for them to make is to pull in to the side of the road?? -
Milton Keynes - can't believe it's just me 18 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Is MK the only place where a 4x4 is essential and where the labyrinthine residential streets mean you need sat-nav to go shopping even if you live there? Unlike many, I've never till now been an MK basher, but the driving there makes my blood boil. AAARRGH! -
Petrol Grade 95 or 97 ??? 2 Aug 2007 (Forum)
- - - - The general rule, I understood from this at the time is that for modern engines (where adustments of this type are made automatically as part of normal operation) you may be better to use 97 when doing long periods of high speed motorway driving with a car load of family or luggage. Around town, on your own in stop start driving, you are wasting your money. Any truth in this??? Any comments?? Anything from perople who really are in the know? -
Yobbo driver and the Blame Game... 10 Jul 2007 (Forum)
A man who took an armoured vehicle on a joy ride and flattened a car has been banned from driving. Jack Carroll "gleefully" drove the 25-tonne Warrior at Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire, in July last year. Carroll, from Anfield, Merseyside, pleaded guilty to taking the vehicle without consent ... -
'Nuisance' parking - how many cars? 29 Jun 2007 (Forum)
I have two cars and SWMBO has one. We keep them all parked on the street outside as we have no private land or drive available. All have valid tax/MoT/insurance, and we never block anyone else's drive access. Unfortunately, our neighbour has passed the odd snide comment along the lines of: "that's quite a collection you've got there" - partly because we sometimes have to park outside their house on 'their' bit of road. -
Fiesta 1.4 TDCI Engine characteristics?? 17 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Hi Just got a 2003 Fiesta 1.4 tdci and it holds its revs between changes up to 2000 rpm tho above this ie 3000 upover the revs hold and increase by a couple of hundred rpm even when I drive as accurately as poss taking off the accelerator before dipping the clutch.. Is this a problem or a characteristic - it seems to me that it could be an air intake issue?!?!? it also sounds a bit like its pinking on acceleration higher gear lower revs. -
Corolla battery/alternator ?? 3 Apr 2007 (Forum)
have a slightly srange (or perhaps obvious to those in the know) problem with my corolla 1994 1.6GLi 16v EFI A couple of times this week when trying to start , when I turn the ignition the dashboard lights go dim, as if the battery is flat, by as soon as i touch the throttle - before the engine has fired the dashboard lights go bright and it turns over and fires instantly. Then drives OK and starts perfectly the next time.... I am therefore suspecting the battery and or alternator. I don't have low charge lights on when I am driving. If I use a voltmeter to test the battery :- (A) Do I need to disconnect the leads from the terminals first (B) what voltage should Iexpect across the terminals (no load) To test the alternator (A) How do I get the test-leads onto the output, as there seems to be just a multiuplug connection - do I have to disconnect this or is there a terminal exposed somewhere I can get the probe/croc-clips of the voltmeter on to ? -
Joes done it again. 24 Nov 2006 (Forum)
Certainly think is the best car yet I have bought through Joe. The Escort is immaculate inside and out. Only one small mark on the rear bumper. Drives extremely well and is perfect for what she needs. Best of all though, the cars were both extremely good bargains and exactly as Joe described. -
BBC electronic stability control 11 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Question is, is it worth the hassle. One person comments in a newsgroup he took his car for a service and after 1 year of driving, the computer logs showed the ESP activated a total of 0 times. Basically, drive reasonably, and it won't be needed. Ice and snow, and oil slips I think are the only places they might realisically be needed. -
Vehicles for wheelchair users.. 3 Oct 2006 (Forum)
The step is likely to be my mother in a wheelchair for all outside journey's - even ones around the corner - and to see her attempt to get into a Suzuki Wagon R+ last night (which is extremely easy to access) was pitiful. So, if she gets a wheelchair, we need a car that my father can drive, and get her into the car easily, without removing her from the chair. I have seen the adverts for Brotherwood conversions of vans. Are they any good? Are there alternatives, both in terms of other conversion companies, or different types of vehicle, as my father has always enjoyed driving interesting cars, and I can see him taking to a van easily. -
