Faking it… The Mitsuoka Yœga Around a year after the FX4 had been replaced by the TX1, Japanese company Mitsuoka came up with this extraordinary pastiche (call it a tribute if you must) in 1998. Based on the home-market only Nissan Cube (itself a development of the March, or Micra), the Yœga did at least have one feature the FX4 could never boast – a hatchback. Quite what the PCO would have made of it, however, is anyone’s guess… When production of the Yœga ceased, Mitsuoka became the official Japanese importer and distributor for the TX1′s replacement, the TXII, which used the Ford DuraTorq engine in place of TX1′s Nissan unit.

Having established thesmelves on the world stage as manufacturers of dependable, reliable cars (albeit slightly dull), the next stage towards the global domination that would follow was to create cars that appealed to specific markets, rather than simply exporting domestic models. As a result, Toyota, Nissan, Mazda and Honda all created not just specific models, but also unique brands for the USA (Lexus, Infiniti, Eunos and Acura). Europe, though, was more discerning than simply requiring a new brand name, which led a few of the Japanese maker to create cars especially for such markets.

Measuring dependability based on problems experienced by owners over the last 12 months, Skoda has trumped Kia, Suzuki, Nissan and Toyota, who finished 2 nd to 5 th in that order. The study only looked at cars whose drivers had owned them for one to three years, and separated problems in to eight categories, including engine and transmission, car exterior, interior, controls/media/navigation, seats, and ventilation.

Among the cars promised at both venues are the Ferrari 250 SWB (Dirty Dozen), Aston Martin GT12 (Supercars Seven), Paul Newman’s Nissan 300ZX racer (Race Car Ten), and, er, the Flux Capacitor - a customised Enfield Electric car with a 500hp electric motor in place of the original 8hp one (Fun Four). Just a few of the other mouth-watering machines promised include F1 cars from Lotus, McLaren, Toleman, Arrows, Ferrari and Benetton; an Austin A60 pick-up dragster; Colin McRae’s Subaru Impreza rally car; a La Ferrari supercar; a 1932 Ford Deuce Coupe; a fearsome 1903 Itala race car and a 1968 VW Split Screen camper.

The little blue Renault 4 stayed in Bulgan this morning, and could be there some time as the crew are now waiting for parts to fix the gearbox. The biggest drama of the day was the Japanese crew in the Nissan Fairlady 240Z rolling the car on a tight right hander, sliding on the gravel into a ditch. They were rescued by Andy Inskip, who banged out some of the dents, fixed the front windscreen and got the car running again.
