Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 99 1.8 Speeedo drops to 0 & stall when slows (drop 26 Nov 2009 (Forum)
This morning was my first real run out in it (10 mile trip to work) Was traveeling along at about 70-75, when speedo dropped to 0 (for what seemed an eternity, was probably 10-20 secs) before coming back to life - rev counter/fuel & temp gauge all remained correct. Any ideas on what this could be? Also, as I approached work, I slowed down and dropped into 2nd and the engine stalled. I had a problem like this on a fiesta i had previously and it turned out to be Idle sensor valve needed cleaning. -
Audi A8 (1994 - 2003) - 97 4.2 S8 refuses to start 7 Nov 2009 (Forum)
I have tried to VAGCom it but I cannot establish communication with the ECU (not good). I thought it may be the fuel relay but that it is not where it is supposed to be according to the manual which is in the fuse compartment in the RH footwell, there are no relays at all in that compartment. It is listed as R17 but I cannot find that in the LH footwell relay panel either. -
Peugeot 406 (1999 - 2004) - 02 2.0 HDi loss of power 23 Oct 2009 (Forum)
It gets up to 80-90-100 mph, and sits there comfortably, but seems to take an age to do so. I've not noticed any reduction in fuel economy, lumpy running, black smoke ( the general things you associate with injector problems ) and the car appears to run fine, its just this 'diminished' performance that's puzzling me. Can anyone help ?? -
Hyundai Getz (2002 - 2008) - Hyundai Getz service cost £350 9 Oct 2009 (Forum)
My nearest dealer is quoting £350 for a 4 year service. They tell me it includes change of oil and filter/air filter/spark plugs/brake fluid / fuel filter and inspecting the rest as normal. The Issue is I also have a noise that can only be described a 'piston slap' in the engine.(more than tappets) I want to get this sorted under the 5 year warranty and as service is slightly overdue and have no other hyundai dealers nearby feel I have to go with this! -
Volvo S80 (1998 - 2006) - 98 2.9 Compression Problems 9 Oct 2009 (Forum)
Finally got it running fine and the compression losses started randomly in different cylinders. He used two separate equipment to confirm it. So after rebuilding top end, new fuel injectors, swapped cold packs, many confirmed tests, we have a mystery motor. Any suggestions on tests he can run? Will a new computer module help fix the problem. We are stumped and will have to sell the car for parts if we can get a solution. -
Volkswagen Passat (2005 - ) - 09 110Tdi CR - Amazing Economy 30 Sep 2009 (Forum)
We are considering a new estate with the same engine under scrappage. Just returned this morning and I am amazed to note minimal movement on the fuel guage and a recorded average of 58.6 mpg for the journey on the computer. This was a mix of motorway and slower second class roads but driving normally, overtaking where I could and generally making good progress. -
Honda CR-V II (2002 - 2006) - 05 2.2 rear diff noises when on full lock 10 Sep 2009 (Forum)
To be honest we've had so many problems with this car, bought new in 2005 (2.2 deisel executive 41K now) that I'm tempted to get rid and go back to BMW, although financially it's not a good time for us. For interest, it does about 40mpg, more on a run, and fuel consumption got worse when the egr valve was changed. I've done an additional oil change between annual services, as it does a lot of short runs. Handling was improved when I had 235/60-16 fitted all round, as was noise in the cabin and grip particularly in the wet-recommended. -
Ford Fiesta (2002 - 2008) - Is there much difference between tyres? 4 Sep 2009 (Forum)
The girlfriend is an enthusiastic but not fast driver and the same for me, so are we going to gain anything more paying £10 or £20 a tyre more for the Michelin's over the Pirelli's? Will they be any safer or save more fuel etc etc? -
BMW 3-Series E46 (1998 - 2005) - 01 2.0D Display malfunction 25 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Our 320d has been running well since it had it's third (!) turbo 18 months ago, but it has two malfunctions of the dashboard display: i. The fuel economy readout is always 7.1mpg - even though the moving needle display works correctly and the car actually returns about 51mpg. ii. A outline of the car, together with a red lamp symbol appears on the dash sometimes even though all the bulbs are ok. -
Honda Accord UK (1993 - 1998) - 96 2.0 Tapping noise when accelerating 12 Jul 2009 (Forum)
It is very pronounced on cold start but can still be heard after long motor way runs. My wife says it sounds like I'm running some great big sewing machine! Could it be the fuel - I have made several trips to France recently and have filled up with 95 E10 grade petrol. Most petrol stations now have only this grade and rumour has it that this new stuff can cause problems with old cars. -
Breakdown that was hardest to fix 25 May 2009 (Forum)
The instructions were to check if it was anything obvious, if not, drag it back to the garage. On arrival, you always checked for fuel and sparks first, which I did. Both present, and the van would run, but not well. I managed to get it running better by retarding the ignition, but it was still not right. Towed it back to the garage, and the job was solved after a lot of head scratching by people far more expert than me. -
KIA Cee'd (2007 - 2010) - On the verge of buying a ceed 4 Apr 2009 (Forum)
I would like to ask the Backroomers their vierws on thism, and in particular if there are any ceed owners out there who can share their ownersihip experiences, particularly in relation to the 1.4. Info around ownership experiences, relability, running costs, fuel economy etc would be really helpful Thank you in advance! -
1600E,Spitfire et al - yesterdays heros surpassed 15 Feb 2009 (Forum)
I just happened to look at the performance figures though by chance - the 1600E is around the same to 60mph as my `umble Punto van and 6mph slower - while using nearly three times as much fuel - despite being around 180lbs lighter. In the progression of things, It must surely be the same across the board with humble modern motors.. It seems we eventually got `sports cars` without having to buy one.......... -
Volkswagen Golf II (1983 - 1992) - 91 1.6 erratic idle problem 7 Feb 2009 (Forum)
I have an erratic idle problem on my driver, fuel economy is good, starts first time, every time. But the revs fluctuate between 500 and 800, often stalling when just warm. Temp guage seems accurate, just had thermostat put in, which helped but its still erratic. -
Peugeot 307 (2001 - 2007) - 02 2.0 hdi 90hp anti pollution fault 6 Feb 2009 (Forum)
my 307 2.0 hdi 2002 90 hp model sometimes shows anti pollution fault and engine managment light stays on and car goes in get you home mode ie fuel aditive crap, just normal cat box. could it be egr related, friend partner van did this same thing, also when plug out air flow meter car has got better low end torque but plugged back in now, just checking. car has been doing this for about a year now only about once a month, but now in cold weather, last couple of weeks it does it every day. need help fast, cheers -
Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 05 2.0tdci starting - struggle to tickover 1 Feb 2009 (Forum)
The engine starts on the key then runs rough until its revved up, after this it runs not bad. Sometimes it starts ok and runs ok. Driving the car it runs fine and the fuel consumption is acceptible (45mpg by filler/50 on the computer) Ford service suggested that there is some loss of compression on 2 cylinders and that there may be bent conrods/gudgeon pins, there is no vibration while driving even at high revs. -
Citroen Saxo (1997 - 2003) - 99 1.6 Engine suddenly dies while travelling along 9 Dec 2008 (Forum)
After a few minutes it can sometimes be restarted and performs as well as ever. I've had AA assistance but they could not diagnose thye problem suggesting it was fuel linked. My garage have checked every circuit etc. using their diagnostic computer and failed to find a fault. The ECU has been checked and found OX. All manner of suggestions have been proposed but their attitude seem to be ' lets replace this' (ie throttle housing' or crankcase sender), and then see if this will solve the problem. -
Will this damage my tyre? 6 Dec 2008 (Forum)
I started to fill up but found that the pump was running very very slowly, I seemed to be standing at the pump for ages when suddenly fuel started pouring out from the car's filler pipe, I stopped filling immediately but diesel spilled out all down the bodywork and covered my rear tyre/alloy. The nozzles auto cut off hadn't worked for some reason, I told the staff in the station who said they would close the pump and cover the spill with sand. -
Nissan Sunny (1991 - 1995) - 94 1.4 Stalling when engine warm 9 Sep 2008 (Forum)
I have checked the air filter and spark plugs - all are fine. Would it be a carburetta problem or possibly a fuel filter? The car has been stood on a driveway for the past two months and not driven - would a good long journey at speed help, or maybe some Redex? Also the fan does not operate - any suggestions? Thanks Rosie50 -
Daewoo Lanos (1997 - 2002 ) - 1999 1.6 - Intermittant random engine fault 5 Sep 2008 (Forum)
But once turned off then given some time, when I start it again it runs smooth as. I have checked plugs, leads, injectors, fuel filter. the timing is spot on as I have double checked that too. The problem is with the car doing this only randomly I can not get other mechanics to see what it is doing wrong. Every time it does it I'm on my own.
