  • Considering a small automatic - what's out there? 26 Feb 2012 (Ask HJ)
I am due to retire in a couple of years and will be moving from a very rural location to, most probably, a large town or city. Both my wife and I drive...
  • Slipping S MAX clutch 1 Dec 2011 (Ask HJ)
Clutch appears to be slipping when carrying heavy loads (ie 7 people in car) and accelerating out of 3rd gear. The car, a Ford S-MAX, is only two years...
  • Should I pay to repair my Peugeot 106's indicator after a garage caused an electrical fault? 3 Sep 2010 (Ask HJ)
Last year my 1996 Peugeot 106's horn stopped working. It was fixed free of charge when having some other work done as it was just a loose wire. It stopped...
  • Will using a premium diesel help with my Mercedes-Benz E220's running problem? 23 Jul 2010 (Ask HJ)
My 2007 Mercedes-Benz E220 CDI with 49,000 miles sometimes used to feel like it was trying to lurch forward while moving at low speed, without any change...
  • Dirty old `soot ball juggling` diesel? - at 6.5yrs 16 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Bought new in 02, the plan was for ten plus years or so. But with DPF seeming to rule new diesels out for my wife`s sort of work - I`m looking at it differently. The same with the 2005,Euro 4 - but non DPF - Multijet Van. Perhaps DPF has been a `tipping point` where diesel cars made before that will be seen as similar to the `simple` cars of the 90`s?
  • DPF-Short trips-alternative solutions 14 Aug 2008 (Forum)
As Screwloose outlined yesterday. DPF and short trips don`t go well together. What`s the answer for those of us still running diesels without DPF? Hold on to the current car? even taking an approach that would see a major expense such as a new engine- or other several thousand pound repair- preferable to a new car with DPF?
  • Party Transport Policies 22 Apr 2005 (Forum)
This will also apply to police cars; their device will be set to 5 mph though built up areas. Traffic wardens will be re-named Dick Turpin because, let?s face it, it?s daylight robbery. Any kerbs that are caught crawling will be arrested and the council will be fined £100.000 pounds. Full Manifesto is at: http://omrlp.brinkster.net/Manicfesto2005.asp
  • Backroom Predictions for 2004 5 Jan 2004 (Forum)
New Year is a time for predictions. So here is my guess at the top threads we will see in 2004; with some typical posts. S**** C****** (yes, that\'s \"Safety Cameras\", which is on the swear filter for the simple reason that they are burger all to do with safety and everything to do with revenue - ND) The police should spend less time trying to catch burglars - after all they have to pay for their drug habit and rarely hurt people(the burglars that is) They should concentrate on speeding motorists who are responsible for thousands of casualties!
  • My RAC 225 dash cam is recording my speed incorrectly - is it a fault of the device? 2 Aug 2018 (Ask HJ)
I see that you have published a review of the RAC 225 S Super HD Dash Cam, but did you actually test it on the road? I purchased one of these and, at a...
  • Parking Firm Doctor Photo Evidence 2 Mar 2004 (Forum)
These are the very people who David Blunkett wants to dole out these new on-the-spot fines, but this shows they are not trustworthy.? NCP operates 600 car parks across the UK, including ten at the country?s busiest airports. Nicola Frost, the company?s communications manager, said: ?This matter is being investigated internally. I cannot make any kind of statement.? Bury council is also carrying out its own investigation.
  • Renault 5-Tech - First Drive 22 Feb 2025 (Forum)
I think it’s a design joy, with enough details to recall the original 5, but not so much to be a pastiche of the 1970’s classic. More impression to come in time.
  • What damage is ethanol causing in car engines ? 4 Mar 2024 (Forum)
It’s well known that the addition of ethanol in petrol used in garden machinery engines and classic motorcycles is damaging carburettor s and supply pipes to the extent they need replacing rather than servicing. Blocked jets and pipes that can’t be cleared by conventional means , even ultrasonics as it sets rock hard. Additives prove useless too I’m told .
  • Mazda 6 Skyactiv Petrol 9 Jan 2024 (Forum)
Only question is, how does the drive and performance of a naturally aspirated petrol compare to say s turbo charged petrols, or turbo diesels as they are all I've driven for near on twenty years? Also much to recommend between the 143 and 163 bhp versions? The latter seems hard to come by
  • used cars with light steering 21 Jul 2023 (Forum)
My wife suffers a from weak wrists. We are looking for a sub £4k coupe/convertible/hatchback car. She loves MX-5's but happy with any cute/stylish looking car BUT it must have very light steering. ..and thats the issue. Most of the older cars we have tried have quite heavy steering even if they have so called PAS No idea what people might suggest.. it will be fun !
  • Any - New driver rule 10 May 2023 (Forum)
They were talking about it before the pandemic but this news is from a few weeks ago - https://www.google.com/amp/s/news.sky.com/story/amp/new-drivers-under-25-could-face-young-passenger-ban-under-graduated-driving-licence-scheme-12864069 I just passed in Feb but I'm almost 40 so I don't think this applies to me but just wondering...
  • Mondeo - Worth a look? 23 Feb 2022 (Forum)
Inspired by the Jag S type thread (but down a notch or two) I've just noticed that a well respected local dealer has a 2004 Mondeo Ghia x 2.0 auto (petrol) for sale at £1750. 72k miles. No more info than that at present so can't check MOT history etc.
  • Vauxhall Chevette - Saw A Chevette 20 Feb 2022 (Forum)
Parked up on a drive near my sister in law's place. It was in really good condition "S" reg in an orage colour. This one had a boot. I would have though they would have all rusted to bits by now! I was quite surprised really I had one for a short time when I was 19. It leaked oil, had loads of white gunk under the oil cap and rusted easily.
  • Toyota Yaris Mk 1 - Best cheap small hatchback 25 Oct 2021 (Forum)
Just off to pick up DIL s Yaris auto after an mot and service. Its 22 years old and a Mk 1 built in Japan and it passed ok apart from a replacement wiper blade. These early examples are really amazing and must set the standard for a cheap sub £1000 first car.
  • Which cars have reliable air con systems 6 Aug 2020 (Forum)
Driving round with my windows down because my air con repair will cost twice as much as the car is worth I noticed how many cars are in the same position. The exception is my DIL s Yaris Y reg. But which makes and models have a good track record? As this repair is so expensive and expertise seems so difficult to find as its such a seasonal requirement.
