  • SEAT Leon Cupra - Opinions on MK 1 Seat Leon Cupra 25 Feb 2011 (Forum)
The main issue appears to be failing coil packs but since I'm buying a car with 100k miles can I assume they would have been fixed by now? Other than that, and not having great fuel economy (30-35mpg) and highish insurance, which is offset by a low purchase price and good reliability plus I dont do high miles, would this car make a sensible buy? I currently have a focus 1.8 mk1 petrol which is brilliant but I fancy a change after a having a focus tdci previously.
  • Honda Accord UK (2003 - 2008) - 04 2.2 Intermittent loss of power when acceleratin 23 Feb 2011 (Forum)
There's no problem in 1st gear, but occasionally in 2nd, and around 50% of the time in the higher gears, the car pinks at around 2,800-4,000 rpm. It feels as though the injector or fuel line is starving the engine of diesel for a split-second, similar to the effect of a faulty lumbar sensor. It makes the car jerk about 4-8 times, then it rectifies itself at around 4k rpm. (It's a similar sensation to hitting the brakes for a split-second when speeding up.)
  • Audi A4 B5 1.6 - poor mpg - anything i can do? 17 Jan 2011 (Forum)
Is there anything i can do to the car to ensure i get the best mpg engine wise, and aside from checking for fuel leaks? Many thanks.
  • Audi A4 B6 (2001 - 2005) - Audi A4 3.0 (petrol) - any advice? 10 Jan 2011 (Forum)
Presumably a bit flat at low revs but a lot more at the top end? What about reliability (I note CBCB mentions cracked engine blocks)? Real-world fuel consumption, compared with official figures? Is the ride harder than on a 1.9 tdi? I need to go and test drive one but thought I'd canvas some opinions first. Any advice appreciated..
  • All - Winter/Helping to avoid a flat battery 21 Dec 2010 (Forum)
I always try to give the car a decent run once a month at this time of year to help the battery have a good charge but I was wondering if I travelled in 4th gear rather than 6th this would assist the alternator to keep the battery charged (Greater engine speed). Yes there will be a slight increase in fuel usage but removing the risk of having a weak battery seems worth it. Any thoughts on whether any difference would be seen with such relatively short trips or am I completely wrong with the theory?
  • VOLKSWAGEN TRANSPORTER SWB MOTOR CARAVAN 1968cc - intermittent over-revving 18 Dec 2010 (Forum)
Other times I can drive 4 or 5 miles with no problem - no further.I told the garage about this at its recent yearly service /MOT and they have cleaned the throttle control and put some german fuel system cleaner in the petrol tank.It is no better. Please advise.
  • Renault Clio 2001 1.2 Dynamique - Can't start engine... immobiliser problem? 13 Dec 2010 (Forum)
Now it won't start. All warning lights are as normal. Car unlocks/locks ok with key fob. Fuel pump sounds ok. When you turn the ignition, it makes a repeating pattern of noises. Starter motor turns a few times and then there's a BUZZ sound. Repeat.  Any ideas? I've tried the spare key - no difference.
  • Peugeot 306 - Peugeot 306 - cutting out when dipping clutch 24 Sep 2010 (Forum)
what i have done: replaced coil/ignition pack (came up as misfires on plug in thing) replaced fuel filter replaced air filter checked all fuses replaced the exhaust manifold and lambda sensor today, no improvement this happens almost every time i clutch and brake for roundabouts or bends :( ive heard certain ECUs can spike and ruin that part... i think mine is one of them so heres a pic. p.s ICV has been cleaned out etc http://img127.imageshack.us/img127/868/12042010269.jpg
  • Volvo - Volvo B20 (engine from P1800?) 125/130hp...load of 2 Jul 2010 (Forum)
The other option I have is to change them for two other engines that I have - two 4litre, 6cylinder Jeep engines that have advantanges like more power, torque, electronic ignition and fuel injection. Thoughts on a postcard please!
  • Ford Focus - Motorway MPG 22 Jun 2010 (Forum)
As per the Which Car road test:- The figures for the 1.6 (100 bhp) is:- urban 31.7; extra-urban 52.3; combined 37.2; motorway 30.7 The figures for the 1.8 (125 bhp) is:- urban 29.1; extra-urban 47.9; combined 37.2; motorway 34 This indicates that the 1.8 gives better fuel economy in motorway driving. This would be because the engine has to work at a lower rpm to produce the same power / speed. But does this mean that one can expect even better mpg from the 2.0 engine on the motorway?
  • Fiat Brava SX80 1.2 16V - Fiat Brava power loss 22 May 2010 (Forum)
The car recently had a replacement engine fitted (second hand before I bought the car) the mechanic at the garage said everything was done that needed to be done so should be ok. I have changed the plugs and leads and also put an injector cleaning additive in the fuel, but the problem has not gone away. No warning lights come on to warn of anything wrong. Any advice.
  • Citroen Synergie - Synergie fault codes 27 Apr 2010 (Forum)
After having no problems whatsoever, out of the blue my 2000, 157000mile Citroen Synergie 1.9hdi failed to start. It was diagnosed as a fuel pump problem and it was replaced. Afterwards the idling was lumpy but the car went ok for about 30miles. It then died in mid journey but after switching the ignition off, it started again, drove ok but the engine management light came on.
  • Chrysler Voyager V6 1998 - Misfire 10 Apr 2010 (Forum)
It nows seems to be everytime we start from cold, although if we go on a longer journey of 1 hour or more, stop the car and leave it for an hour or so then start and drive after a while it will clear and run as normal. The fuel consumption with the misfire is half of when running normally. The garage have no idea, but one theory that I have is that the ecu (powertrain) and the ecu for the transmission, both sets of wires areopen to water/moisture.
  • Audi TT Coupe - Crankcase gas recirculation 4 Apr 2010 (Forum)
This seems to be more of a problem with direct injection engines - like those on modern Audis. The lack of fuel vapour into the inlet manifold means that a lot of the oil deposits are not washed away. It all beggars the question, why dont manufacturers build a filter into the system to catch the oil vapour?
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 00 1.4 Non Starter - Urgent help needed 4 Feb 2010 (Forum)
Following morning car refused to start again. AA called and replaced battery and multi function relay. All system was checked ie. fuel injectors, fuses etc..... still will not start. The momentum there but just doesn't seem to have the spark to do so. Booked in to a local garage tomorrow and desperate to know if anyone has had a similar problem and what was the solution.
  • Ford Fiesta (1989 - 1995) - 94 1.3 New sparks but still stalling 4 Feb 2010 (Forum)
The engine sounds fine other than this. Could it be the idle control valve or something wrong with the fuel injection? Any advice much appreciated.
  • Why did some companies use Dizzy's until recently? 4 Feb 2010 (Forum)
All my bangers have always had electronic ignition and all the Fords I have ever known have had it (I was too young to do anything under the bonnet of Cortinas etc) but some Vauxhalls and Rover still used the dizzy's until fairly recently even with proper fuel injection. The system seems really old fashioned to me, my ten year old car dosn't even have HT leads there is no need for them. So why did some cars still use this silly old fashioned system called Dizzy?
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 02 1.8TDCI Kangarooing!! 3 Feb 2010 (Forum)
I presume it is this reason why the car is experincing the issues. Could it be the engine collant temperature sensor? Something simple as the fuel filter? Main dealer are asking for rather alot money just to plug it in! Answers greatly appreciated.
  • Volkswagen Golf III (1992 - 1997) - 94 1.8 Persistant missfire 12 Dec 2009 (Forum)
A week later The missfire is back ,so i replaced the dizzy cap ,no difference ,i swaped leads and plugs with a known good set ,still missfireing . The strange thing is i can watch the injector (single point )pulse extra fuel when it missfires at idle ,but cant see if this is a cause or the result of the missfire .It happens too fast. ???
  • Mercedes Benz C-Class Sport Coupe (2001 - 2008) - 03 Sport Coupe or 03 320 Ci SE? 30 Nov 2009 (Forum)
Been looking at either a 2003 C-Class Sport Coupe with 30k miles and a 2003 320 Ci SE with 16k miles. Reading the road-tests - the Merc is better on the fuel but otherwise there's little in it at all. I cover approx 400 miles/week - almost all of which are on the motorway. I'm more than happy just to sit at 70. Reckon the Merc will be available £750 less than the BMW but all in - both cars are immaculate with mature previous owners.
