  • Reliable and fun to drive for £4k? 23 Oct 2003 (Forum)
At the ripe old age of 39 I have never bought a car other than from a family member so I'd also appreciate any views on whether it's worth paying main dealer premium or would I be better off going for a private seller or independent dealer then buying a warranty from Warranty Direct.
  • Advice Please... 21 Sep 2003 (Forum)
About 6 months ago I purchased an approved used vehicle from a main dealer. The car was about 15 months old with 1 previous local owner who had traded it in for another of the same model. The car in my opinion was immaculate and the fact that it had only covered 6k miles made my mind up and I duly proceeded with the purchase.
  • What car to insure with my student loan! 7 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Anyway i have decided to give moving away from home, where i get everything done for me for free, a miss. Instead the student loan money is going to go on insuring a cool car for myself. I currently have a 98 Punto Sporting which i have had since November 2001. This has been a great first car. It is insured in my old mans name to keep the costs down. However when i turn 20 in November i'm going to get a new car and insure it in my own name.
  • How to get rid of kids 28 Mar 2003 (Forum)
They were back again tonight, blatantly kicking the ball off cars. I asked them to move and was rewarded with a threat to start hitting my car with their skateboards instead. Does anyone have any suggestions how to stop this damage? My new car hasn't currently got any dents, but the old Tipo had quite a few by the time I pensioned it off from footballs and whatnot.
  • Writeoff 27 Jan 2003 (Forum)
As you may have read in the tailgaiting thread, my mate's Mondeo was hit from the rear by a van on Wednesday night, which also managed to push him into the van in front (who proceeded to naff off after the accident without giving details) He's been told today that the car is very close to been a write-off and could well yet turn out to be one once the estimate is calculated. BUT, the car is in *very* good condition, it's only had 1 former keeper who was an old bloke who serviced it at the Ford dealers religously.
  • Audi a1 sport or Ford Fiesta Ecoboost s line - Can’t decide what car to get need help 1 Feb 2020 (Forum)
Anyhow. My issues with the Audi. The inside is crap. The screen looks like an old Nokia 3310 quality. It’s so so small, 3 doors and I get so stressed when people Get in the back in case they scratch the paint lol. My friends asked me why such a gorgeous car was so old fashioned inside with the knobs and stuff lol.
  • Volvo XC90 (2002 - ) - Sold the Outback! 2 Feb 2010 (Forum)
The Japanese (Shogun, Landcruiser, Navarra etc) were good value but after an Outback rather basic inside, slow and uneconomical and I wanted the appeal of a comfortable car. So Volvo it was. There are a lot for sale, but I really want in-built SatNav and the Winter Pack so it reduced my choice somewhat. Eventually I found what appears to be the ideal car. I decided that I would be better off looking for a young high mileage specimen rather than a five year old school run car.
  • Any - 'Used Approved' 28 Feb 2020 (Forum)
When I bought a three year old used car last month - after much research - there's no doubt that I was heavily influenced by the 'Used Approved' classification.Pay more but have peace of mind.  Not only by recommendations here, but also by their advertising, eg: "With The xxx Approved Used Car Promise, you can be sure that whatever car you drive away in, it has been checked, checked and checked again to meet the high standards xxx demands from all of its vehicles.
  • Hyundai Getz - Cheap To Run Small Car Up To 3K? 14 Mar 2012 (Forum)
My parents gave me a low mileage Focus 1.6 automatic to replace my 16 year old K11 Micra as a second car.  The car is great it is lovely to drive but is too thirsty and costs £245 a year to tax.  I have decided to sell it and add some towards it to buy a cheap to run small petrol car.

  • Ford fiesta - Can you be done twice for having no tax 2 Apr 2020 (Forum)
Long story short, I failed to update my v5 when I moved house a couple of years ago and only realised last year when I recieved a fine through the post for 80 pounds from a different debt agency saying that I’d not got any valid car tax(I pay 30pounds a year and normally just wait for the reminder to come through) but because I’d not updated my v5(I had updated my driving license) and stupidly forgot to do so I paid the fine and went to the post office to buy a new v5 as I couldn’t find my old one and to pay a years tax at the same time.

  • Any - Cheap way improve fuel economy by 10% ? 24 Sep 2014 (Forum)
I have developed and tested a simple method of imrpoving the overall fuel economy of my 1248 cc, NA supermini by around 5 mpg (10%) from 49 mpg to 54 mpg - based on careful 'brim to brim' measurements and meticulous petrol logs kept since purcasing the car from new over a 3 year period. The 'benefit' was also demonstrated, albeit with a milder version, on my 8 year old, 100 kg heavier, 5 door hatchback (improving from 38 mpg to 43 mpg) running from 85,000 to 100,000 miles before part exchanging it for the new car in Sept 2011.
  • Buying a car. Can you help with the 3Ws and H? 16 Nov 2009 (Forum)
Not fond of smaller 4x4s either. When should I buy it? I've been scouring the market for a decent secondhand buy (up to 3 years old/40k miles) since the summer but prices appear to have got carried away. I can't afford to buy another Disco 3 and why would I buy say an out of warranty 3 year old Volvo XC90 for 85% of the price of a deeply discounted new one?
  • Vauxhall Vectra C (2002 - 2008) - My Vectra is no more. 13 Aug 2007 (Forum)
The bodyshop reckoned you were a Cat B write off, but obviously the insurance assessor knows better. Out of the handful of cars I've owned over the past 20 years, you were the most reliable and comfy car I've ever had. Should you ever rise again from the scrapyard, may you serve your new master with the same reliability and comfort that you had served me.
  • Skoda rapid - 2 years / 20k miles in a Rapid (HB) 29 Mar 2016 (Forum)
It was by no means a car I took any pleasure from driving, but as a simple (and relatively cheap) mode of transport, it more than exceeded my expectations. The initial purchase cost (the Rapid was 1 year old / 10K miles) was similar to a new Citigo.
  • NEVS 9-3 is up for testing! - Saab 27 Feb 2014 (Forum)
The engine is strong at low revs and have a nice torque, but it’s not the most fuel-efficient car on the market. AMS think the car have a old infotainment system, and it’s missing the latest safety systems as brake-assist, sleep-warning, lane-warning and so on. So if we sum up what the Swedish car-magazines think about the 2014 9-3; The 9-3 still have a great chassis and a very nice engine.
  • Renault Clio - Best place to sell, Any tips 18 Sep 2025 (Forum)
I would imagine that local car dealers may offer what we buy any car are offering.  I just wonder if the members here have any advice on selling cars to get the best price  or just go for a trade in and save all the hassle.
