Volkswagen Bora - Reason for water temp gauge fluctuation? 30 Mar 2010 (Forum)
Today noticed that when heater was turned up to max and fan switched on that water temp gauge fell from normal position to lower quarter. Car idles well, fuel economy as before and does not require top ups of coolant. Did put VAG-COM on and got a message for intermittent engine coolant temp sensor. Could it be as simple as replace this sensor ?? -

'93 Polo. Coolant leak? 17 Oct 2005 (Forum)
About a month ago, I had the Polo (see profile for specifics) in for a service, part of which was a coolant change. When I got back, and a few journeys later (no more than 100 miles) I checked the fluids over, and the coolant level was low. It was about .5 inch under the minimum, so without delay, I added some water and it took no more than 300ml to replenish the level to 'max'. -
Corsa C 1.2 SXI+ - Instant gasket + Bars Leak blocking cooling system 9 Mar 2019 (Forum)
It also won't hold higher revs upto 1400-1500, I suspect EGR as when I unplug it nothing changes apart from the "spanner" light coming on. EGR is influenced by coolant and when I removed the water pump the channel that recieves coolant from the heater matrix was dry and pink. The EGR also "pops" about 30 seconds after startup so could be knackered. When I removed the water pump there was massive amounts of excess Instant Gasket around the joints with the timing cover and I could some had broken of. -
Toyota RAV4 - Repair woes! 12 Jul 2013 (Forum)
Car returned a week last Tuesday. After a week, I noticed coolant from blow-off valve on coolant tank. Coolant level fell to about 10mm below minimum mark, but still quite high. Car is back with them having it sorted. Now even I know that #5 isn't a leak issue and must be caused by pressure i.e. gasket problem. -
Hyundai i20 - Reduced mpg 26 Dec 2021 (Forum)
I filled some petrol last week and on the MPG reading was going down and down and down as low as 10 miles to the gallon (I've never seen it that low) which spooked me, it has increased to high 20s since but still not great The only thing I've noticed is the bottom coolant hose is cold even after a long run, whereas the top hose is warm, is this normal? From what I can research the thermostat is coming from the bottom hose into the engine, so I'm thinking maybe by the thermostat is open or is not fully closed therfore warm coolant is not staying in the bottom hose and the colder coolant coming from the radiator is entering the engine and reducing mpg -
Ford Fiesta Mk4 1.25 16V 1999 - Coolant temperature sensor / gauge 20 Aug 2018 (Forum)
I dismantled the instrument binnacle and tested the moving coil gauge separately and that's all working OK. So unless there's another coolant sensor I can't see I assume the sender unit connects to the ECU which has a relay output to control the radiator cooling fan and a signal output to drive the gauge. If I'm correct then either there's a wiring fault or the ECU is faulty. -
Hyundai Getz 1.1 year 2007 - Hyundai getz radiator fan not working 6 Jun 2017 (Forum)
With ignition on I've swapped the two 30A fuse links between fan and blower and its not that. I've bridged RAD1 and RAD 2 relays and the fan runs. I've disconnected the coolant temp switch and the fan runs. Are there enough clues above for someone to offer some advise on how to proceed further as I desperately need this car on the road for my wife. The coolant switch has 4 wires. the car doesnt have a temp gauge only a blue bulb sign on the dash that goes out when engine is warmed up. -
Ford Focus Estate 1.8 Petrol - Coolant temperature 7 Jun 2013 (Forum)
There are no other indications so far of a problem but it is overdue for a service. According to the ECU the coolant temperature was 106C. If these engines run hot as I get the impression that they were designed to do then I guess this isn't a problem. So first question to ask is should a 1.8 Zetec Petrol (2002) be running at 106C after 30 minutes of driving? -
Skoda Fabia - 02 Fabia Brake Lights & Other Electrics 29 Apr 2013 (Forum)
Car has been running reliably since new, but recently we had have the head off, skimmed & replaced, together with a new coolant tank. Since then there have been two problems: 1) The coolant warning alarm goes off when it is first driven, but not on subsequent trips once warmed up. Since the transducer is part of the new coolant tank it should be ok. -
Citroen C2 - A temporary fix needed to keep a damn car going 8 Oct 2012 (Forum)
Unfortunately the head gasket is on the way out. To keep the car going, at the end of each journey I have to loosen the coolant cap until it goes "SSSSSSSS" (taking care not to lose my hand) so that the pressure doesn't force the coolant into the cylinders. If I don't do this, the car won't even turn over next time without trying it about a million times. -
Vauxhall Astra G Petrol 1.6 - 'Using' coolant... normal? 30 Jan 2011 (Forum)
It seemed to tick all the right boxes: FSH including cambelt, good body, 120k, newish brakes and tyres, drives and sounds just like new, £900. So far so good. But the very decent seeming seller volunteered that the car 'uses' a little coolant (but with no sign of any leak) but that his mechanic had told him this was normal for an Astra. I'm just slightly worried about this water 'use'. Perhaps I'm barking entirely up the wrong tree here (I really know very little about cars...) but I'm wondering if the head gasket could be just starting to fail? -
Renault Kangoo Van - Cooant levels 29 Nov 2010 (Forum)
Recently my Kangoo started over heating on a long journey. I managed to get home, and next day checked the coolant level which was below the min mark, so I bought some coolant and filled up. However, two days later, I checked the level again and it was again below the min mark, so, bought some more coolant and refilled. -
Vauxhall Astra F - Overheating issue, running out of ideas 9 Aug 2010 (Forum)
Having been a cold running engine for all these years, 3 weeks ago out of the blue, just overheated and spat its coolant all over the engine bay. Topped up coolant and it's not lost a drop since, so no leaks. But it's been running really hot ever since. Short -wired fan so on constantly, but was barely keeping the temp down. -
Ford Mondeo II (1996 - 2000) - 99 2.0 coolant temp fluctuations - normal? 30 Nov 2009 (Forum)
On the way home (warmer air temp, mostly uphill) the temp gauge appears normal but if I put the heater on full I can make the needle drop back out of the zone. Is it normal for the cabin heater to make this much difference to the engine coolant temp? (I've heard of mini drivers using the heater matrix as an extra radiator in summer traffic jams to stop the engine overheating - but I would have thought my mondeo would have more in reserve than this!) -
Ford Focus III (2008 - ) - 08 1.6 Coolant Loss/Use 5 Nov 2009 (Forum)
I had some trouble with this about six months ago as the car was using/loosing coolant, it went to dealers no problem found, all topped up and was fine. Since then the car has been fine on all the trips even long runs down the motorway. Now the other day we went out and drove about 7 miles stopped and I noticed the cooling fan had come on, had a look and the expansion tank is empty.
