  • Ford - 1.0 litre destined for Focus & possibly Mondeo 29 Jan 2012 (Forum)
Engineers have also combined the exhaust manifold with the cylinder head casting, so the temperature of the exhaust gas inside it is reduced by around 100°C thanks to the engine’s cooling system. As a result, enrichment of the fuel-air mixture when the engine is working at its hardest becomes unnecessary and that reduces fuel consumption. The engine also makes do with a simple yet advanced design of turbocharger, has twin variable camshaft timing, uses low friction coatings on some internal components to save more energy and the crank is offset slightly to align more efficiently with the pistons’ connecting rods.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 04 2.0 TDCI 115: Flashing glow plug light 2 Jun 2009 (Forum)
From what I've read the possible causes could be (starting with cheapest option) Camshaft sensor Crankshaft sensor Pressure sensor on fuel pump Fuel filter and fuel gauge sender unit ECU recalibration and recoding injector EGR valve Reconditioning injectors New Injectors So starting with the cheapest option first I've replaced the cam shaft sensor (which is what the AA man did) and reset the ECU and no change.
  • Replacement car suggestions 21 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Clearly this kind of usage is not going to sit well with a fairly highly-tuned car that?s already done a lot of miles. Also there?s the fuel economy issue - I have averaged 28mpg since starting the new job - not bad for a 200bhp car, and I get a very good rate for mileage, but I can?t help thinking that I would be substantially better off with a more economical car.

  • Ford Focus Estate - 1.0 Ecoboost vs 1.6 TDCI 29 Feb 2024 (Forum)
Which would be the safer bet for reliabilty and potential repair costs, the ecoboost or the TDCI? The TDCI would save me slightly more in fuel, but obviously introduced a DPF which is a big potential drawback over the ecoboost. Thanks for any help, all opinions welcome and appreciated.
  • TUD5 VZJ problem with CAV pump ?? - Toro mower with TUD5 ( saxo \ 106 ) low torque 29 May 2021 (Forum)
I am sure that the pump is not set correctly. Is there an easy way to increase the output pressure ( more fuel ) with these old CAV DPC type pumps or is it back to the specialist. ? I found that if limited a little the return flow from the pump to the fuel tank it will rev up to 2650 and run perfectly under load but i am scared the this will push out a seal as there is defiantly too much pressure in the casing.
  • Not yet sure - New Purchase 10 Mar 2021 (Forum)
I want to have something that is shifty, but also reliable and relatively decent on fuel as my Nismo RS does about 33MPG on a good day! I have three options currently with I'd say up to £18,000 to play around with.  Option one is a 2014 onwards Audi Q5, 2 litre diesel S-Line plus.
  • 2004 Astra G 1.7 CDTI 80ps - Astra 1.7 CDTI Starting Troubles 4 May 2015 (Forum)
Hi right its my mates 2004 astra G 1.7 CDTI 80ps Problem is it wont start on the key starts fine with a bump start or i'm guessing with easy start also altho i haven't tried this yet. Fuel filter and air filter have been changed and made no difference When running there is a bit of a knocking noise when cold, sounds a bit like an injector knocking altho this is alot quieter when the engine has warmed up a bit.
  • E46 330D Touring 2001 - E46 330D Touring spluttered to a halt and now will 12 Apr 2013 (Forum)
Bought a 2001 E46 while back with swirl flap damage and managed to lay my hands on a engine that we swapped over Christmas last year All went in well started up and has run well ever since until last Monday Suddenly whilst driving noticed managment light was on and went into limp mode then just spluttered to a halt and has refused to start since Had fault codes read with Snapon ethos and comes up with the same faults P1640 Internal Control Module (ROM/RAM) Error and P3505 glow plugs i know the glow plugs are not happy and had planned to change them in the near future but car had not had any starting problems even in all the cold weather Also i have changed Crank sensor cam sensor map sensor Air flow meter Fuel rail pressure sensor Low pressure pump is making 4 bar pressure according to the Snapon Ethos diagnostics but only give high pressure fuel reading as 35% now 35% of what im not sure would of been better in bar or PSI would have ment a lot more to me.
  • Recommendations for BIG but economical estate pls. 7 Jan 2011 (Forum)
Hi all.  Currently have a 58-reg 2.2 Tdci S-Max.  I can't afford the finance (or fuel, to be honest) on it any more due to job circumstances so I'm selling it, paying off the finances and getting something cheaper to run for a while. I work from home so do very few miles at present.
  • Peugeot 306 - small list of problems..... 7 Sep 2010 (Forum)
when i turn off the engine i can turn off the ignition remove the key and the engine will continue to run for a few seconds. On a short trip the car wont be affected as much. i am thinking prehaps fuel pump not shutting off fuel or something to do with the idle?  And lastly the steering wheel is off center although the tracking is fine. Take the steering wheel off?  Thank you for taking the time to read this
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 97 1.9D Hard to start, then almost total fail to s 5 Aug 2008 (Forum)
To get him going I told him to turn on the key (which opens the stop solenoid) and hand prime the engine with the squeeze bowl. This worked and it started. He did say he had wet hands from fuel leaking from somewhere so I told him he needs to check that he does not have a leaking fuel line which would bleed air into the system. He said that the car puffed black smoke during cranking and when it finally started it gave out some more black smoke.
  • Carbon quotas - road and air travel 6 Sep 2006 (Forum)
One assumes so, perhaps not a bad thing beacuse it drives home the cost and effect of energy use. Is paying for a carbon quota fairer than fuel tax, variable RFL and BiK etc? If so is a 10 mile commute in a 10mpg V12 Jagcedes as acceptable as a 50 mile commute in a 50mpg Skogeot or should we have a responsibility to reduce our need to travel as well as the means of travel?
  • The Beetle mystery 7 Jun 2001 (Forum)
We had that car in time after time, did everything to cure it. VW even flew over a valve to go in the fuel line from the tank at the front to the engine at the rear to prevent the petrol siphoning when it was standing into the carb and flooding." "Surely I said the obvious place to look would be the fuel pump which sits on the top of the flat four engine sump."
  • Buying Advice - £5K 22 Jul 2025 (Forum)
The main features I’m looking for are; Comfortable for motorway driving. Space for family (and can handle 2 kids and all their stuff); Fuel Efficiency (as much as possible). Reliability & Simplicity. Preferably; Decent bit of oomph when required. A bit more tech than my Focus (2011 radio feels quite dated now). Manual gearbox. Thanks!
  • Recommend me a used car 1 Jun 2025 (Forum)
Requirements:  - large enough to fit 4 people and boot space for suitcases and a dog - enough torque for swift driving & comfortable for motorway cruising - cheap to maintain (insurance group, road tax, fuel efficient) - max budget 15K, but ideally below 14K, and up to 5 years old...? Current car has been great - averaged 48mpg, zero road tax, spacious and a good engine with plenty of power.
  • Will there be any more good cars? 23 Dec 2024 (Forum)
It's 20% heavier, uglier, and bigger in every dimension, but feels cramped on the inside. It's also slower and uses more fuel ?? Is this the end of the road for good cars? I'm not touching an electric one until I feel confident that it won't burn my house down.
  • VW Polo - 9N3/MK4 polo question 1 Feb 2024 (Forum)
Is it a torque converter type, an earlier version of the DSG or the exact same DSG gearbox they used in the later MK5 polo? And is this generation of transmission as reliable as the MK5 DSG and more fuel efficient than the traditional torque converter type used in the 2006 models? Edit: this is not the car I’m actually purchasing but I have attached an advert of the exact model I’m talking about as an example.
  • Peugeot 607 - Peugeot 607 failed MOT because of no DPF! 27 Jul 2023 (Forum)
The dealer man said that is sure the car year doesn't have DPF as standard. He said he will ask one of his mechanical to look under the fuel tank to see if there is elyon tank (I don't know what this is) he confirmed this car doesn't have DPF.   Do I find info like on my V5 or Tax check online for to see if my is register to have DPF?
  • Audi a4 tdi - Shake on accerlating 15 May 2022 (Forum)
The shake seems to be able to be controlled with the throttle, doesn't seem to come through the steering wheel  I have had it checked over by a reputable mechanic and he could not see anything wrong in terms of cv joints etc. He also done some road tests measuring fuel and boost pressure but all appeared normal. One thing he did say was the clutch appeared to be that of what you would expect with the miles but said there was no apparent flywheel or release bearing noise.
