Please help me choose a car ! 25 Jan 2025 (Forum)
Hi. I'm a terrible procrastinator and c******d with indecision. I've been looking to replace my old Civic for two years now and still can't... -
Hyundai i20 - Messy key situation 7 Oct 2024 (Forum)
There are videos on retumbling ignition locks - could I (or a locksmith) not just retumble the new lock to the old key? What would have been the correct way to have done this - would Hyundai have to have been involved, or can car locksmiths do it? And secondly, if we can get the original key reinstated, can a car locksmith reprogramme/clone the original to the new key, or is that dealer only? -
Ford Mondeo Estate TDdi - Fuel leak 24 Aug 2021 (Forum)
Not so much of a leak but I am struggling having replaced a lift pump which sits under the car below the fuel tank. When I removed the existing pump and disconnect the fuel line into the pump, it was dry, no diesel came gushing out, which was good (given I have a full tank of fuel). Having installed the new pump I noticed a leak when I started up the car. -
SEAT Leon ST - Honda Civic or Seat Leon 17 Aug 2020 (Forum)
My main concern is that the electronics might play up, and this might be one area where Seat is weaker than other VAG cars. But even Hondas aren't perfect in this respect when they get old. Any thoughts? -
In general - Diesels 12 Feb 2020 (Forum)
The one thing I'd like to ask is I have just read an article on the rac website about dpf and it mentions how long they should last and cost to fix and the way I see it a dpf 100k miles, replace at a cost of 1k on some cars 100k mile means a new cam belt and around that mileage ish a new clutch all on the ish ,but if all this comes in or around the ish you could end up with a lot of expensive repairs , so to my mind a diesel with around 100k on average 10 years old could end up costing alot to keep running beyond the 100k mark. -
Honda CR-V 2001 - Auto gearbox 'rumble' 5 Mar 2019 (Forum)
It also seems loudest at low revs..up to about 2000. Its at its loudest when pulling away or under load. Obviously as its an old car I don't really want to shell out a grand + On a gearbox repair as it essentially writes the thing off. Do love my car though so if there are any suggestions as to what it might specifically be, or indeed of its common and 'normal' then all gratefully received! -
Focus 2004 - 1.8tdci (115) - Glow Plugs Flashing / Low Power 31 Jan 2018 (Forum)
When you switch the engine off and back on it starts and everything seems ok !! Could this be the EGR ?? What would anyone recommend as its a lovely car but cant keep replacing parts with it being this old ! Thanks in advance !! -
1.6tdi SE DSG - 68k mileage - VW Golf Servicing 25 Sep 2017 (Forum)
Since buying may car at 10k - one year old. I had a VW serive package (waste of money). I had persisted on an intermediate oil change between VW long life service. On average its had oil change every 6K with oil to VW spec (Quantum 5w30). -
3 or 5 series - BMW 7 Aug 2016 (Forum)
If not, would someone please tell me and I'll happily move it. Over the last decade or so I've had three charisma-free if fairly reliable cars on the bounce: Primera, Meriva and currently a Focus. I've had the Focus for about six years, so its time for a change. As opposed to my original plan, being to buy a newish Fiesta which would have cost about 8k from a dealer, I'm now thinking of going for a 3 or 5 series BMW around ten years old. -
Mk7 Golf 1.4 (122) TSI - Golf confusion 28 Jul 2016 (Forum)
Hi After much deliberation I'm inclined to see the Mk7 Golf 1.4 TSI (122) in SE Spec as our ideal next car (2-3 years old....belt cam I'm guessing?). The only problem seems to be contradictory/confusing information re the performance of this engine. Some sites (i.e. all the Autotrader and some of the garage ads) list it as 0-60 in 11.0 seconds with a top speed of 108mph. -
GOLF TDI Bluemotion - Misfuel 3 Dec 2015 (Forum)
I got towed to the dealership where i purchased the car and they have said the main fuel pump is broken which has affected the leads and sensors?? Anyway they are saying this can be caused by a misfuel, putting unleaded into a diesel. I can 110% state i have not done this and i had done about 225 miles from a full tank before the car failed. -
skoda superb 1.9tdi pd130 - manual gear selector 11 Apr 2015 (Forum)
Having received sound advice previously, here I am again in need of some guidance. My trusty 192K, 10 year old chariot has been the best car I have had, by miles.... Recently it has been proving difficult to engage the gear stick. First is a problem when stationary, third to fourth when moving. Fourth to third is very hard when moving. -
Peugeot Dealer 25 Mar 2015 (Forum)
When I got home I checked on Peugeots site, the 308 SW is still on and you can still configure the car. So I rang the next closest dealer, he said it had not been discontinued and they were expecting more stock cars in during the next few days, even the sales manager drives one. So who is having a laugh. -
Ford Mondeo - Buying petrol mondeo 2007 onward Potential issues? 10 Dec 2014 (Forum)
Evening all, I recently had a ford focus 1.6 diesel which is now about to be written off due to a nonfault crash. I'm looking at really upgrading from my 10 year old focus to a newer Mondeo. What do I need to know/ask? The reason I'm concerned is that I was stung by needing a new turbo in the focus which (I was told on here) is a relatively common issue with those cars. -
Audi A4 B7 (2005 - 2008) - 2007 - Possible Suspension Problem 25 Sep 2014 (Forum)
I have a 10 month old A4 and think that I may have a developing suspension problem. My car has a tendency to follow ruts and inconsistencies on rougher roads much more than it used to, making the steering sometimes 'snatchy' when driving on country lanes that are a bit rough. -
2003 nissan almera - starting problem 26 Jul 2014 (Forum)
I've been told its the tensioner on the timing chain and it will cost 800-900 to replace but probably is not worth spending that much due to the age of car and another couple of garages do not want to know. I have been reading some old reviews that seem to have the same problem. Do you think it could be the timing chain? -
Audi A4 TDI 143 S Line 2008 onwards - buying advice 4 Jul 2014 (Forum)
Hi John I am keen on getting a Audi a4 s line 2008 onwards tdi model. looking to spend 10k I have seen many examples on trader and elsewhere...couple of concerns hope someone can answer when exactly does the cam belt, tensioners and water pump need changing on this car ? mileage wise Are there any DPF issues I should be aware of ? some of these cars seem like spaceships 4 year old models with 150,000+ miles on the clock, suspect they are sales people driving these up and down the country is these anything specific I should be looking out for ? -
Mazda MX5 - Battery failures 26 Mar 2014 (Forum)
Bought a 3 month old MX5 from a franchised dealer on 31/12/13, only 65 miles on clock, allegedly a demo car. Every 2 weeks it fails to start and battery is dead. Been in local Mazda dealers for a total of 5 weeks out of the 11 weeks i have owned it, it has had 3 batteries and the latest one has just failed again. -
Honda Accord Saloon 2007 - Honda Accord - Rear Brake Wear 21 Jan 2014 (Forum)
My previous Accord (a 2005 model) had no such problems in the 50K miles that I drove with it. Otherwise the car is excellent but I am not looking forward to another £250 bill in about 18 months time -
Astra 2.2 Sri - 2001 - Won't Start 22 Nov 2013 (Forum)
Until last month I did a couple of 150 mile round trips over three days and the car started playing up again as if the EGR was chocked so I thought it was the EGR. I left the car sitting for 2 weeks until I could get someone to round to clean it again but when we went to start it wouldn’t turn over.
