  • BMW Styling 3 Jan 2005 (Forum)
I've also noticed through reading the forums that a lot of you seem to hate drivers of Beemers - why is this? Haha I'm just interested in the thoughts of motorists! I drive a Ford Ka and a Vauxhall Corsa which is my instructors car - talking of 'image' what sort of person does it make you if you drive these? Cheers!
  • U.S. driver - U.K. Insurance? 8 Oct 2004 (Forum)
from my insurance company on this one - so the natural recourse is to the collective wisdom of the backroom. My American girlfriend (full U.S. license, insured to drive her own car in the U.S.A. etc etc)would like to drive when she visits the UK and I'd be perfectly happy for her to use my car. My insurance company says they won't cover her and implied they didn't think anyone else would, either.
  • Emergency spare wheels 19 Aug 2004 (Forum)
I was reading HJ column in today's Telegraph and there is a letter from someone who had his driving test cancelled because the car he was taking the test in was fitted with a skinny spare following a puncture the previous day. Whilst not wanting to upstage HJ the response he gave was incorrect, but of more concern was the fact that the driving instructor didn't know the law on skinny spares.
  • Where cops drive Lamborghinis 19 May 2004 (Forum)
The sports car, painted in the police's distinctive blue and white colors, comes complete with a flashing blue light on the roof and will initially patrol the Salerno-Reggio Calabria motorway -- a road notorious in Italy for wild driving. The Lamborghini will also be used to transport human organs for emergency operations.
  • Part-ex and test-driving 27 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Would probably cost £400 to sort out but success of repairs not garanteed. The car worth is worth £2000 tops (if in tip-top condition). Anyway, do dealers usually test drive your part-ex ? I'm asking because I know of 2 people who got a decent price for their part-exes without the dealer even opening the bonnet. Also, if the car you intend to buy is already heavily discounted (10% on list price) with extras, is it worth bargaining hard for an extra discount or is there absolutely no point ?
  • Loss of licence insurance 17 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Has anyone any experience of insuring themselves against loss of their driving licence? I see there are one or two companies on the internet offering these services. Reason I ask is that I have a friend (not me honest!) who drives for a living and now has 6 points. Now has 3 years to go without getting another six.
  • wot, another omega question! 28 Sep 2003 (Forum)
My local garage says wider tyres (mine are 225s) are more susceptable (is that spelt right?) to this. When I was driving in France the other week the effect was (almost) unnoticeable. Driving on the right meant the camber was the opposite way so perhaps that is the answer. Has anyone got a full answer? Regards Scotty
  • Replacement for Driving Instructor Car 24 Sep 2003 (Forum)
My dad has been a driving instructor for about 15 years and has always had Fiesta diesels. His last one has been more of a problem than the others (X reg Flight - old shape), so he is looking at alternatives. Requirements: Diesel Less than £10k to buy brand new a/c Dark interior Reasonable servicing and spare parts cost Height adjustable drivers seat He\'s looked at Yaris, but must buy a T3 spirit (?)
  • Automatic Gate Opener 6 Jun 2003 (Forum)
I converted my garage door to a remote automatic system and now fancy having a go at the twin wrought iron gates at the end of my drive. I am not concerned about the security aspects as any unwelcome visitor could easily avoid the machine gun posts with their automatic line of sight firing. I want the convenience of not having to get out of car - open gates - get in and drive through - get out and close gates - get back in car and drive off.
  • Focus not so good 6 May 2003 (Forum)
The LX is soggy, the brakes seem terrible, the gear change seems lumpy and heavy, the handling is for peanuts and the inside is naaaasty Add to that the tractor type sound effects and you have a car that is very, very average. I would rather drive the Astra DTI van we have, better handling, far superior engine and nicer to drive all round.
  • Too many bhp 10 Jan 2003 (Forum)
Was there anything I could have done once the slide had started? What caused the snaking? I'm now scared stiff of driving anything with more than 95 bhp!!!
  • Dealing with floods 6 Jan 2003 (Forum)
After swimming my way into work today, office discussion on dealing with floods has just started. I would appreciate if anybody can add to my knowledge (or lack of it!) on the subject. I drive a diesel. My tactic for driving through floods is to stick it in 2nd and drive straight through at a moderate speed and revs. My colleague assures me that I am doing it all wrong and what I should do is bung it in 1st, rev up to above 3000rpm and slip the clutch all the way through to keep the speed down.
  • what lane 1 for? 4 Sep 2002 (Forum)
I read in the paper that there are plans to have 12 lane stretches of the M25 - what's the point when 10 of the lanes will be empty! Unless the driving test has changed, there should definitly include m-way driving as part of the test. Even SWMBO gets animated seeing people stuck in the wrong lane and quite rightly thinks that the government should do something about it.
  • Tony Pond 10 Feb 2002 (Forum)
I don't know how many of you are old gits like me and will remember him, but I have just been very saddened to hear the news that Tony Pond passed away on Thursday night from Pancreatic Cancer. I remember some of his storming drives like the 1977 RAC when he was lying second in a TR7 until the darn thing fell apart under him. He also had some amazing drives on the Manx International Rally. In 1978 he won driving a TR7V8 that was truly awesome to watch and probably most impressive in 1984 came second overall in a production SD1 Rover.
  • "I don't beleeeve it" 21 Dec 2001 (Forum)
So by way of a diversion ... as I shall turn 40 over the Xmas break, can the backroomers tell me: a: Where I can find suitable pair of driving slippers, best brand?, a la DW. b: The info which I need to read to show me how to adjust my driving style commensurate with age. c: A flat cap (or should that be trilby?) d: A club badge for the grille (and which club?)
  • Toyota Prius Import - Euro Status 10 Jan 2025 (Forum)
I am looking at a used Prius import from a garage but it doesn't flag up on any of the .gov or TFL webpages with a validated Euro class status. Does this mean that I will get pinged if I drive into a clean air zone? I like the look of the car but if it might be an issue for driving into the city' Thanks in Advance

  • Painful Ankle Joints 11 Jun 2022 (Forum)
Ok, I am getting old. I find my ankle joints are getting stiff and hurt when driving over 30 minutes, especially when using the accelerator pedal. I do tend to use cruise control as a substitute but it's not intelligent and not suitable for town driving.  Has anyone experienced similar and is there a solution (that doesn't involve amputation :-D )
