Peugeot Cam Belts 4 May 2001 (Forum)
In the course of my work I change a lt of cam belts. Some is easy, some is not. Yesterday I had the misfortune to change the belt on an S reg 406 LX 1.9 Turbodiesel. I think I can honestly say yhat apart from a Toyota MR2 this has got to be the most unfriendly installation I have come across to date. Whoever "designed" the underbonnet area on that car? -
Cabrio joy 10 May 2020 (Forum)
The later Toyota engined cars are utterly reliable and a hoot to drive but the interior looks like something from the 80’s and they’re awful to get in and out of. I’ve also had the pleasure of a track day at the wheel of an Aerial Attom with a supercharged Honda VTEC motor in what is basically a shopping trolley. -
FIAT Doblo Cargo - Shaking on acceleration in all gears 7 Feb 2014 (Forum)
Crowbars have been applied to wishbones to check for free play. Top and bottom gearbox mounts have been changed. N/S driveshaft inner CV tripod joint replaced by independent Fiat specialist. When this didn't help, I got an entire new driveshaft fitted on the O/S. No improvement. So both inner CV joints are new. The van turns in tight circles in both directions, backwards and in reverse with no clicks or knocks from the CV joint area. -
Life story of a car - Polo C 1985 23 Apr 2010 (Forum)
We were lucky with those and it only suffered the repeated driveshaft outer joint boot failures that seemed typical of VW boots at the time. It`s time was up - but the Old Man watched it running around locally for a few months, driven by the lad working at the nearby garage - to whom it had been given. I`ve never serviced one car for longer and can still see, in the minds eye - every detail of the engine bay. -
Just another manic Monday..... 29 Mar 2005 (Forum)
s hit the car at its strongest point at the back. That is, the areas directly below the drivers side, rear light cluster. No lights or glass was broken, in fact, not even a scuff! She?s moved that lower corner of the car about 3 inches into the boot space, but the boot floor aint damaged. -

Ah, the true banger. 28 May 2021 (Forum)
It was also an eye opener how fast things had moved with 1994 Mondeo’s, Rover R8’s seemingly a light year beyond an 1984 Sierra, Montego or Cavalier. I don’t think things have moved as quickly today with cars dating circa 2010 still pretty modern. We often sold end of life cars to Glaswegians heading to Blackpool on holiday. -
Cadillac innovations 19 Aug 2018 (Forum)
This led to Leyland pushing for an alternative and safer means of starting a car. 1929, Syncromesh gears. Sometime in the mid 20's a man called Earl A Thompson turned up at Cadillac HQ in Detroit having driven from Oregon with his brother, a dealer, in a Cadillac which he had fitted with synchronised manual gears of his own design. -

Vauxhall Vectra B facelift (1999 - 2002) - 00 1.8 EM light/ECU? 17 Feb 2014 (Forum)
My first post after a long time gleaning all the excellent info on these pages and other forums too. Well here?s my story. I have a vectra 1.8 petrol estate on an x plate (2000 I believe) with an ecotec engine. About 3 months ago it started with the EM light coming on permanently followed by all the loss of power/cutting out and using far too much fuel. -
Sports & Performance Used Car Dealers 9 May 2012 (Forum)
I appreciate that they probably do buy a few from desperate private individuals, but they must need to go to a specialist S&P auction for the rest. If you guys do know please let me know! Sorry for the ramble on! -

Renault Clio 1 Petrol (1991 - 1998) - 93 1.2 Cat red hot, cyl 1 plug carboned, black 31 Jul 2010 (Forum)
Spark good on all cylinders. So after less than ten minutes running the CAT still gets red hot. Since it?s not taxed I can?t drive it far? even if I dared with the CAT like that. However the engine seemed to be at or above operating temperature when I tested it. I tested the compression which came out at: 12.2, 12, 11.5, 11.5, on cyls 1, 2, 3, and 4. -

Modern traditional - who does it well? 25 May 2007 (Forum)
It's unmistakably a Jaguar and yet looks content to be its 21st-century self, rather than a clumsy 60s hommage. The new S-type is supposed to be a looker too, so let's hope it works - I like Jaguar, live near its factory and would love to see it doing well again. * Aston Martin and Bentley can probably be bracketed together, in that they've managed to modernize their look without losing their roots. -

Mileages and misconceptions? 25 Sep 2006 (Forum)
To me that makes changing a car he admits he loves financial madness, although he doesn't see it that way. (By the way, I know it?s entirely legitimate to just want a change, I?m only questioning the financial side of this). What do people think? G -
Reducing the cost Personal Injury claims 14 Dec 2005 (Forum)
The following is a copy on an article in today?s Sunday Telegraph by Teresa Hunter in the Money and Jobs section. It is not available online, so I have retyped it for the Backroom. The cost of motor cover and other insurance will fall under radical plans to overhaul the personal injury claims system. -
Thoughts from America 30 Sep 2005 (Forum)
A couple of annoyances, wind noise around the sunroof/roof bars at 50mph plus also the "tiptronic" type auto transmission allows low gears to be held at higher speeds though not high gears to be held at lower speeds, i.e. selecting "2" in fact allows the transmission to use either "1" or "2", selecting "3" allows the transmission to use either "1" "2" or "3" etc, hence one cannot use the V8's torque to increase speed, any reasonable prod of the accelerator results in a rather more urgent kick down than really necessary. A few years ago a visit to the 'states prospered very few genuinely interesting cars the average "yank tank" being a wallowing gas guzzler however it is clear now that there are some great cars available in the US that we do not see in Europe, the Acura (Honda's premium brand) TL and RL 4WD are great lookers and with 258 bhp 3.2 and 300 bhp 3.5 V6's they go a bit too.
