polo wont start 21 Feb 2007 (Forum)
after a month or so, the problem arrised again and eventualy the engine stopped all together, it will turn over but it wont fire. ive checked the fuel line and theres fuel getting as far as the single point injection unit. after there theres nothing at all. could it be the 's.p.i' or something to do with the 'e.c.u'? or could it be the battery? i would be very thankfull if any one could help or advise me on this matter as my legs are realy hurting from having to walk everywhere. -

right. mk2 1043cc polo with 1b3 on it. over 2 weeks, was getting a little harder to cold start. then on one night of warm engine drive, it kepts stuttering as if it had run out of fuel, then recovering itself again.(has a new filter b4 that happened) limped home. looked in morning and it failed to fire. took cover off airbox and found fuel spurting up out of carb top. conemmed carb. got another off a scrapper and that fixed car for 6 months. -
Petrol rationing - what if? 30 Oct 2006 (Forum)
I remember, at the time, being pretty miffed because owning my motorcycle only entitled me to a reduced number of coupons compared to, say, a car. I felt that everyone should be entitled to the same amount of fuel and should be allowed to use it as they wished. Can anyone confirm when petrol rationing coupons have been issued since ww2 - and if they were actually used? Also, if we should end up in a situation where petrol was rationed again, should the owner of a thirsty car be entitled to more than, say, a fuel efficient motorcyclist? -

He has now gone on 2 wks hols so has brought it back, it will start now but i have a battery on the floor with 2 leads direct onto the fuel pump, to connect when i need to move the car.there is no feed from the ignition to the fuel pump, neither the mechanic or myself have a wiring diagram. Problem Golf 25 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Ive explained to them that when I pull away and want to excelarate, the car hesitate, I then have to dip the clutch to get it to go faster!! The mechanic at VW said maybe I should drive it harder, but it already using more fuel than I think I should!! Im at a loss and my warranty runs out this March!! Ive even put Fuel Filter, its done under 70,000 miles. Not due for plug until 80k. Maybe it needs another Throttle Body!! -
306 HDi - sooty exhaust 20 Jan 2006 (Forum)
For the last 1000 miles a grey cloud had been visible in the r/v mirror when accelerating, and gobs of soot are sometimes ejected at the rear. Other data: oil consumption not measurable between changes; fuel has been up to 60mpg but is falling; starting and running are normal; temp gauge normally just below 80° but went up to 95° in a traffic jam recently. Just had its 36K service, with fuel and air filters, and things have improved (cloud not seen so far), but indie says it's not quite right and he would need the Pug diagnostic to sort what he believes is an electronic problem. -
Vauxhall Cavalier TD starting probs 6 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I suspected the heater plugs. I changed these for new ones. Problem still existed. I then changed the air filter and the fuel filter. Still the same problem. I have put injector cleaner in the fuel and its still the same problem. What I noticed tonight whilst messing is when I turn the ignition and let the heater plugs go out and then repeat this 3 times, it will start ok. -

old top gear question.. 20 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Just been having a discussion with my mate in work about Audi's, he's got an new A6 and was banging on about how good it was with MPG for a car of its size and it made me think.... ...I remember watching top gear months and months ago where clarkson did some kind of challenge in an Audi, not sure if was the A6 or A8?? where he did a challege where he went from London to Glasgow and back again on 1 tank of fuel. The problem is I only saw the 1st half of the programme and didn't get to find out if he made the full journey? and for some reason its bothered me for ages! I remember him turning off all lights and air con and driving at 56 all the way to conserve fuel. -
Best and worst mpg's 17 Aug 2005 (Forum)
I'll start us off: Mine is the old fashioned method as mentioned above, brim tank, reset milo, use fuel, rebrim, compare fuel used to mileage completed. Worst tank: 23mpg Best tank: 33mpg I'm not quite sure which of those is the most embarrassing :D That best tank was done almost entirely at between 100 and 120 mph though (in Germany) so I think is quite impressive. -
Sub Standard Shell 13 Jun 2005 (Forum)
I was curious to know if anyone else had encountered this elsewhere(the filling staion is in deleted , presumably the bad batch of fuel came from deleted ). Also, would this have any adverse or noticeable effect on a car? It did also wonder what sort of quality control system picked this up after it had left the refinery rather than before. -
Mazda 626 Noise + fuel economy 4 Mar 2005 (Forum)
I have a Mazda 626 GXi SE 2.0i estate. It is nearly 3 years old and has developed a loud in-car resonance (low frequency thrum) at an engine speed of 1500... -
vw polo help! 6 Jan 2005 (Forum)
I hope there is someone who can help me and my polo :) Recently my 1.4 cl polo '98 model is using an enourmous amount of fuel! almost a whole tank of fuel to do 200 miles on the motorway- normally it has only ever used just over a quarter of a tank to do that! It also is very slow to turn over on cold mornings and makes a ticking noise when it is at stand still. -
Mazda Premacy hot starting problem 20 Sep 2004 (Forum)
He then said it might be the coil? I have a theory it may be the injectors or something to do with the fuel injection system. It has got noticeably worse since the beginning of September when the 'winter petrol' was introduced to the forecourts. Put some petrol and fuel injector cleaner in on Saturday and it seems a little better already. -
Mondeo TDCI misfire- Is this the answer? 25 Dec 2003 (Forum)
He says the valves have a tendancy to stick open just as they should be closing and so this upsets the calibration causing misfiring, flat spots and poor response. Has anybody seen a TSB on this or heard anything about it? By the way Ive had the fuel filter upgrade, the fuel pressure sensor wiring upgrade and the last software/ recalibration was on 4 November- there is now an even more recent version available. -
Main Dealer Servicing 4 Aug 2003 (Forum)
After 40,000 miles I have just found out that the fuel filter on my diesel Seat Arosa has never been removed from the vehicle and never drained of excess water. The car has a full Seat service history and was last serviced in April 03. The car was very rough after starting it up one morning and since I had a similar problem on Vectra diesel a while back I attempted to open the fuel filter drain plug. -
Clio petrol pump 22 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Since the pump is beneath a hatch under the rear seat on top of the tank it looks like a simple unscrew fuel lines and pump body and drop in the replacement. Is it really that easy? I've sent him off to buy a Haynes manual but does anyone have an experience of changing the Clio pump and what to watch out for? -
Jerking 93 Astra 1.4i 19 Apr 2003 (Forum)
The problem was really bad ie it was jerking in every gear and even when not accelerating. I have changed the spark plugs, changed the fuel filter and ran a bottle of engine cleaner in with my fuel. I think the two latter things have helped to solve the problem and now it only does it when my engine is cold, however sometimes when I drive it late at night when it has been stood a few hours, it is quite bad. -
Astra diesel cold starting 3 Dec 2002 (Forum)
Once warmed up slightly -no problem. The glow plugs are new so there should be sufficient heat. I have a new air and fuel filter to fit in case there is a blockage in the airflow or moisture in the fuel but would appreciate any advice as to other potential solutions Allan -
Golf mk2 GTI 8v or 16v 22 Nov 2002 (Forum)
I am thinking of selling my Carlton and getting something that doesn't gobble as much fuel. Also the complexity of the carlton and stuff going wrong is beginning to scare me. So, having sold my trusty Golf CL, I want to return to the fold but with more power and luxury. Clearly a post '90 car is the one to go for, but should it be 8v or 16v?
