  • Replacing lap belt with a 3 point belt? 17 Jun 2006 (Forum)
I'm sure it can be done, I think the real would have to be bolted to the boot floor, but does it need a top support, or can it just run over the top of the seat? Saftey is of course the most important point, as at some point in the next year or two my two yongest will outgrow their group 1 car seats so I will need a proper belt. Also what would be a fair price for the conversion?
  • Vectra DI 2nd hand diesel pump programin 16 May 2006 (Forum)
Will tick over but wont rev - just goes a little rough when I put my foot on the throttle. Also hard to start if left overnight, runs on 2 or 3 cys and black smokes for 5 mins. then clears and ticks over OK but won't rev. I think it may be the pump. If I fit a second hand unit from the scrap yard, do I need to get the electronics re-programmed?
  • corsa 1.2 2001 stalling when cruising 14 May 2006 (Forum)
I have a sept 2001 1.2 manual petrol corsa and whilst cruising the car appears to stall for a moment, the rev counter drops right down, then it picks up again, and the service light (car and spanner) comes on. Car runs perfectly otherwise. I don't think i can flash the fault codes on this car, would thi be correct? So before I take it into vauxhall, has anyone met this problem before and know the likely cause. I have read there is a common problem with the EGR valve on this car?
  • Vectra 04 - petrol fumes 26 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Over the last few weeks I have noticed a strong petrol smell from my car.Mainly when in the car is stationary with the engine ticking over after a run in the car.It was in the Dealership twice and they said they couldn't fault the car and couldn't find the smell. (see http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=39213 ) In the last week an emission warning light came on and has stayed on.This is due to a faulty oxygen sensor. My car goes in to get this replaced next week.I think the garage will use this as the explanation for my problem.Hopefully this will turn out to be the case.Would this indeed cause this issue?
  • Tow bar electrics Peugeot 407 10 Mar 2006 (Forum)
I have had twin sockets fitted for Caravan towing but there is no feed for the fridge ( should only be live when engine runs due to high current flow) have contacted dealer where fitted and they say they dont normally connect the fridge supply, just permanent power for the van when static. I know this is a bit obscure but does anyone know anything about this?
  • Feasibility of Road Charging? 9 Mar 2006 (Forum)
On the basis that this relatively simple project is 10 years late, what chance do BR members see for the successful running of a database to charge every road user for their mileage, bearing in mind that it a Government scheme and will involve the use of computers?

  • Daihatsu Cuore front brakes 16 Feb 2006 (Forum)
I have 2 problems; one there are 4 bolts at back of caliper two on rubber mounts the problem is which two to remove to remove caliper. The second problem is that the pads also run on guide pins and there is no obvious access at the back to tap them out. Assuming I get caliper off what torque should bolts be retorqued to. Many thanks in advance Ian
  • What revs do you go up to? 13 Feb 2006 (Forum)
My rover 214 is on 111,000 and my 75 on 216,000. Of course, they have never been thrashed from cold and only after a long run do their legs get stretched! What do other backroomers take the tacho to and does it do any long term damage?
  • New VW Passat 9 Feb 2006 (Forum)
The problem with motoring hacks is that they ver rarely keep car for more than 12 months, have no idea about real life running costs, and have zero knowledge on design and engineering issues (robustness and quality). Any replies appreciated.
  • Front Fogs = Fixed Penalty 19 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I must admit I did not know it was an offence and cannot see the difference between Volvos and Motorbikes with daytime running lights. I wonder if there is more to the story?
  • 51 plate fiesta no heater 18 Jan 2006 (Forum)
my girlfreind has a new to us 51 plate fiesta, with the old style pushrod engine, the heater made a slight hint of warmth at first, so i suspected the stat was stuck open weve had a new stat fitted and now there no heat at all! even after a long run, the garage suggests its the matrix , would i wrong in thinking a 2001 car with service history shouldnt need a new matrix?? it would need to be totaly blocked with sludge to cause no heat wouldnt it??
  • Am I asking the impossible? 16 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Is there such a thing as a car that has good fuel economy and great performance. By good fuel economy I mean over 40mpg on a run and 30ish around town. By great performance I mean at least 150BHP Other considerations to consider are - it must cost around 6K, have 5 doors and be "family sized" (Mondeo/Passat size) I'm thinking diesel, but which one?

  • Ibiza cupra 20v Turbo no oil! 1 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Car had a full history and had a major service end of August. There was no oil light on and engine sounded fine when I heard it run earlier on. Was I right to asume the worst or do you think that there might have been enough oil in for there to be no problems? Thanks for any help.

Cannot get a 12V signal across bulb-holding contacts; and the number plate lights don't come on even with engine running and all other lights on. What is the next step?

  • VW Passat cv boot and front drop links 26 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Had a 80K full service done and a number of issues were identifed. The CV boot needs replacing and both front drop links. OK? The car is 6 years old, 80K, (runs great mind!)but when VW told me the parts and labour, I nearly fell off my oerch! £130+ for the CV boot and drop links £175+ (supplied and fitted in both instances) I'm not knowledgable under the bonnet, but there must be an alternative.
  • The Fantasy Garage 25 Sep 2005 (Forum)
When I win the lottery tomorrow (I've got to win eventually) the first order of business is to buy a nice big house with a 4 car garage. The question then is what to fill the garage with. My current list is: 1. For day to day running about, a Range Rover. The supercharged one, I think. 2. For fun, a Lotus Elise. Preferably a 111R. 3. For intercontinental cruising, a DB9. 4. A true exotic, in this case a Konigseggg. Because I can.
