Wrap up your engine to save fuel 8 Jan 2004 (Forum)
I see that a German professor at Cologne Tecnical College has developed a new thermal jacket for a car`s engine, that is claimed to save 5% fuel even during the summer months, apart from the obvious benefit of quieter running. It seems one of the prestige German manufacturers will be the first to fit this option. -

The Mechanical Guru who works on the firm\'s Cavalier has a Mitsubishi pick up X plate. Air Con has packed up and a new matrix thingy has been diagnosed. Mitsubishi want an arm and a leg...he has identified it as being made by Axel, Axil or Axle. -
Berlingo dancing gauges 26 Jul 2003 (Forum)
My two year old berlingo\'s dash has recently started playing up. On startup, the needles and gauges randomly bounce up and down and the clock resets itself. Its as if the pwr supply to the dash is intermittant. I have checked all the fuses and wiring as far as I can. -
Nissan Almera 16 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Thanks, Pork Pie. above wording amended. Posting soley in caps is thought to be bad manners (it\'s a way of expressing bad temper because it looks as if you\'re shouting). -
Astra gearbox oil 1 Jul 2003 (Forum)
I have a astra 94 1.4i, sometimes ago i changed the oil and filter, when asked if the gearbox oil needs topping up, i was told it that the gearbox is sealed and no oil needs changing. Are astra`s gearboxes the sealed type like batteries?? The car sometimes is balky when changing do you think it might be needing gearbox oil? -
No aircon, rover? 6 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Hi, I have a Rover 420 SLDi 98(S). It was serviced at a main dealer last week. Just tried the aircon & it doesn't seem to be working. I think the system is 'operating' but not cooling the air. The only visible evidence of anything dodgy is a small amount of green fur around the aluminium pipes around the low pressure service connector. -
BMW Triple Crown 5 Jun 2003 (Forum)
In the 2003 International Engine of the Year Awards, I see BMW have won 3 awards. In the 1.6 to 1.8 litre category, the winning votes went to the 1.6L MINI Cooper S, - In the 2.0 to 2.5 litre it went to the 325i engine as will be fitted to the new Z4, - and in the 3.0 to 4.0 litre category, it went to the 3.2 litre motor as fitted to the M3. -
Oil colour 19 May 2003 (Forum)
When the colour of engine oil changes from clear to brown does that mean it\'s absorbed as much muck as possible? The reason I ask is that I change my oil & filter regularly - every 5k to be specific. I rarely use the car for short-distance My oil changes to brown within a matter of weeks of the change! -
Is it the right price for a 406?? 5 May 2003 (Forum)
I've just bought what apears to be a pretty mint Peugeot 406 2.0 SRi Turbo for £2550. It is a 1998 S-reg with 97,000 miles, silver, FSH, new tyres, Climate control and all the other usual 406 goodies. Compared to Parkers guide its a good buy, but is this really a good buy???? Jaguar (Avant, Shooting Brake, Touring)? 28 Jul 2002 (Forum)
Was this ever released or has someone chopped around with it? It had the double headlights and looked like an early 90's model with a private plate. Very strange to look at, but quite nice all the same. Must have a huge boot. Jonathan -
Lexus 16 Nov 2001 (Forum)
There is a problem with the Lexus that needs to be addressed, i.e. how do you refer to a plurality of them? Do you just add an 's' as in Astras, Peugeots, etc? (A fleet of Lexuss) Refer to them as 'Lexi' (as in hippopotami) or 'Lexuses' as in buses. Or just 'Lexus', as in Walrus. Can anybody think of any other car with a name ending in 'us'? -
Audi S3 & TT wheels falling off 29 Sep 2001 (Forum)
Reported in Autocar. There have been 6 S3's and TT's affected so far. If you have one of these, phone your dealer and get them to collect it, don't drive it. Lower radius arm snaps and the wheel folds in. Can happen at any speed. That's the S3 off my list then...... -
Insurance... Settle an argument 5 Sep 2001 (Forum)
MY mate's aquired a s/h car for his daughter. Car is currently off the road, no tax or MOT. Can he drive it from current owner's proprerty to MOT station for pre-booked MOT using the 3rd party provision in his own insurance policy, or does the car also have to be insured by current owner? -
Peugeot 5008 - Auto gearbox on peugeot 5008 4 Sep 2021 (Forum)
I’m looking at peugeot 5008’s from 2018 onwards. Can anyone tell me whether the auto gearbox is a torque convertor type or a clutch type (like dsg units). Dealer told me single clutch unit but I’m sure I read torque convertor online (unless that related to older model)?? -
Poor road surfaces - 4x4 Best ? 24 Jan 2021 (Forum)
Hi, Noticed in one of HJ's responses in the Telegraph a recommendation that 4x4's were a good idea with today's poorly-repaired roads and traffic 'calming' measures. What I am wondering is this - is a stiffly-sprung 'sports' suspension set-up, or a softly-sprung 'exec' type set-up, on a normal car, better or worse with regards potential damage ?
