  • Citroen AX battery warning light? 18 Sep 2004 (Forum)
Alternator died, so he has had fitted a new alternator and battery by his brother. Since then the battery warning light stays on all the time - but the car has been used everyday without fault for the past month. What could be causing the light to stay on? the car has no problems whatsoever and starts on the button everytime. Would a missed / loose connection on the alternator cause this?
  • Rose tinted glasses 31 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Oh the good old days. WOW you have got a 1600E. Must come round and steal those Rostyle wheels or collect the spare wheel from 4 parked 1600Es. That way the owners usually have not a clue when the theft took place.
  • Toyota auto stalling 2 Apr 2004 (Forum)
I fear that the Toyota agent's diagnosis would be, without hesitation, 'Replace the EMU' but this is a very old car for such an expensive remedy that is irritating rather than terminal. Any ideas out there? MWH
  • Buying a Beetle 16 Feb 2004 (Forum)
I have promised her that once she completes it and gets a job, she can buy a Beetle as she has always wanted one. Yes I know there are better cars etc but when she says she wants a real Beetle to go with the 30 model ones she has, you will kind of get the picture that it is not up for discussion! I am thinking that in 3 years time she will probably be looking at affording a 3 year old Beetle, ie one that is new just now.
  • Excessive brake pad wear - Fiat Punto 23 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Surely it should have lasted longer than 2 years. My Punto drives like an old car. Has anyone else suffered the same problems? Fiat Customer services have been so helpful they told me it was my style of driving and even put the phone down on me! When I phoned back to speak to someone in authority I was told there was no one I could speak to.
  • 3 Doors or 5 Doors? 10 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Do backroomers have any views on 3 door versus 5 door cars? I am about to buy a replacement for the trusty old 5 door Sunny soon. I want an Almera. The choice of doors arises because I don?t carry rear passengers much or have youngsters and their clobber to carry around.
  • Audi A4 Reliability? 28 Sep 2003 (Forum)
A colleague at work has had to have extensive work to the electronics/engine management system of his BMW 320D at less than a year old. Are the enormous volumes that BMW/Audi now sell at affecting build quality? I must say, if I was changing my Co car now I would go for another Accord.
  • Anyone else ever owned a Fiat Regata 10 Sep 2003 (Forum)
..or am I the only unfortunate victim of this italian job. Although I couldn't complain about the car (much), I found spares could be a real problem, so much so that even SWMBO gave me the blessing to get another one cheap for spares! Oh and the rust, well mine wasn't that bad but would have needed sills welding for next MOT at 8 years old.
  • Fiesta clutch 5 Jul 2003 (Forum)
The only other thing I noticed was a little "travel" on the clutch - when you start to press it, there is no resistance for teh first little bit - but I think all cars are like that, aren't they? The car is a low miler. Has anyone come across this, if so is it an easy fix for an incompetent and what parts would I need?
  • Exchange of fluids! 18 Apr 2003 (Forum)
We have a 2 year old Skoda Fabia 1.9 tdi, with the PD engine. It has covered just under 45,000 km and we hope, as pensioners, to keep the car in good running order until WE are not! I asked my Skoda dealers to carry out the 45,000 service last Monday and in addition requested they change the engine coolant, brake fluid and gearbox oil, plus the air and pollen filters.
  • Franchised Servicing or not? 2 Apr 2003 (Forum)
I have a 1998 VW Passat that is due for a service about now. Since it is now a 5 year old car is it worth paying the extra in order to get the VW stamp in the service book? So far it has been serviced by VW but I would like to save some pennies. It is likely I will be driving the car for a few more years.
  • Sticking electric windows 29 Jan 2003 (Forum)
Son just called to land the latest problem with his car on my lap. The drivers window which has been taking longer to close lately would not fully close leaving a gap big enough to allow a thiefs arm in. As it was the drivers window I was not very confident of fixing it as the car is 14 years old and must have been operated 1000's of times.
  • Cam belts and all that! 13 Sep 2002 (Forum)
Just picked up my Vectra 2.00 CDX estate from its 40K service, which involves a cam belt change. I specified, when I booked the car in, that I wanted the tensioners changed at the same time and this was duly done, but on the old Vectra, like mine, Vauxhall don't quote a price for the complete job and the guy who took my booking didn't know how much the tensioners would be although he accepted that to change the belt without changing the tensioners wasn't a good idea.
  • Worst EU madness yet 2 Apr 2002 (Forum)
The barmy idea was proposed by a French EU Commissioner, Mons. A. P. Rille d'Wonne, after a British driver crashed into his car in Paris. His car was extensively damaged and blamed on the Brit's mental lapse when emerging from a junction on the wrong side of the road. It appears the Commissioner has much personal influence and has gained the support of most EU member countries without TB's knowledge.
  • Physical degeneration and the motor Car 12 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Topic, `Have your priorities of a cars features changed over time, in a way you would have once never considered? with particular reference to the ageing process.` I remember age 17yrs laughing at the `Old Man`, who was contemplating power steering on a car back in the 60`s.
  • Can I reject this paint job? 15 Oct 2003 (Forum)
I had the misfortune of someone in attempting to avoid an undertaking moped swerve and plant the corner of their car into my bumper. Fortunately neither of us were going that fast and it was only slight contact. There wasn't too much damage to my 6 month old car but a new bumper was required and the bonnet had a crease that had to be ironed out.
  • Modern mainstream cars are boring. 10 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Having recently upgraded to the plush luxury (relative to what I used to have) of a 2001 Honda Accord 2.0 SE Exec, I can't help but feeling nothing more than "content". Wondering if it was just my choice of an old man's car (I'm only 27) that was causing my perfectly comfortable but equally dull driving experience I had a thrash about in a few other cars. Father in-law's 110bhp 1.9TDi Golf (Mk4) Friend's 1.8 GTi Golf (Mk4) Friend's 2.0 GTi Golf (Mk3) Brand new 1.6 Civic (courtesy car - now that did get a serious thrashing) - my Accord was in for a minor hi-fi tweak.
  • Ford Focus - Selling an older car/buying a newer car 20 May 2016 (Forum)
Given the light that is on I think we are going to find it difficult to sell. We have been to a few places to look at new cars and it looks like we would get about 750 for a trade in but we already have 1300 invested so this would be quite a loss. Any suggestions on how we should handle this or what our best bet would be to getting a new car and not taking such a big loss on the old one?
  • What to do with a deceased's (worthless) car? 27 Aug 2015 (Forum)
The car is an 06 reg Peugeot hatchback (can't recall the precise model) which is missing several bits of trim and has a large dent in one side.  It was my brother's old car and I think it might have been an insurance write-off (non-economical repair) although it is now back on the road.
  • Mazda RX-8 - new car tax rules, we've run into trouble 18 Jan 2015 (Forum)
My son bought a car from a local garage doing a trade in on his old car. The sale completed on the 2nd October but prior to that the garage had taxed the car on his behalf so that he could drive it away. He queried with them whether they could still do that with the new car tax rules but they assured him that they couldn't sell the car untaxed and could still do this.
