  • Porsche Macan - not sure which to get 1 Jan 2015 (Forum)
I think diesel is going to get taxed a lot in the future due to its excessive particulates. Have driven the diesel Macan which is v g. Did not like to see the extra pipe under  the fuel filter cap which has to be charged up every 12K miles and costing £125 each time though.  Anyway think petrol S is the best way to go. Do you think the petrol turbo costing another 9K is cost effective considering the petrol consumption is not really that different between either version and is in the same tax bracket re CO2 and considering future depreciation which would be best do you think?
  • Saab versus Volvo - Comparing and buying 29 Dec 2014 (Forum)
They are both 03 reg, both have best part of a years MOT and have mileage of around 140 000. Priced at £1500. I am guessing the Saab probably has better fuel economy, being diesel. But have heard all sorts of problems regarding limp mode and fly wheel problems. The volvo appears to have the most reliable reviews? Both of these cars have good service history.
  • Honda Civic - Honda Civic or VW Golf 4 Oct 2014 (Forum)
My pocket tells to get the Golf, but I keep hearing that Honda is a lot more reliable than VW and has better real world fuel economy and the Honda also has slightly more bells and whistles than the Golf. Does anyone have experience of both cars and is able to give me some feedback on them. Thanks for your help
  • Car for a mixed road commute 4 Sep 2014 (Forum)
Hi all, I'm looking to buy a second hand car that should hopefully be fuel efficient and reliable. I have a 70 mile round commute which, on a one way journey, consists of about 5 miles city driving, 15 miles motorway driving and 15 miles on A/B roads (although there's sometimes a bit of traffic on these).
  • audi a4 tdi - Engine Tuning (SAVE ON DIESEL) 23 Aug 2014 (Forum)

  • 1999 Golf Mk4 GT TDI 1.9 110 - '99 Golf Mk4 stalls randomly 3 Aug 2014 (Forum)
Could this be blocked injectors? Injector loom? Dodgy fuel? (I use the same Shell station usually) Any ideas gladly received!
  • Vauxhall Astra G Petrol 1.6 8v - High emissions at fast idle 26 Jul 2014 (Forum)
Any clues/tips of causes of High emissions as above. Would a Italian drive help this as he tends to be a careful driver to save fuel and low daily mileage max of 16 miles round trip twice a week of 50mph max. Thanks
  • 1997 ford explorer - finding parts for 1997 ford explorer in the uk 21 Jul 2014 (Forum)
hi...I have had a 1997 ford explorer for about a year and a half and no real problems to report...but right now I am looking to find two track rod ends and rear brake pads so it can pass its M.O.T, I was informed that the track rod ends can only be obtained from Ford themselves,if thats the case its goodbye explorer !! which would be a shame as apart from its heavy fuel consumption its been a reliable work horse especialy in the winter as I live in the highlands of scotland...does anyone who owns an explorer advise me where I can obtain pats etc....
  • Any - Mercedes Autobox Fluid Changes 15 Jul 2014 (Forum)
With its short shift times and almost imperceptible gear changes, the system ensures the engine is always operating at the optimum speed to minimise fuel consumption. Noise and vibrations have been reduced, adding to an already sublime driving experience. And longevity has been increased, with the recommended transmission fluid change interval extended from 30,000 miles to 75,000 miles."
  • Ford Fiesta - fiesta 1.8d, black smoke and lack of power 4 Jul 2014 (Forum)
when i accelerate there's a lack of power and a fair bit of black smoke. if you keep accelerating and get the revs up it clears, pulls pretty hard for what it is and the smoke disappears. with quick gear changes you can keep it pulling, but if you lift off it needs to be cleared again. i pulled the pipe off the air box to rule out the air filter and it's had a recent fuel filter. i'm leaning towards a dodgy injector, but i'm not that clued up, any ideas?
  • Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - 2003 - 150 tdi overboost 10 Jun 2014 (Forum)
They said the cheapest option was to replace the boost valve as this sometimes cures the problem. Personally, I think it may be sooted up as it was over-fueling before the head change and chucking out black smoke so replacing the turbo is more likely but I can't afford that on top of what's already been done recently so I'll have to sell the car. Is there a cheaper solution anyone?
  • Peugeot 406 - Peugeot 406 D8 2.1TD Cooling fans not working 19 Apr 2014 (Forum)
I replaced the temp sensor which made no difference. When I unplug the temp sensor (brown plug) which is mounted beneath the fuel filter, the fans kick on at full speed at the same time so I know the fans work. Also, when I turn on the a/c the fans run at low speed but the car still gets hot on the freeway or going up hills. The next step is the check the relays, does anyone know where they are and what they look like?
  • Audi A4 - Motorway mileage 15 Apr 2014 (Forum)
Runs well but has been bit expensive with 1K repair each year at least and change of tyres Mileage is only 36/gallon, I dont necessarily stay at 70-75, if I did it would be 42-46 Would it really save me good deal if I buy anothet 1.8-2 litrecar petrol or diesel? Which? I am partial to Germans ie whatever fuel economy will be offset by downpayemnts! I expect to keep doing 25-30K per year for another 5 years and don't like small cars Help!!
  • Astra 1.7cdti 04 pre facelift - Astra1.7cdti engine code p100 and p110 up with spa 16 Mar 2014 (Forum)
hi my car had bad starting problems it was diagonised as low pressure from the fuel pump which i changed by getting one from a breakers the car it came off was low mileage. It cured the starting problems but now the spanner light comes on , originally with codes p100 and p110 we cleared this with our cheap hand held but the spanner light is still on, sometimes it goes out but more often its on, the car drives fine as is not in limp mode.
  • Golf gti 1.8 t 180 2003 - Volkswagen 12 Mar 2014 (Forum)
Also when drinking at any speed the car may lose power and if you keep your foot on the accelerator the power will return. I have fitted a new turbo , changed the throttle body, new fuel filters and turbo pipes have been checked for leaks. The car has also had a diagnostics check with no fault found. Does anyone out there have any ideas on what the problem could be? The car is 2003 limited edition with anniversary engine.
  • Ford Fiesta Van - Fiesta van - big enough load space for bikes? 18 Feb 2014 (Forum)
I've been looking into a used car and have been thinking about a focus. A fiesta was appealing for its good fuel economy but I ruled it out as I frequently like to be able to put my bike or water sports equipment in the back. It's only just occurred to me that a fiesta van could offer the good economy and an open load space for various muddy and sandy kit.
  • Vauxhall Zafira Tourer - DPF on Zafira tourer and S-Max 17 Feb 2014 (Forum)
Hi all, I currently have a 2007 Mazda 5 2.0 diesel which I am planning on replacing with either a Zafira tourer or Ford S-Max. One thing I have never liked about my Mazda is the fact that it dumps un-burnt fuel from failed DPF regens into the oil sump.  Does anyone know if the Zafira tourer and S-Max also do the same?  I found a copy of the Zafira tourer manual on line and the section about the dip stick doesnt mention anything about increasing levels.
  • Land Rover Freelander 2 - Bad Service 29 Dec 2013 (Forum)
The guarge revovered the car and have changed the oil 3 times and say the car is OK. The problem is that although it runs OK the fuel efficiency has definitely dropped by 20% of it pre service level. The garage say the car is OK but I think damage has been done.  What can I do in this instance? Kev
  • Volkswagen Touareg 2.5 Date 2009. - Diesel particulate Filter 8 Dec 2013 (Forum)
It returned on the way home. It has stayed on. There is no apparent loss of performance or increase in fuel consumption.  Local dealer has said it is the DPF and it needs replacing at £2500!! I am doubtful of the diagnosis because the DPF light has not come on, and the "engine block" warning came on after several hours at high motorway speeds when i would expect the DPF to clear itself not clog up, and the mileage is only 45000.
  • Hyundai i20 1200 Comfort 1200 Petrol - Excessive Engine Revs Whilst Parking ! 2 Dec 2013 (Forum)
The vehicle has been into Hyundai SIX times and two main dealers , unable to effect  a satisfactory outcome. As this will drastically reduce clutch life and fuel economy.Throttle position sensors and housing have replaced and reset. To little effect. Normal driving ok. Possible ECU programming/Glitch or software problem ????? It has only covered 7K miles !
