I was interested to read the following from the MB website:

"This new transmission has been significantly improved in terms of economy, driving dynamics and ride comfort. With its short shift times and almost imperceptible gear changes, the system ensures the engine is always operating at the optimum speed to minimise fuel consumption. Noise and vibrations have been reduced, adding to an already sublime driving experience. And longevity has been increased, with the recommended transmission fluid change interval extended from 30,000 miles to 75,000 miles."

I'm not sure I agree that increasing the fluid change interval will increase longevity - seems contrary to logic....

I'll check my handbook but if I intend keeping my MB for a while I'll be getting the fluid changed much earlier.

Bought an old Saab 95 estate last year with an autobox and on servicing found it had been topped up mercilessly over the years and was over-full of 100,000 miles of black fluid. I suspect it had never been changed. Replaced with fresh at the correct level ....

Not so long ago, MB and others jumped on the sealed for life bandwagon, now miraculously the previous recommended is stated as 30k, a bit like politicians and their media mates rewriting history, and ignoring the bits we'd rather YOU forgot, to suit.

These makers make the rules up as they go along, its because of expensive experiments/guesswork that i shall continue to take little notice of the latest fads in servicing requirements and use common sense, good maintenance if done sensibly (avoiding the main dealers apart from that all important stamp whilst under warranty) is still much cheaper than the alternative, and i can't see that changing.

I agree with the OP's plan.

edit, i have been renewing the auto box oil on the Outback, owners forums recommend doing it 3 times (unable to drain the TC, and i'm not getting involved in pumping one lot in other out via cooler pipes), each time the gearchange improved noticeably, and it started off with clean looking red oil, i shall now do an annual single change to keep it sweet.

>>fluid change interval extended from 30,000 miles to 75,000 miles

Better than a few years back when gearbox fluid was promised as being "sealed for life" only for the box to fail early on.

I thought MB recommended 40,000 mile changes. This is the first I have heard of it being 30,000.
