  • Two small cars in 24 hours 18 Oct 2007 (Forum)
Both cars were very lively and I would have been very happy with 10% longer gears overall. This would surely have improved the rear world fuel economy. For what it is worth, I put in less than a gallon of fuel in the Pug for 37 miles (90 motorway driving- rest city centre). Would I have bought either of them to replace the Outback - no, but I could be tempted by a high class high quality smaller car.
  • Mercedes Diesel Timing Chain 21 Apr 2007 (Forum)
The small job of changing the O ring seals on the low pressure fuel pipes of a Mercedes diesel has turned into a big one. After changing the seals, I asked SWMBO to start the car while I worked the disconnected throttle lever on the injector pump. When the fuel got through, and the engine fired, it sounded more like something Fred Dibnah would be proud of than the nice smooth 6 cylinder rumble I was expecting to hear as reward for my work.
  • Company car - totally confused! 1 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Now having worked and had company car's in the past, I have paid this off my tax bill per month and any business miles i do I reimburse using the company fuel card. Basically, being a family firm...he has suggested if I buy a car he will pay me a set amount per month to cover loan repayment or a mileage limit - so i can avoid paying tax. The problem is...i dont know what is reasonable per month to ask for and the figure of 35p a mile has been aired by him.
  • VW Starting Problems 27 Jul 2004 (Forum)
My Uncle seems to think that the second problem is caused by the automatic choke not kicking in at all to help it start from cold and the coughing and spluttering is caused by fuel starvation as the engine is trying to fire but there?s no fuel there as the chokes knackered. It used to start like a dream any time you wanted it to from cold (apart from when it was damp in the quote above) and it?
  • Falsely accused 7 Jan 2004 (Forum)
It would appear that the Merc driver hadn't just pulled off the pump, he'd done a runner and now the cashier expected me to pay! I politely, but firmly, pointed out that I was not going to pay for someone else's fuel, whereupon she called the manager over. I explained that I had seen the Merc driver on the pump before me to which she responded that she only had my word for it as the CCTV wasn't working so they couldn't check therefore she felt that I had probably had the fuel and should pay!
  • Vauxhall vectra cdti 2008 - Vectra cam sensor 20 Aug 2015 (Forum)
So two weeks later, engine management light comes on again. I look to my handbook and it states that this could be water in the fuel filter so as it is still working ok a left it and thought I would sort it out when I got time. Two days later car won’t start. I called recovery again thinking he would clear out the fuel filter for me.
  • Dacia Sandero 1.2 Access - Dacia Sandero 1.2 Access Review 7 Jun 2014 (Forum)
Slight hampered by its low gearing, although nowhere near as bad as my previous i10. Fuel consumption started at 46.6mpg whilst running it in on its first tank of fuel (£50 from reserve to full at £1.289p p/litre) and then rose to a steady 48-49mpg ever since.  I always exceed the manufactuer's consumption figures, which is a pleasant surprise considering I thought it would cost me more in fuel than my previous Hyundai i10.
  • Ford Mondeo TDCI - 2006 Mondeo TDCI EGR Valve - Help Please!!! 29 Oct 2012 (Forum)
I cleaned out the existing EGR valve in accordance with all of the blogs (but not the mainfold itself) and have had the fuel filter replaced.  I only use Shell V Power fuel, and I have tried the 'italian tune-up' alluded to in a number of conversations.  Recently, I decided to see what happened if I simply unplugged the EGR's electronic connection - and while there is an initial puff of smoke in the initial accelartion thereafter, it basically disappears in its entirety after that - no smoke whatsoever irrespective of how I drive.
  • SEAT Altea (2004 - ) - Altea in Provence (Road Test) 8 Apr 2008 (Forum)
(I take it that this is because diesel engines are ?tight? when new, and fuel economy improves significantly after several thousand miles, whereas petrol engines are just about at their most economical when new?) I might add that the car was shod with Michelin Energy tyres, which should mean that fuel economy was about as good as it was going to get.
  • DIY service 2001 A4 TDi 130 22 Oct 2006 (Forum)
I was interested to find the oil filter on top of the engine under the silver engine trim beside what looks like the fuel filter. I now appreciate why the Audi parts man was trying to sell me the fuel filter too?.. Along with screen wash and pollen filter to add an extra £50 to my bill. Maybe net time, but I still don?
  • "Never again" jobs 23 Sep 2006 (Forum)
The lower cover on the cambelt refused to "snap in" to the upper cover. You wouldn't believe how much time I lost here. The mother of all air-locks was present in the fuel system when re-starting. I have bled the fuel system on this car several times, and this is the one and only time it has decided to soak me and most of the engine bay in diesel when I eased the filter outlet pipe off.
  • Renault 19 starting problems 22 Apr 2003 (Forum)
So, he poured some petrol into the throttle housing unit, and it started no problem. He said it might be the fuel filter. So, I arranged to have it fitted on Friday. The car started fine for the rest of the afternoon. Friday morning .... Rac man No2 arrives. Explained to him what was done the day before, and he had a look at the fuel injector thing inside the throttle housing unit, and done a few tests, and he couldn't find anything.

Still as comfy, and Blodwen can access happily after some doggy ibuprufen and what turned out to be a sprained ligament. (no surgery) Now has her own doggy hammock and harness in the back. Fuel consumption not the best, but as am not liable to spend on anything else can tolerate that. Inside has worn well.
  • Any - Shell V Power Price Premium 10 Oct 2024 (Forum)
I would be interested to hear what extra price people are paying for using V Power rather than regular fuel. When it was first introduced V Power (near me) was 3 or 4 pence a litre more than the standard Fuelsave but that seems to be getting bigger and bigger. For the last few months the average premium at the Shell stations has been around 11 or 12 pence.
  • Vauxhall opel combo 1.7 dti 2003 reg - None starter 25 Jun 2024 (Forum)
Got a van I've had problems with. Changed fuel filter topped the the filter up with diesel, ran for a few weeks now won't start. Been told it doesn't have a lift pump only a high pressure pump in the engine. No faults have come up, tried using a hand primer pump on the pipe that goes into the filter with a blue tag believe that comes from the tank?

  • Large SUV - Best mpg Large SUV 25 Apr 2023 (Forum)
My partner and I have both suffered back issues recently and think an SUV would benefit. My instinct was the Audi Q5 but I see that it is very heavy and therefore not very fuel efficient. Tax is also costly. We have 2x200 mile journeys each week and 3-4 times per year we make a near 600 mile round trip to visit my family. So the miles are high therefore mpg and running costs are important to us, as well as comfort.
  • Can you recommend an upmarket, reliable hybrid SUV 19 Feb 2023 (Forum)
My budget is £23k. Ideally I want it under 3yrs old, but max 5 yrs old. I need heated seats, parking sensors, and fuel efficiency. Also, comfort and looks matter. Definitely want it to be comfortable to drive, smooth over potholes etc. I prefer automatic, want high adjustable seats and don't mind a sunroof. I worry about reliability and repair costs once out of warranty.
  • Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - 02 TDI power problem Help 11 Apr 2022 (Forum)
I have noticed that the gushing sound that I normally get when I turn the ignition on is no longer there. Could it be a fuel pump problem ? I have also read that it could be a MAF sensor problem. Anyone got any ideas ? I called the AA, but no faults came up on his diagnostic test with the lap top. I don't really want to take it to a VW dealer specialist and pay £100 an hour labour.
