  • Running in brake pads/discs. Ford Escort 25 Mar 2004 (Forum)
I continued driving, very lightly indeed, and by the time i reached my destination the smell had reduced. At the end of the return journey the right front wheel was fine, yet the left was now hot and smelly! Have i just reached some finite point in the wear of the disks/pads, where they are now fully run in or something, and will be fine after a few more miles?
  • Excessive brake pad wear - Fiat Punto 23 Jan 2004 (Forum)
I have also had to spend £110 on a new exhaust which completely fell off a couple of months ago. Surely it should have lasted longer than 2 years. My Punto drives like an old car. Has anyone else suffered the same problems? Fiat Customer services have been so helpful they told me it was my style of driving and even put the phone down on me! When I phoned back to speak to someone in authority I was told there was no one I could speak to.
  • Extended Warranties 31 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Extended warranty company say they will only accept a claim for the oil cooler, as the rest of the damage was "drive on" and not covered. Question is, can they invoke the drive on damage clause if the owner had serviced, inspected and operated the car under the manufacturer's recommendations? If there is no way the owner could have known about the leak - what's the point of the mechanical insurance?
  • Golf shuddering 1 Sep 2003 (Forum)
A friend of a friend drives a 52 plate Golf. I'm not sure about the version but I think it's a 2.0 petrol GTi. Unfortunately she is a new driver and helpfully told me that it's black and has a CD player. She's not sure herself and she didn't have the car with her to check when I spoke to her - so more information as and when.
  • Carlton differential ratios 21 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Incidentally, I notice that cat and non-cat versions of exactly the same engine differ in their final drive ratios....why would the cat necessitate this? Lot of questions I know :) As usual thanks for any help, advice or guidance Many regards to all Bob
  • Easy to stall Mondeo TDCi? 6 Aug 2003 (Forum)
I have just read a discussion on whether diesel or petrol cars are easier to drive. My Mondeo TDCi Ghia Estate is powerful and excellent on the open road. Give it some revs and it can take off from a standing start like a rocket. BUT it is also quite easy to stall in traffic, e.g. when pulling away gently in 1st, and it does not have the flexibility to pull smoothly in 2nd when the wheels are just turning.
  • Fiat - advise someone else who's tempted 14 Jul 2003 (Forum)
I'm new to this board, but looking back I gather that Fiat - the wisdom (or otherwise) of purchasing one, is a really hot topic when it gets going. I'm on a search for a small car for my 19 yr old daughter who's learning to drive. Lots more cars to investigate, but we both like the look of some nearly new or demonstrator Puntos. My husband is dead set against - then again he wont be driving it. I've read about the finanical background of the company, the possibility of unhelpful dealerships and the build quality of some of the cars, which people say can be a gamble.
  • Nobody really needs a 4x4 11 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Which is very funny, considering how much better the vehicle coped when I pressed the yellow knob down to engage the front wheels. Hence my theory, which is that noboby really needs four-wheel drive, they just need to think that they have it.
  • watch owt four yor carrs lads 4 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Now I agree that this is hardly scientific and not much of a statistical sample either, is this yet another example of the difference in driving behaviour between the sexes in general ?
  • Insurance "Business Use" Query. 12 Jun 2003 (Forum)
I am unsure what to include because her permanent place of work is a mobile classroom that is towed between local schools. Each week it is moved to a different school around Bournemouth. She drives to her mobile classroom and works from it each day. So, does the mobile form her permanent place of work (therefore requiring only commuting) or would her drive to work be considered to be visiting multiple establisments in the course of her business day, therefore requiring business use.
  • Failed MOT and no Tax Disc 25 May 2003 (Forum)
I would like to do this work myself, so therefore thought that the best option would be to submit a SORN, and keep the Landy in my drive for a while. However, I have two other cars, and would prefer them in the drive and to keep the Landy on the road, as it acts as a "barrier" to any errant motorists, and if I had to choose between the three cars, that would be the one I would prefer to get damaged.
  • What to do next 5 Dec 2002 (Forum)
Hi Ive been stupid, very stupid - drink driving. Yes I regret it, a lot, thankfully the only consequence has been the loss of my licence. Spare me the telling off, I know im wrong! But I need advice for my Mum - she has a Rover 111, P reg, 46k.
  • Peugeot 1.9TD Woes 26 Nov 2002 (Forum)
Last week SWMBO filled up the 306 with petrol instead of diesel. Managed to drive 1 mile to work and then after work managed to drive about 3 miles before the car gave up the ghost and I received a telephone call. Car recovered on the end of a rope and fuel pumped out the next day at a local garage.
  • Invisible Morons 19 Nov 2002 (Forum)
One of the really worrying things was that 4 of the vehicles without lights were HGV's, they're supposed to be driven by 'professionals' aren't they? I just find it amazing that anyone could even consider driving in those conditions without lights, absolutely amazing. Cockle
  • Eyesight tests ... 25 Sep 2002 (Forum)
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/2278299.stm On a previous thread, the case for 'oldies' was discussed - having to just sign a form saying they were still capable of driving... Legal question - is there any test of drivers who have been in accidents to determine whether they can see properly? I know the local system for 5-yearly license renewal includes an eye check, and a possible 'must wear glasses/contact lenses when driving' clause on the license.
  • Worst EU madness yet 2 Apr 2002 (Forum)
I was asked to keep this "under my hat", but cannot bring myself to comply. After all, it's the other lot who drive on the wrong side and, the sooner they grasp this, the better.
  • mondeo diesel 2.0DI (115bhp) 23 Feb 2002 (Forum)
I've done about 4,000 miles in mine from new and and getting a return of 35.5mpg all the time whether I am driving in towns or on motorways. No matter what driving style I adopt I can never get anywhere near the 47-48mpg (combined) figure many sites quote and certainly not the 61.4mpg extra-urban figure in the dealers brochure.
  • Water Ingestion 1 Feb 2002 (Forum)
The water I entered was no deeper than 6 inches the airfilter is housed on the nearside of the car and fresh air appears to be ducted from infront of the nearside wheel the ducting is hidden in the inner wing but appears to be quite lowto the ground. Surely this is poor design. In view of what has happened to me I would not even attempt to drive through a ford and attempt at all times to avoid driving through any puddles no matter how deep.
  • Polo running very strangely 8 Jan 2002 (Forum)
I have a 1988 Polo 1.3 with about 140000 miles on the clock. Just recently ive noticed the following: On the last two mornings, near the end of the 10 mile drive to college, the car has lost power and seems to have misfired badly. This morning it ground to a halt altogether. However on the drive back just now, the engine will have been warmer at the start, and it drove really well going back.
  • VW 1.8t 20v 16 Dec 2001 (Forum)
The garage replaced this FOC even though the car is 21 months old and a personal import with a 12 month garantee. However driving it home the temp still didn't get up to normal after 10 miles. (outside temp was +1C). Any advice please on how long it should take to reach normal and what the problem might be? Thanks Bob H
