Do you slow down in your own neighbourhood? 17 Feb 2010 (Forum)
I like to think that I am a fairly cautious driver, who generally drives fairly conservatively, especially in residential areas. However, I can't help but notice that I definitely slow down, when within a few streets of my home. Anecdotally, it also seems to me that my neighbours tend to drive along my street more slowly than other visitors. -
Speedometer / Milometer margin of error 8 Dec 2009 (Forum)
From comparing the speed on the clock against my satnav I know that my speedo is about 5mph on the optimistic side at an indicated 70. This is an error of ~7%. As the speedo drive also drives the milometer am I right in thinking that the error is also reflected in the milometer? If this is the case I can knock something like 14k off the car's mileage:) I'd be interested in other members' opinions and experience; I've got to drive over to Wales this afternoon so I'll compare the mileage from the satnav against the trip meter. -
I have been offered a speed awareness course 25 Oct 2009 (Forum)
I am inclined to accept the Horsham location, however the don't do automatic cars there. So this would mean driving a manual gearbox car - something I haven't done much of for about 15 years - apart from driving my Minor. Does anyone know how much driving is involved? -
Police dashing to "emergency". 21 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Although as far as I could see, the police cars were being driven in accordance with high-speed emergency driving, such driving is obviously an added risk factor on the roads and I question whether it is really necessary to drive like that on the way to a minor bump in a town street. -
Vauxhall Agila A (2000 - 2007) - 04 1.2 Small leak in petrol tank - safe to drive? 21 Jun 2009 (Forum)
We're just about full with petrol and I wouldn't describe this as a major leak(it's also on the opposite side of the car to the exhaust) but was wondering what the feeling was on how safe it would be to drive until I can afford to get the tank replaced at the end of the month. Thanks in advance for any help. Dave. -
Driving in Austria, tax and route advice 17 Jun 2009 (Forum)
I am driving down to Italy in the summer as usual, though this time we are having a couple of nights in Innsbruck on the way down. I know you need an Austrian Motorway tax sticker (vignette?), is it possible to buy one online like you can the Swiss one, if not where is the best place to purchase? -
Road caves in half an hour after driving on it 1 May 2009 (Forum)
I am quite shocked by this, I drive downt his stretch of road about 2-3 times a week and is only 2.5 miles from where I live. http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/s/1112627_hole_halts_traffic I drove down this just half an hour before, I remember being stuck in traffic behind a police van I just feel so lucky I set off when I did and if I didn't have a car there was a good chance I would have been on the bus which went over it :( It is nice to see our raod tax goes on inspections to ensure roads don't just fall in. -
Skilled driving 11 Apr 2009 (Forum)
Think about all those brake lights flashing ahead of you on the motorway, mostly indicating that the car is too close to the one in front. Discuss? What else might be considered to be a sign of very good driving? -
Professional driving lessons a necessity? 12 Mar 2009 (Forum)
I'm not shooting down Rattle's comment, but I'd like to know whether others agree. My eldest son is 15 at present and I'd love to teach him to drive like my father did for me. -
KIA Pride (1991 - 2000) - 93 1.3 CV joint - MOT fail? 25 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Some time ago, I changed the CV boots. After a while, I noticed part of the circlip that holds the CV to the drive shaft poking out the new boot. I pulled out half a circlip! The drive shaft had a bit of float, but I assumed that as everything was bolted together no harm would happen. Would this fail an MOT, and if so, where on earth do I find a new circlip? -
FIAT 500 Abarth (2008 - - HJ Review 14 Feb 2009 (Forum)
I had to sell in the end, journeys were just too painful. The ride is terrible and it is such a poor drive. If you enjoy driving at all I would not touch the basic 500. (Infact the Panda is a much better choice) This Abarth sounds like all these issues are sorted and I cant wait for a test drive. I have always loved small Fiats and it seems theyve scored a winner with this one. -
Insurance - ethnic loading ?? 24 Sep 2008 (Forum)
In the same way that when we apply for insurance we are assessed on a multitude of factors ( postcode , job, car type, where parked, driving record ) , my observations based on 22 years driving experience tell me that foreign drivers , particularly from the 3rd world ARE worse drivers , do commit more traffic violations and drive badly - maintained vehicles, and are therefore a greater risk . -
Vauxhall Corsa B (1993 - 2000) - 99 1.5td Warning Lights/Overvoltage? 25 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Hi, this is driving me nuts! Car was running fine then occasionally after first driving away, the ABS and Airbag warning lights would come on, ABS first. The tach will also drop to zero revs for a second or two then bounce back up. -
Peugeot 307 (2001 - 2007) - 02 2.0 warning lights on dashboard restricted powe 13 Jul 2008 (Forum)

Driving on trade plates 28 May 2008 (Forum)
Just after he passed me he had to conduct an emergency braking manoeuvre to avoid running into a car that had moved into his lane. He then resumed his frantic pace down lane 3. Only then noticed that the car was driving on trade plates. Could n't help wondering how the owner (or prospective owner) would have viewed the way car was being treated. What are the rules for using trade plates? Do they just mean that the car is being driven under the garage's insurance or are there other implications? -
Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 00 2.0 HDi - Fuel Economy 9 May 2008 (Forum)
Hi All, My 306 is giving me approx. 190 miles from 20 litres of diesel with nothing but urban driving/short journeys, this equates to 42mpg. The problem is that i am getting the same mpg when i drive entirely on the motorway. Parkers/Peugeots figures state that i should be getting about 25% more when driving on the motorway. -
Driving Test: who has right of way? 22 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Daughter has failed her driving test for the third time!! The Examiner failed her for 'hesitation' because an oncoming driver signalled for her to pass a parked car on her side of the road by flashing his headlights and she waited. -
Khan cleared of dangerous driving 8 Jan 2008 (Forum)
He said it reached 0-60 in 7.2 seconds which was "just like an average car". Mr Khan, who denies dangerous driving, reached a top speed of 47mph as his BMW hit Mr Hatton, breaking his leg. Perhaps I do not understand what a high performance car is. The BMW site states:- base model 530i 6.2 secs and the 650i 5.2 secs for 0-62. -
Drive in 5th or 6th gear? 24 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Please disregard the effects of accelerating above 50MPH in 6th gear for this question as I know the car would be a bit 'flat' this low in the RPM range. I ask this question as I would drive in 6th at this speed unless lots of hills but some people are saying it's more economical to be in 5th at this speed due to peak torque. What's your thoughts? Thanks -
Good driving = happy commuter! 10 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Driving along my usual commute on the A1(m) which is basically two full lanes of cars doing 50-60, I was please to see the person behind me in the Toyota Avensis kept a gap similar to the one I had from the car in front of me.
