  • Daewoo Korando - Jerky Auto Transmission 27 Sep 2012 (Forum)
Our ancient (2000) tow-car is a Korando with the Mercedes 2.3 4 cylinder and automatic (4 speed) box. Recently the box has become "hesitant" : put it into drive, give it revs and after a second or two it leaps forward. It can also creep backwards down a hill when in Drive. The car is used only to tow a horse trailer and hasn't even done that for a few months, so I don't want to spend a lot on it but equally don't want to scrap it.

  • Renault clio petrol 2002 - Clio 2002 auto transmission fault codes DF 016,036 10 Jul 2012 (Forum)
Took the car to the dealer and they hooked the gearbox computer to the scanner. The following faults were detected : DF016: final drive solenoid drive valve circuit DF036: pressure modulation solenoid valve circuit DF018: reduction slip DF109: engine torque multiplexed info. Based on the faults codes, they suggested that I change the pressure switch and the multifunction switch which will cost a lot.

So he MADE A U-TURN  and started driving back in the opposite direction. On realising there were about 500 cars and buses thundering towards him Continental-style (i.e. anti-clockwise) he again TURNED ROUND and drove round the roundabout once more.
  • Skoda Octavia - Car making noise after being at the mechanics 11 Apr 2012 (Forum)
I had the cam belt replaced a couple of weeks ago and since collecting the car from the garage I've been hearing knocking when changing gears mainly, I checked under the car today and the off side drive shaft has considerable play and makes the same "clunking" noise when I move it with my hand. About two weeks before the cam belt change the car passed the MOT test, so nothing wrong with the drive shafts then (not even any advisories).
  • Zafirall Zafira A '99 (X18XE1) - Alternator? 2 Apr 2012 (Forum)
So, alternator bearing giving up the ghost as a result of the less "stretchy" new belt as a nailed-on cause I thought. However, taking off the drive belt and rotating the alternator pulley by hand when cold, I can feel no evidence of excessive play in the bearing or roughness as it rotates. Feels like a new one. So what do you reckon?

  • FIAT Punto II (1999 - 2006) - 00 1.2 engine cutting out 16 Feb 2012 (Forum)
a minute later further down the traffic laden road - i was in 2nd gear and the same happened again - no judder or stutter - it just silently lost power and the battery and oil light came on - i started the engine whilst i was moving and finished my journey to work fine. i suspect it must be something electrical as the car has been driving fine and starts back up without a problem? any ideas of how serious this is as i'm meant to be driving a long journey tmrw...? thanks
  • All - Weather and the Media 7 Feb 2012 (Forum)
For the last 36 hours all I have heard is transport chaos, airport chaos.  I saw a news article about the M40 where there was traffic driving over what looked like 1 cm of snow yeaterday, and this morning they were talking about the A1M in N Yorks and the road and countryside behond the reporter was virtually snow-free. Are we all determined to convince us that we are all doomed if a few flakes of snow fall ?
  • Ford Focus 2005 TD - intermittent loss of engine power 28 Dec 2011 (Forum)
At any time when driving, all dashboard lights come on and engine loses all power though keeps running, then all goes back to normal after a few seconds or so: then it may or may not do it again. Also intermittently, engine won't start and again all dashboard lights are on: if the car is rocked, it will start, sometimes immediately, sometimes after several rockings.

  • Honda Accord automatic - buy 2.0i or 2.4 ?? 2 Jun 2011 (Forum)
Looking on autotrader there are lot sof 2.0i autos, many of which are very reasonably priced, and very few 2.4i s which are correspondingly more much expensive for similar spe/mileage  vehicle Does this mean the 2.4s are more desirable as a better drive, or just were more expensive to buy/run so people bought fewer ??? is there anyone who has driven both give me an idea of which is the better vehicle... Looks a big vehicle for a 2.0i and Hondas engines seem to be very lacking in low-down "grunt" - does the 2.0i have what it takes to make apleasureable drive  ???
  • I've had it with wheel alignment 28 Apr 2011 (Forum)
Now all that weight is suspended on a very small point and that can't do the overall geometry any good and hard driving, rough roads must take its toll.  The only proper way is to road test afterwards and then tweek the adjustment if it's not right,  road test again. This ofcourse would be very expensive but if it saves youn tyres it could be worth it.

  • Rav 4 - Considering an SUV type 22 Dec 2010 (Forum)
A vehical with a bit more clearance, 4WD capability would be useful I think, and I like the higher driving position. I also frequently need to drive over quite hilly terrain to work , narrow lanes which can have surprising conditions, to get to work. But reasonable running costs, reliability realy important, and my buget is £10K ish plus trade in.

  • Ford Fiesta - Advice wanted 22 Jul 2010 (Forum)
Was just looking for some advice... Ive just graduated and (fortunately) secured a decent job. My partner and I are driving a t reg fiesta, which is MOT'd until next year and we're going to try and keep it on the road, and we want to buy a new car. My new job involves 60-70 miles driving every day. I have some debt from University( approx 1000 overdraft), but need a car for my job, will my chances of finance be massively reduced?
