Is it just me or are the TV and printed media completely sensationalising a sprinkle of snow.

For the last 36 hours all I have heard is transport chaos, airport chaos. I saw a news article about the M40 where there was traffic driving over what looked like 1 cm of snow yeaterday, and this morning they were talking about the A1M in N Yorks and the road and countryside behond the reporter was virtually snow-free.

Are we all determined to convince us that we are all doomed if a few flakes of snow fall ?

I'm not for one minute saying that care shouldn't be taken in snow and icing conditions, as I went out yesterday morning and minor roads were still a bit 'interesting', but do we really need the 'fear of god' scenario everytime we get some normal winter weather ?

We just need to live with it and get on with it, and people who dont know how to drive in less than perfect conditions should stay off the road hopefully for ever.

"The UK is gripped by snow".

Er, N. Ireland is part of the UK, and we have had zero snow. None. It's 7C here this morning, and yesterday I was out washing the car in my t-shirt. It was 11C.

It was definately traffic chaos on Saturday night late in the midlands, chaos caused by incompetent (at both ends of the spectrum) drivers in ill prepared and useless cars getting stuck and crashing into one another for a variety of reasons but mainly a lack of common sense...travelling distances etc.

Mostly gone by Sunday midday except for untreated surfaces.

IMO most media weather coverage is hyped up rubbish! Words like, grip, plunge, plummet, lash are overstated. We learn that the temeprature is going to plunge to -6C - this is from +2C! In fact the temperature plunges more between mid day and midnight in the Summer but we never have our attention drawn to that! Other stupid phraseology is stuff like "In Central Scotland high pressure will be on offer" -No it won't! If you are there you have no choice! "Spits and spots of rain" what is this- Kid's TV. I switch the sound and enjoy the lovel;y Carol on BBC she has very obvious warm fronts.

Wall to wall last night about about freezing termperatures overnight, potentially as low as minus 8, (this from local news and weather) very icy roads, disruption highly likely.

Aware of this we knew our cul de sac and wife's work car park could be a skating rink so decided to use one car and arranged our day around this fact.

Woke this morning and it's +5 degrees, snow melting and no problems whatsoever.

Everything is absolutely overstated.

Whilst I agree it's sensationalised you must recall that it's locally quite variable.

Here in my part of Effics we had six inches Saturday night (boom boom!) and still have it this morning.

I own a 4WD with Mud+ Snow tyres, so not an issue for me.

I agree with you but the forecast is not that local and I'll lay odds that your forecast said something like "Siberian winds will sweep in from the North Sea and lash the East Coast. Temperatures will plummet as low as -2C and Essex will be blanketed with up to 6 inches of snow which will be slow to thaw as temperatures struggle to get above freezing for the next few days"

Paraphrase "There will be strong Easterly winds and up to 6 inches of snow overnight which may be slow to clear"

I believe it was pretty much that (according to my wife) but I myself I mainly get my weather info and news from the net. Accuweather etc

All - Weather and the Media - Armitage Shanks {p}

Yes, I have accuweather on my ipod and it is very good, hour by hour forecasts too!

Yes - they always do! We've had none up here; it was 4°C for most of the day, totally foggy though. It tried to snow the other day but to no avail.

I wonder what they would say about something like this

Probably just keel over.

Well where i am it snowed progressively for 6 hours on Saturday night. The road is clear now but pavements and car parks are still absolutely awful and its unlikely to get above freezing for a week.

Glad to hear that the snow in Suffolk is progressive. We don't want any of that old-fashioned set-in-its-ways snow, do we!

The media stance that we were again unprepared made me laugh. Salt will not stop the snow laying on a road. It can keep it clear if there is enough traffic, but on its own it can do very little. Then, once people get stuck, snow ploughs and gritters cannot get through and the traffic flow is not there to help the salt clear the snow. Thus you end up with a vicious circle. We were as prepared as we could possibly have been. It's all gone now anyway.

I take this thread is a windup?

Normal winter weather. Normal winter temperatures. Normal 10cm s of snow. Warmer than last winter (-10C vs -18C)

No issues here, main roads gritted and clear side roads didgy even dodgy, pavemnets nasty.

So what? It's Normal

I take it all complainers are used to living in the Bahamas in winter...:-)

Our council did as it usually does: was efficient..

Bunch of wusses.

I suspect the at least 50% of the problems caused by the weather are down to the lack of ability on the part of some drivers. I drove from Essex to Longleat on Sunday leaving at six am whilst the roads were relatively untouched by traffic. Some of the sights we saw on our journey were awe inpsiring for all the wrong reasons. At the bottom of our road which i managed perfectly well in a Corsa without any form of winter tyres or electronic aids some one had abandoned there C4 Picasoo at right angles across the road. Needless to say this wasn t helping matters for the few other motorists that seemed to be managing perfectly well. Best of all was the sight on the M25 motorway. At J24 where the worst delays seemed to be experienced overnight we passed several cars in various lanes of the motorway who were fast asleep in there cars. The traffic at this point was moving albeit at approx 30mph. In can appreciate that if you are stuck overnight in a jam with absolutely no cure in sight it must be boring and you are possibly tired, But sleeping in your car on the M25 with no warning lights on in lanes of moving traffic...........Finally the vast majority of cars that we saw that were stuck seemed to be rwd Mercs and BMW's!.

All - Weather and the Media - jamie745

There's two things that lots of people do in the snow which confuse me. The first is the person in a car who thinks that the more he stamps on the throttle the more chance he has of moving. The other is the person who get the snow off the windscreen but leaves 3 foot of it on the roof......what could possibly go wrong?

It always amazed me that people with fancy 4x4s and so on couldn't get to work, whereas I managed to do so in an old Focus with regular tyres, no ABS and no prior experience of driving in snow (when 2009-10 winter was bad). It's an attitude - I'm not keen on driving in snow as it's very glare-y on the eyes after a while, but I'm not going to stop my day-to-day life for a bit of slush.

All - Weather and the Media - jamie745

It always amazed me that people with fancy 4x4s and so on couldn't get to work,

Thats because the 4x4s these people own arent 4x4s at all. I saw a BMW X5 out in the slush earlier, i think i'll stick with the Pug.
