  • General: corrosion caused by under-use 28 Feb 2005 (Forum)
Another technical insight into what happens when cars are under-used, this one being from http://www.mb-w126-club.de/ "Cars that have been stored for a long time or that have driven many short stretches are prone of having defective or leaking exhaust systems or flanges. This is caused by the residue of sulphur, one of the ingredients of fuel. In every engine and exhaust system that is left to cool down, condensation will form. This condensation disappears when the engine is in use again. If the engine does not get hot enough to remove the condensation, the sulphur residue will chemically react with the condensation water to form an acid.
  • Citroen AX Radio 27 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Hi All We have just bought a Citroen AX diesel as a runabout and so far its been brilliant. I've only filled it up once, done 200 miles so far and the fuel gauge is still on 3 quarters. The car had no radio and I've bought a Citroen one for it. The connections at the back are 2 square connectors and a round connecter. There is a spare socket on the back of the radio where nothing seems to plug.

  • Best 4x4 for under £22000ish 2 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Either that or buy from Belgium or Germany, but that is added hassle. Any ideas please tell me 'cause cars are not my thing really, they drink fuel and get me where i want to go, hopefully. Cheers.
  • Vectra Advice 9 May 2004 (Forum)
I\'ve never driven a modern diesel and like the sound of the economy and power they give, but is it worth forking out £1000 extra? I won\'t save much in fuel costs as my annual mileage is only around 8k made up of a daily commute and the odd longer run at weekends.
  • Alcohol fuelled internal combustion engi 26 Feb 2004 (Forum)
I can find a google of sites extolling virtues of ethanol or methanol mixes for car engines but no references on use of pure e or m as a single fuel. Any advice on merits of either gratefully received. I am happy to take replies off line - Email as my profile please. None of the stationary engine sites have much about alcohol based engines. Moderators - apologies if car link is too tenuous!
  • Lexus - am I mad? 25 Feb 2004 (Forum)
Does anyone have any experience of running one? Are they as phenomenally reliable as they are made out to be? And what kind of real-world fuel economy can I expect? Can my local garage service one? Or should I just go for another Omega? Questions, questions. V
  • Petrol Pump Calibrations - Accurate? 30 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Is it possible to tell if the actual amounts on the petrol pumps correspond to the amount of fuel put into your tank? I ask this because I regularly fill up at a garage in Watford at 72.9p a litre and do not really notice a difference in the amount I am paying per tank when I use a garage here at 75.9p.
  • can vauxhall be trusted? 17 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Having experienced GM's unacceptable 1.6 petrol engine as at 1996 but having had no trouble with their current (if hardly leading edge) 2.0 DTi unit I am wondering if Vauxhall's current engines (petrol and diesel) and their engine management systems can now be relied upon to stay the course and keep out of the shop, and if the petrol engines, like those of other makes, can run satisfactorily on any BS standard fuel. Frankly, if I can't resolve this situation, my hard earned money will go to another maker next time - I can't afford to indulge pretentious cars that don't cut it even if I do have GM points.
  • VW Diesel misfire 17 Jul 2003 (Forum)
The problem started when the car was filled with petrol instead of diesel and driven. The tank and fuel lines were properly drained by VW and I was informed there would be no further problems. This all happened 2-3k miles ago so I thought any petrol still sitting in the tank would have gone by now. Anyone experienced anything similar or any idea's how to cure?
  • The curse of the cat 2 May 2003 (Forum)
I blame the wretched catalytic converter for most of the current raft of problems that inflict many of today`s cars, due mainly to the complication of electronic monitoring sensors (E.C.U`s) to control fuel/air ratios. There gas been much discussed recently (and justifiably) about the unreliability of the new Renault Laguna, but pre-cat models, like the Renault 4 and 5 were extremely reliable, and capable of 150k mileages without too many problems.
  • Car for 300-800 pounds 28 Feb 2003 (Forum)
He is looking for something bigger with 4 e-windows, e-roof, pwr-steering, airbag would be nice, etc. It also got to be Japanese (for reliability, build and finishing and fuel efficiency) I suggested to get the newest Primera 1.6 LX or Carina 1.6 GLi he can afford. Is there any other choice? Can our budget stretch to a Nissan Almera? Cheers Garrison
  • New Galaxy petrol smell 21 Nov 2002 (Forum)
No hissing when removing the cap to fill-up. No obvious leaks anywhere from the cap or underneath Fuel consumption normal. Cap appears OK as far as I can see, no obvious defects. Local Ford dealer said this is all normal....but common sense say's this is not, anyone else share the same experience ?
  • Rover 220 Coupe Problems 10 Oct 2002 (Forum)
I've tried disconnecting the following to determine a problem: Lambda Sensor ATS CTS TPS Idle control stepper motor Changed fuel relay, HT Coil, rotor arm and lead to distributor. Rover dealer had the car for a week and found no problem but tightened an earth connection. Problem returned the next hot day. Really stratching my head now and would appreciate any help.
  • Xsara headlamps 13 May 2002 (Forum)
(The handbook shows which lamp is which, but not how to get to them). There appears to be little space to get to the back of the lamp unit especially on the diesel where part of the fuel gear is close to the back of the lamp. Has anyone experience of changing the lamps? Can the whole unit be released just by undoing the torx screw behind the top of the unit?
  • Men should pay less for petrol! 19 Apr 2002 (Forum)
The adverege women stalls and starts and uses the car for school runs and 100yd drives to Sainsburys, thus being extremely inefficient on fuel. Gents on the other hand tend to take longer distant journeys and will always take the chance to pull out of a turing rather than hesitate and thus stall. On adverge methinks therefore, that pumps should consider usage by men and women and accordinly charge less to the more eco-friendly men..
  • Transit van economy 15 Dec 2001 (Forum)
I can avoid the bridge by going across country - takes longer than going down the M4, not much more miles though (app: 100 v 90). Is the Transit likely to drink £8:70 worth of extra fuel due to the none motorway type road? - it will be unladden on the way. Having not used a big van or diesel much I'm not too sure of the effect on mpg of winding roads and dealing with traffic. Anyone who uses a Transit regularly on Mway and winding country roads have any suggestions?
  • 2013 (13 Plate) Nissan Qashqai+2 (J10E) Petrol CVT - Nissan Qashqai+2 Piston slap after < 20,000 mil 1 Dec 2017 (Forum)
Noisy engine at 20K service At the first service after purchase, 21/04/2016, I asked Nissan to check the engine carefully for noise. I complained it was noisy, poor fuel economy, and fix the fuel flap. The fuel flap was not fixed, as the part was not in stock, but the engine was given an extra “flush” – no problems noted, and job-card states customer advised to monitor – though I cannot remember that advice.

He changed the fuel filter suggesting it MAY be dirty fuel. Twice RAC were called out with loss of power, and both mechanics told me not to drive it, was a turbo problem. 1 felt the loss of power as he drove it, the towed it.
  • diesel - Diesel Engine remaps and emissions. 10 Jan 2011 (Forum)
These parameters are measured solely so that the ECU can optimise the fuelling rate and timing to real time local conditions. Fuel quality across Europe is regulated to a common standard. Fuel quality outside the EU is of no concern to OEMs selling cars in Europe. 'Smoothing out the torque curve' Everyone knows that diesels have a horrible torque curve, particularly at the very bottom of the RPM range.
