Valuation of my A3? Need help! 7 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Just read HJ's part exchange trick. Bought my a3 in april 2006 as an ex demo (6 months old) for £18k. Intend on keeping it until its 2nd birthday. Hj's says when you part ex it compare it with similar models of similar age and mileage which the dealer has for sale, and don't accept less than £1,000 or 10% (whichever is the greater) less than the sticker price on these cars. -
Civic air con dead! 7 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Hi, we have a 2003 Civic old shape and today during a drive in what was a hot spell I noticed the air con was not working. I switched it off and there was no difference in the temperature of the vents. When I arrived home I sat with the car at idle, air con switched off, when I switched it on there was no load placed on the engine at all and the rev counter remained steady, the air did not get any cooler. -
I fancy getting a LR Defender 14 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Most vehicles I've seen on the web have quite high mileages. What's the reliability like? We have a 2 year old and a baby on the way so are car seats viable? 200, 300 or TD5? What's the difference? I'm reasonably handy with a spanner, so are they easy to self maintain? What are like to live with on a day to day basis? -
New Toyota Auris 3 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Has anyone yet looked over this new car? Had a good look at it on Sunday, in the showroom of course. I thought that the interior, in some respects was an improvement over the old Corolla but wasn't too keen on the arched centre console incorporating the gear lever and handbrake - this all seemed a bit gimmicky and impractical and only served to make access to an oddments tray a trifle difficult. -
Cheaper Insurance Cover? 2 Mar 2007 (Forum)
On the basis that you are 'never to old to learn'...I have been motoring for in excess of 45 years...I have only recently discovered that it is actually cheaper with the majority of car insurers to have an additional driver on the policy e.g. a spouse or other 'mature' relative who has a clean driving record irrespective that they may never actually drive your car. -
Pointless U-turns 26 Feb 2007 (Forum)
I don't think they ought to do these things, I just don't mind as much as some other people seem to when they do. There are two things I particularly dislike though. One is parking a single car in the middle of a two-car space in a parking bay just because it's easy and the driver doesn't care about other people's convenience. The other is making a gratuitous u-turn in traffic, holding everyone up and causing tension, when it would be much easier and just as quick to drive round the block. -
Mobility scooters. 18 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Now to get to the point, I have noticed to my horror that some users of mobilty scooters actualy treat them like cars, driving on the road and even moving to the centre of the road to turn right. I have witnessed this happening in my own town despite all the pavements being ramped. Today saw one user crossing a busy junction where it is impossible to see what is coming from the left due to the traffic coming from out of the old medievel walled town (I would normaly wait until the last car has gone through the the tunnel from the right). -
Garage in Southport - recommendations? 13 Feb 2007 (Forum)
I'm not a Southport local so don't know who is good or bad so can someone please recommend a small, friendly and cheap place to fix my faithful old car? Someone that could supply the brakes & CV Boot as well as fit them would be good, the tyres I can get from blackcircles.co.uk no problem.. All help gratefully received. Fastlass -
blast from the past 12 Feb 2007 (Forum)
My car was in being serviced today and I got a courtesy vehicle. It was a Mazda Courier crew cab pickup. Looked as if it was about 10 years old but I was quite pleasantly surprised by it. It had auto, air, and a basic but reasonable radio. -

VW Lupo 1.4 misfire 8 Jan 2007 (Forum)
A couple of days later, the engine symbol lit up (" Exhaust Emission warning lamp"); the engine is now missing on a cylinder. It has only been driven a couple of miles like that. I have put new leads on the car, and have also tried changing the coil pack with one that was known to be ok (from our other 1.0 Lupo - same coil pack on both engines), but the problem persists. I've not yet checked the plugs (tools and car in different places) but as they were changed at the last service (Bosch) and are only 2000 miles old, they shouldn't be the problem. -
Visiting BCA Tomorrow - Advice needed 18 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Hi, I am visiting an auction tomorrow and its been a while since I bought at auction (5yrs) and I am a little rusty regarding what goes on, - so I would be extremley greatful if someone could awnser a few queries I have: - When a car is stated as being VAT qualifying ( its 3yrs old, 25k miles) is this incuded in the hammer price or added on top when time comes to pay? - I have to pay 10% deposit on the vehicle at the rostrum - thats fine but as I do not want to carry large amounts of cash around is it possible to leave the car overnight and return the next day to settle the final bill - (with a bankers draft for example) or do i have to settle the bill there and then? -
Battery boiling - damage caused? 8 Sep 2006 (Forum)
My question - what else should I be pushing to have checked or changed? What else could have been damaged by the over-volting or the fumes? The car is only 8 months old and I'm planning to keep it long term (>200k miles). It's a Japanese 2.2 common rail diesel. Cheers for your thoughts. Gord. -
I like my Audi, do I need help?! 25 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Reverse is a bit jerky, and I am still not used to the lag when you press the throttle in "D", but the whole car just makes me smile. Is there something wrong with me? Am I getting old, or am I just a pretentious "secretary wannabe"? : ) Discuss! -
Air Con Recharge 28 Jul 2006 (Forum)
To what extent does the gas get contaminated as it "in use" in the vehicle? Would I not now have a cocktail of crap from all the other cars he has worked on? Regardless of this, the cabin is now much cooler than before so I am quite happy!! Almost a license to print money selling me back my old gas like that - makes me think of the chocolate biscuit factoty from Bagpuss!!! -
Volvo Auction Price Please 14 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Due to my current problems with the Pug (see the thread in the Technical Forum) I've been offered another car as an option. If I want it I need to make an offer, otherwise it goes to auction. Can someone tell me what the following is worth at auction please? Also what the work would cost to get done. Volvo V40 'Classic' '03 Reg 1.9 Diesel 'S' 115BHP 122,000 miles Full Volvo Service Handbook It needs the following work: New discs & pads all round New headlight New drivers seatbelt. 125k Service It was my old company car - I've since left the firm but am still friends with the fleet manager, so that's how I know the miles are mainly motorway, and about the repairs. -
where to get wheel bearing replaced 19 May 2006 (Forum)
I tried going to a Nationwide autocentre, but they claimed no experience of dealing with such a modern car, and would have to call me back!!! It's a 7 year old car, nothing new... I need to get this sorted before a long motorway trip on weekend. Any advice welcome. If no luck today, will have to take back to Lexus then.. -
Heavy bill! 10 May 2006 (Forum)
m told that the highest priority items are the first 3 items, with the remaining 2 being less urgent. Are these reasonable costs, or am I being ripped off? It is an old car, and parts wear out, but I do want to check that I?m not being taken for a ride. Any advice appreciated. -
Volkswagen Golf III (1992 - 1997) - 96 1.6 new battery drained. 15 Apr 2006 (Forum)
Hi all, Just got back from a long working holiday(3 months), on my return the battery on my car was dead so I re-charged it, having done this the battery lasted a few hours and died, I thought the battery was dodgy as it is over 3 years old so I bought a new one, but the new battery did exactly the same and drained overnight. -
Insurance - do they make it up! 29 Mar 2006 (Forum)
My parents are going away this weekend and as they are flying from an airport near us are leaving my mum's 5 year old Fiesta at our house. My mum rang her insurance to put me on her insurance so my wife could use my car. They initially quoted about £20 - £10 to add and £10 admin. When she called back with a bit more info this had increased to £65 for one week's cover.
