  • '99 Focus 2.0 Coolant Loss 27 Jul 2006 (Forum)
Hi I have noticed that my coolant has dropped halfway between min and max over the last month, and there appears to be fresh fluid from a pump next to the auxilliary drive belt, just above the A/C compressor pump, is this the water pump?, and is this the most likely cause of gradual loss? can't see any other leaks from the hoses running to / from the coolant reservoir? any ideas what this sort of job will cost, this car is becoming a real pain. Thanks in advance Pete.

  • Best new car for £5000? 18 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Her 1993 Metro is close to expiry and her children (including my wife) want to club in £1250 each to buy her a new car. She lives in Farnham, has a small garage and only uses the car around town with an occassional run up to Oxford. Max mileage 4000 per year. She has never had a new car and the family would like to get her something reliable and with PAS. Any ideas? Thanks
  • Deals On Wheels 5 Jun 2006 (Forum)
She offered the prospective buyer a test drive without checking for insurance, in fact the buyers Daughter drove the car and I doubt the young driver has DOC. The Mother after the test drive also pointed out she would discount the car as the Tax had run out. So no insurance and no tax. Great !! and the TV program allowed that to happen. DOOOOOHH. Regards Peter

  • My 309 diesel what to do. 16 May 2006 (Forum)
It's done 218000 miles and it's time for another timing belt change, but perhaps I should get rid of it. It runs fine no major faults. It has never had a clutch change though and the alternator's done about 140,000 miles, the water pump about 90,000 miles. There could be expensive jobs approaching this year and therefore it really isn't worth spending spending on it.
  • Lexus IS250/220D (2005 - ) - diesel Urban MPG 15 Apr 2006 (Forum)
The salesman told me that the car had only been driven in town I noted that the trip computer shows the average mpg as 24 since new and 23 since re fuel. This seems quite low for a diesel or will it improve as the car is run in. Lexus claim a much higher urban MPG Any experience or comments thanks alan
  • Pug406 HDi Fuel Pump 16 Mar 2006 (Forum)
My 406 has started making a low 'brrrrrrr' noise which seems to come from the fuel pump on the engine. It started intermittently but now seems to do it all the time, but the car runs fine. Any clues as to it's cause? Is it likely to be a sign of internal damage - cue big bills? I notice there's a drain plug on the pump, would it be worth draining and refilling or should I leave it alone?
  • Radiator leak - Citroen ZX TD 7 Mar 2006 (Forum)
My ZX has developed a leak in the radiator this morning. The rad was replaced about 18 months ago so I'm not too happy - it's run on the correct antifreeze, changed at two-year intervals so it shouldn't have corroded away. A new rad is £95 min, and i think that there may be a slight leak in the heater matrix too, so I want to try a leak sealer before I go to a greater expense.
  • Nissan Almera trip computer 7 Mar 2006 (Forum)
.-. It usually starts displaying numbers within a mile or so. The miles are accumulating, as is the running time. Interestingly the remaining range has increased from 328 miles at reset to 333 now. Perhaps it's producing its own petrol inside the tank, and I need to remove the filler cap to let some out!
  • Corsa Under Engine Panels 1 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Some recent time spent under the Corssa's run by my son & daughter led me to thinkning.. The 1.0 has a panel (About a foot by a foot shaped) fixed under the engine near the wheel, so does the 1.4 but . . . The 1.0 has it on the near side and the 1.4 on the off side.
  • Tough reliable car suggestions. 27 Feb 2006 (Forum)
I've set myself a budget of £1500 (anything way under will do) for a car that fits these requirements: - Must be pretty reliable. - Easy to repair (spares easy to source, etc.). - Have strong running gear so can handle poor roads. - Not be a proper off-roader (i.e no landrovers, landcruisers), but be a 'normal' car (though having 4wd would be fine). - Mid to largish size. - Preferably not a 'glamourous' badge
  • Changing car - what would you do? 24 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Car tax is due on March 1st on my trade in, which is not a problem as I will cash it in when I trade the car It's also due a service around mid March in order to keep the 3 yr warranty running. What would you do? service it, or not bother?
  • Fast idling post HG replacement. (Polo) 24 Feb 2006 (Forum)
m aware, all connections/pipes are installed securely, so could it be either valve or ignition timing? The car is running better than it ever has before, with a smoother idle and better performance (just in case that helps)
  • Upgrading car audio - difficult for DIY? 6 Feb 2006 (Forum)
How difficult is it to upgrade car audio ? Not the unit itself so much, but rather the speakers, and in the case of my Octavia, running extra wires to the rear for the speakers (seem to be some mount points under the rear parcel-shelf). The speaker driver-units in my Octavia must have cost about 50p by the sound of them - rather tinny !
  • 1999 - 206xs 2 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Bought this car recently and it runs strong and it appears(ed) to be a bargain. Noticed however that on starting from cold there is a rumble/squeal (squeal sounds like a fan belt but its not) that goes away if i depress the clutch even slightly.
  • Peugeot 306 Eng Mangmnt Unit 12 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Hi guys, I have a Peugeot 306 petrol saloon, 1999 on T plate. The car does not want to tick over on idle. In gear & running, it's fine. The AA said that the Engine Management Unit needs repair or replacing. My Peugeot dealer has quoted me £886 to replace the EMU - Please confirm if this seems about OK or are the boys in blue boiler suits taking financial advantage ?
  • Omega ('97) Rough Idle 4 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Help! My local private hire chappie runs a 2.0 (?) Omega, and has spent much money on (not) sorting out a rough idle problem. It has been to a local Vaux. indie, plus had diagnostics on it, as well as a new air valve. No joy. It ticks over like a Wright Cyclone radial engine (as in DC-3) on startup.
  • Computer Related Questions - Volume 77 19 Dec 2005 (Forum)
I've just obtained a 2nd hand computer running Windows 98. When I try to open a JPEG, it opens it with Internet Explorer. It refused to open it with Paint, and there doesn't seem to be a Windows Picture Viewer (or Picture and Fax Viewer). Right-clicking on the jpeg offers the option of "open" but not "open with".
  • Petrol Inyer Diesel 19 Dec 2005 (Forum)
There's an RAC ad that warns not to even start your car if you accidently put unleaded in you diesel car, but it doesn't tell you why or how your car would run if you did drive off and goes on to warn you of horrific costs for repairs. I wonder if they are being a bit alarmist here. I would have thought that it depends on what percentage of petrol you have mixed in the diesel already in the tank, but I'm not an expert on the matter.
