  I went back the next morning to find the new tyre already on the rim I had left with them and balanced and they readily changed the oil using my filter. I asked how easy it was to change the filter. Come and have a look they said. So I did. Easy peasy is the answer. In the under body tray is a flap that says 'oil change here'.

  I returned to the place which had done the previous oil change and to cut a long story short the area manager sent me a fax stating that he accepted the threads could have been damaged when they changed the oil but similarly the second garage could have done the damage when attempting to undo the plug.

  The time has come again where my sump is full to the brim, and requires an oil change. It seems like only yesterday that I had the last change carried out (oh it was!) Does anyone know of a cheap source for engine oil, best I've found is £54.00 for 5l and with the filter just under a tenner I might just as well pay the dealer £90.00 to do it for me.

  I bought an S plate 1.9TD Volvo S40 today, its got 114k on the clock and it needs service. I'm planning to do it all myself with the help of a mechanic friend. I need to change the oil in the gearbox (its manual) because it feels stiff when changing gears. Would you please let me know what engine oil shall i use to get the best possible MPG and what oil shall I use for gearbox?

  I am thinking to switch to Tesco's but is there any different between the brands? The viscosity is the same, just thought it might save me few bobs as I am changing oil 3 times a year. Anyone used Tesco?s own brand?

  My Seicento sporting is just about due its first service, and I am considering having the gearbox oil changed, as per HJs recommendation. Is it worthwhile going for Mobil 1 or similar? Gear change is sightly notchy, particularly 2nd. I regularly look at a forum for air-cooled BMW bikes, and general consensus is that fully synthetic transmission oil makes an enormous difference.

  Another 6k has gone by and another oil change due on my 1.9TD Xsara. Last time had local garage do it for 20 quid, but think they used cheapy oil. Is it worth spending 20 quid on the fully synthetic oil like Mobil 1 and so on? They promise improved fuel economy and quieter running.

  However, this was not specific to this vehicle, it was a general finding. The remedy to this was to have more frequent oil changes ie 6,000mls instead of the recommended 12,000mls. Has anyone had ant experience or knowledge of this?

  Hi, I have a vw polo, 1.4, auto, w reg, 60k. Since I've owed it, I've been using 10w40 semi synthetic oil (as recommended), its now time to change the oil again and I've been looking at various oil manufactures websites for recommendations, I'm getting a vast array of recommended grades of oil, from 5w30 fully synthetic, 15w40 to 15w50 and of course 10w40 semi synthetic..... and now I'm confused which ones really are accurate.

  Last year when I wanted a cheapo £20 oil & filter change I called a local branch (1) of a well known chain offering this service. "Nah! mate, the pump we use for the oil's broken. Nah - dunno when it's gonna be fixed." I found a second branch (2) who reluctantly insisted I be booked-in for a Tue/Wed/Thu morning only.

  I noticed that Halfords have their own brand oil on special offer, five litres of 10/40 SL spec semi-synthetic for £15.99. Seems a reasonable price for average cars. May buy a couple for the next 6 month oil changes. Does anyone know of a better deal?

  HI Has anybody changed the oil on the 200 compressor engine..if so where have merc hidden the oil filter. On all the old models it was in front of the block in a cartridge form thanks for any help alan They did a good job hiding the filter on the old 190!

  Had oil and filter changed at a national outlet in september,couple of weeks later checked oil and was halfway on dipstick.Bought a litre bottle of magnet 5/30 which national had put in and topped back up, each time iv checked oil iv had to top up today i topped up again looked at bottle and noticed iv used 750ml (3/4) litres.

  Its V plate 1.5 and has got 38k on the clock with Mazda dealer history stamps untill 23k miles. I changed the radiator water the other day and I'm going to change the oil and oil filter. Is there anything else I should do to make sure it stays as reliable as they're meant to be? I've got geniune Mazda oil filter (cost me only £6) and I'm going to get Magnatec 10w/40 oil unless there's something better you could recommend?

  I don't see Auto Transmission Oil and Filter change in the Service schedule. I'm coming up to 38k miles and it's not there to be checked in the Services. - How often should these be changed? 39k mile? - Have these been added to the Service Schedule since the service book was printed/the car was manufactured?

  I've always had my oil & filter changed at Halfords with Magnatec 10-40 in my old petrol vectra and its been fine, but i now have a vectra 2.0 Dti and i intend changing the oil every 5000 mls so not sticking with the flexi service, going onto eco-service ( its a Vectra C 03 by the way ) the thing is Magnatec 10-40 normal oil states its a A3/B3 would this be ok for my diesel.
