  Sorry if this is an old chesnut, but as a newish member haven't seen it come up yet. My Volvo 740 purchased in 1998 is still on the battery I aquired it with. The friend I bought it off didn't fit it, so battery must be at least eight years old, only time it has failed to start car was once when I topped it up, guess I diluted the volts.

  I have used the car since during days and nights and the battery seems to be getting a charge. Today (29th april) after work, same thing happened...the battery was flat again. Another boost got me going and again, the battery got a good charge on my way home.

  Think about it, and he's right. I gave this advice to a friend at the weekend, whose car has a poorly accessible battery. A few minutes later, when, with cold and numb fingers, the ratchet handle was dropped, and free-wheeled down to touch against the bulkhead whilst still connected to the positive post, he was somewhat grateful not to have an exploding battery, or fire, on his hands!

  I have, which apart from an excellent driving position and ease of entry for an 18 stone, 6ft 2" person with athritic left knee, what must be one of Britains poorest made vehicles - a 1986 Landrover Discovery. As a result of a flat battery in Nov 98 Garage diagnosed a faulty alternator and replaced. This did no good and in Jan 99 had to buy a HD Battery. Feb 01 battery again flat and would not hold charge. Auto Electricians checked vehicle electrical equipment and said they detected no unusual leakage while vehicle was parked.

  Many many support forums are listed with customers being told many things but not the truth. In simple terms the AGM battery needs more volts to charge and a 12 Volt battery is more or less flat at 10.5 volts getting the battery to charge needs a special charger with a recovery mode. The Fully Charged AGM battery will show 13 + Volts.

  Lately I have had a couple of problems with my C3. Just after Christmas the battery warning light came on, so I had a new battery fitted. However, about a week later the warning light came back on, so I returned to the garage and they replaced the battery again. They ran a check on the first replacement battery and told me that it checked out fine and that the alternator was OK too.

  I am considering fitting a new alternator drive belt, then cleaning up battery terminals before looking at the battery. If you have a voltmeter can you test battery and alternator function by putting it across the terminals and it should be 12 volts or more as the engine increases?

I have been keeping this car down south at my MinL?s and on a recent visit the battery was completely fault ( five years old ) I charged the battery and eventually it fired up with no errors but the battery would not hold it?s charge so popped into a local garage and had a new battery Exide 096 fitted.

  Hello all, I didn't use my Dacia Sandero for a few days over the sub zero temperatures and first thing I noticed when getting in car was it says "battery now in stand by mode" and it still keeps popping up. Then when I stop at lights etc it says "priority battery charge"? What's going on anyone know? Is it something worry about? Cars only 11 month old brand new.

  just replaced thermostat housing.  was tightening bolts on coil pack when wrench touched positive battery terminal and sparks flew. when ignition switched on all lights on dash come on but engine will not turn over - no noise - nothing. I have never done this before and would normally disconnect battery when working on engine.

    Some years ago I used a (modified for positive earth) solar car battery charger on a sixties’ classic. This connected to the cigar lighter that was on a fused circuit. I am now thinking of using one on a “future” classic as the alarm, etc. drain the battery when standing.

  Hi, I'm looking to scrap my 2005 Ford Ka as it needs too many repairs- most recently it needs a new alternator. I've been quoted around £35 to pick up and scrap the car. However, the battery in the car is brand new and hardly been used. Is it possible to get more than £35 for the car and is the battery worth removing and keeping as its was only fitted three weeks ago? Thanks!
