  • Firework damage to car - neigbour to pa? 19 Jan 2006 (Forum)
This is going to have to be repaired, and on her 18mth old metallic black car, it aint going to be cheap. There's no doubt in my mind that the damage was caused by a rocket, several of which landed amongst our cars after a neighbours Nov 5th party. I still have the offending items and they fit the dent perfectly, and explain why the paint in the dent is undamaged (although a surprising dent from a cardboard tube).
  • Balloon in car 6 Sep 2004 (Forum)
I accelerated out of the car park and the balloons swept forwards. I hit the brakes, and they went backwards. Round the right hand bend of roundabouts, they crushed themselves over to the right of the car and on left hand bends, they went the other way.
  • Unwanted Subarus? 8 Feb 2004 (Forum)
I was absolutely staggered to see many of the car we had seen last summer (June/July) still up for sale!. We are not talking about 'old nails' here, but very tidy Legacy saloons with 15-40k mileages and either just in, or just out, of warranty. One car we looked at (2000 reg., a 2.5GX with aircon etc and about 25k on it) was up at £8.5k in the summer and is still there now at £7.5k Why are these excellent cars seemingly so unloved?
  • Insurance groups + which car? 11 Jan 2004 (Forum)
I need a second car following an office relocation (budget up to 8K). Three questions; 1) Is there a site where I can see in advance what insurance groups cars are normally allocated to? As I may have to re-start with no NCB, iinsurance will be a significant cost (given my inner-London, no-garage address) 2) The car will have lots of short start-stop runs from cold, probably averaging 50 miles per day.
  • Baby dies in hot car 5 Feb 2003 (Forum)
How in God's name did anybody let this woman look after children? A two-year-old girl has died after being left in a locked car in the sun while her caregiver went shopping. The child, whose name has not been made public, was declared dead on arrival at Garden City Clinic in Johannesburg on Monday afternoon - when temperatures reached 30°C - after she was rushed there by staff from Jumbo Cash & Carry.
  • When does a good car die? 18 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Has anyone got any rules of thumb for deciding when 'old faithful' goes to the scrappie? I've got a 1987 Saab 9000i which has given 8 years of absolutely faithful service, and has been the most reliable & cost-free car I've ever had. But.....she has now done 195,000 miles.
  • Used car prices 7 Oct 2001 (Forum)
Also the mother in law has on old Polo coupe on a B plate with less than 30K on it, again owned from new, 4 speed box, serviced every 12 months or so no rust (that can be seen) any ideas on a price for this? She is also looking for a new smaller car than the Golf they currently have (they are a VW family).
  • Is my car burning oil? 26 Jul 2001 (Forum)
I drive an old 90k mile '88 VW Jetta 16v. I have had the car two years. Occasionaly there is visable blue smoke from the exhaust as the engine is started. I put this down to oil leaking into the metering head via the breather pipe.
  • What used family car? Too much choice is a curse.. 29 Oct 2020 (Forum)
If I go Diesel, fear the future is now looking bright and I'm likely to be in the same situation I’m in now, in another 4-5yrs?    Current cars I'm considering (all 2-3 yrs old); ·         USED Skoda Superb TSI 1.5 or 2.0 (S E L Executive or Sport line) – o    Pro: Passenger and boot space enormous, good standard kit, like the Sportline look; o    Con; Rare to find 1.5 Sportline used, top of budget for nearly new model, will I be mistaken for a taxi driver!
  • 2008 Vauxhall Astra Life Auto - Vauxhall Astra Sounds 26 Jun 2024 (Forum)
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1KUA8MrGjmLl79rZromyO9bCvkHjkyr2p/view?usp=drive_link   This video I suppose is just for additional context. The car is now 16 years old and has only done 53000 miles so I am a touch worried about the belt. I have no issues getting parts replaced, I just don't want it to sneak up on me  https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Phd_aUnH9R4VRWuzIyyKYYeF5XuuP9gY/view?
  • Any - Lease or Buy 10 Aug 2023 (Forum)
I bought my Focus two years ago when it was two years old. I've gone off it, and want a change. According to a certain car buyer that give you a valuation, It's worth £10k. I paid nearly £17,000 for it. I've done average miles in two years.
  • Ford Focus 1.6 auto. - Resale value 8 Jun 2022 (Forum)
It has been a long time since I bought a car, 17 years actually. My last 4 vehicles were bought at auction but the general public are no longer allowed into BCA and Manheim. I do realise car prices have increased since C19. I have been looking at Honda Jazz on Autotrader and other sites and noticed their resale price at 3 years old is only about 8-9% below what it cost brand new, that surprised me.
  • Peugeot 207 - Braking fault 18 Feb 2021 (Forum)
Hi guys , So I’ve had a 207 . 2007 plate running fine had ABS braking system faulty continued to use until garage had space, got told possibly 2 sensors gone wrong but it’s being told faulty information from the abs computer or module and only way was to send off get checked to see if repairable. I decided to not go ahead given the car value and to sell it off , however soon as I picked it up the engine light was on , the power steering has gone. Took back had a look and now even has abs communication error. Obviously it’s an old car etc I’m just not sure if and how are there more faults really?
  • Vauxhall Astra self service? - Astra K servicing 26 Aug 2020 (Forum)
When a garage wants £100+ for £20 worth of oil I baulk at it on a minor service. If I keep the car long term, which I tend to, it won't make any difference. This is my first reasonably new car. Happy to hear anyone's thoughts.
  • Skoda Supreb 69 Plate - Trim issues 9 Mar 2020 (Forum)
Shocking build quality I am really disappointed as I love the car big and comfy but Skoda say there is only a 3 month warranty on trim parts. Anything else is good will. It’s a £36k car how on Earth can the warranty be only 3 months? I’ve emailed the CEO and the dealer and await the response.

  • Ford Focus TDCi - Ford Focus 2010 TDCi 1.6l Turbo Issues 3 Sep 2018 (Forum)
All connectors are fine, changed Egr valve, checked turbo fine, cleaned waste gate, they've even been in touch with Ford Dealer and they say to check all that he's done..... question is do i try a new turbo? the car has done 63k miles so pretty good for a 5 year old diesel (or so i'm told) any advise on the problem would be much appreciated. • Any - New MOT – May 2018 7 May 2018 (Forum)
I read an article that said that if your car failed the MOT after introduction of the revised MOT in two weeks you will not be able to drive it away for any reason whatsoever even if there is a month on the old certificate. Does this mean that you cannot drive it either home or to another garage for repair, even if only a short distance is involved?
  • Audi A3 - Audi Warranty 5 Apr 2018 (Forum)
Hi I have an Audi A3, bought as an ex-demo from the dealer, currently 2.5 years old. To the rear bumper, the paint is starting to peel, and there is faint evidence of a previous repair. Dealer has confirmed verbally that when the car arrived new with them, it had damage to this area and that this was repaired by them at that point.
  • MINI Countryman cooper D 4WD - Transfer box 11 Jan 2018 (Forum)
Picking up on HJ reply today, if it were my car with 28k miles and less than 4 years old I would be seriously unhappy faced with a bill of £2114 from Mini dealer. HJ answer whilst describing a possible cause was at best unhelpful.   Is there a warning in the vehicle handbook  that disparity of tyre tread can cause a costly problem?
