  • Espace air-con. 12 Jul 2001 (Forum)
When asked if it would cost more than £30 to fix (sort of) I replied with the potential for huge bills on this. I'll just leave it broken was the reply, a very common one for a 5yr old car with air-con problems. This is one particularly for Dave N, any likely causes of faults on this age of Espace? Any particular air-con firms in Cambs that would be good to look at this? I have read the HJ faq on this and noted the advised contacts there.
  • Economy in tow cars and necessary licenses 23 Aug 2020 (Forum)
There's also the old ML320 but I'm not sure on economy. A Shogun LWB has a braked towing weight of 3,200kg and the ML320 would be 3,365kg IIRC. This would be fine as I could downplate a 3.5 ton trailer to that weight and still be able to tow pretty heavy cars.
  • Mini Cooper - Blue Smoke from exhaust 10 Mar 2022 (Forum)
Its a 13 year old car so we should expect some smoke etc, but with it being blue its obvious what the fault is.   For £3k, the car is immaculate and finding something similar is difficult.  It passed an MOT last week, so is good for 12 months!
  • Ford Focua Combi 2008 - Esp problems 22 Apr 2017 (Forum)

  • Honest John's Motoring Agony Column 02-07-2016 Part 1 4 Jul 2016 (Forum)
Dear John, I've just read PI's comments about credit hire. My car was shunted in the rear before Christmas and the other driver admitted liability. My insurers put me onto an accident management company who offered me a credit-hire car. I refused as: 1) it might well be seen as betterment so I'd have to pay; 2) I object on moral grounds to this costly way of keeping me mobile and hiking everyone's premiums; 3) I might feel upset if and when my 12 year-old car came back and I had to drive that again!
  • What car should I buy? 4 Aug 2011 (Forum)
Our budget is £15-18k - obviously spending less is nice, but willing to spend top end of budget for something special. Looking at used cars 1-2yrs old, low mileage - or New if the right car is in our budget. Preferably diesel (doing c15k miles a yr, av. journey 30miles a time) but not ruling out petrol. Most recently we've looked at the new Ford Focus Zetec, 1.6 diesel, and have a test drive arranged - just not sure if this is the best way to spend that much money?!
  • any - Driving instructor quality 8 Mar 2011 (Forum)
Walking along a side street popular with driving schools for teaching 3 point turns, reverse parking etc, , I saw a learner draw up alongside a parked car, evidently to learn reverse parking. The problem was, as she had left a good 5 feet between the left of her car and a parked car (no.1), she had effectively blocked the road, as there was a parked car (no 2)  on the other side of the road.
  • Honda Jazz - Honda Jazz automatic making an odd noise 13 Nov 2010 (Forum)
I have a 5 year old Honda Jazz, which has done 37k miles.   Within the last 2-3 weeks I've noticed a slightly odd noise when starting the car up. It also is audible when at traffic lights, it seems to only be obvious when starting the car up having not used it for a few days.
  • Merc B class - Manual -v- Automatic, Diesel -v- Petrol 7 Aug 2010 (Forum)
We’ve tried some cars and read up on others and the only one still In the frame to replace my wife's 7 year old Toyota Corolla Verso is the B class Merc despite it being a bit expensive. We had thought we wanted a manual petrol car.
  • Advice re Cat D write off please 30 Jul 2010 (Forum)
Hi, Have just been told that my old Honda is being written of as a Cat D, following my being hit in the rear. Have been offered £500 which I feel is fair considering the age and condition of the car pre accident. I am probably going to buy the car back as I really need a car for work and it passed an MOT whilst waiting to go for repair so am not concerned about it's safety.
  • Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - 06 1.6 Advice please on buying car ? 27 May 2009 (Forum)
As my budget is £5000 plus my 1999 T reg Ford Focus they said that they would give me £1200 for my old car which would reduce the price to £5299. I then managed to get the price down to exactly £5000. However I do have doubts about something. The car has had 1 lady owner and when I asked the sales man about service history he said that it had been serviced in 07 and in 09.
  • Volkswagen Beetle (1998 - ) - do I need to disconnect battery whilst charging ? 30 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Morning All, With a view to keeping the (fairly old) battery on my car in a decent state of charge over the winter, I purchased a small battery charger last night. Had a look through the instructions and all the usual blurb about checking water levels and topping up with distilled water was there, together with the need to remove the top/caps on the battetry to allow gases to escape whilst charging.
  • Retirement tactics 7 Apr 2008 (Forum)
I'm a complete ignoramus on cars, but John has often referred in complimentary fashion to the new Panda with the 1.3 multijet engine. I have very fond memories of driving an old Panda in years gone by, and I know it's a completely different car, but does anyone have any observations?
  • Buying a C3 Pluriel 17 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Girlfriend has decided she really wants a Citroen C3 Pluriel... i'm not too sure as I have heard the stories about leaking roofs.... Car is on Autotrader @ £6200 but in the pics you can see a sign for £6500..... Just checked parkers and it gives a price for that age car of £5320 based on 20,000 for a 2004 (53) car. Now give that its a 53 so will have been early 2004, its now over 3 years old, so shouldn't they be pricing it based on 30,000 not 20k?
  • Disappointing Toyota 8 Feb 2007 (Forum)
I've been running an 1.8 04 Toyota Avensis for a year now. I deliberately bought a jap car after all the reliability issues and ropey build quality I had with my last two cars (Ford and Vauxhall). However although I like the car it seems to be a bigger lemon than my old Omega - which is fairly suprising.
  • Shogun Pinin rust issues 7 Jan 2007 (Forum)
It hasnt put her off the car, but she does want to know where they rust and if by 5 years old, any serious rust issues will have shown themselves? The seams werent soft at all and it looked like just minor surface corrosion, but when you read they have a known problem, seems worth asking.
  • Bought a Mondeo - No service book advice 17 Oct 2006 (Forum)
I have recently bought a '05 Mondeo tdci 130 zetec from a well known car supermarket. Very nice car. Only trouble is once I got over the excitement of a newish car I realised that I had only been given one key and no service book. It had done 13,500 miles and was 14 months old.
  • How much to spend on a first time driver 20 Sep 2006 (Forum)
Hi My missus is taking driving lessons and is progressing alot better than I thought she would, so I am expecting that I will have to fork out for a car in the not to distant future. Now my problem is I know most people say get an old banger if its her first car cos she will probably crash it, and she can use the bangeer to get experience before getting her a proper car.......but if she does have a crash I don't want her to be in some tin can!
  • Allergic to Modern Cars 14 Sep 2006 (Forum)
However, I CAN drive old, basic diesels - MK1 mondeos are a firm favourite. However, as these are now hard to come by I'm wondering what the least complicated new-ish car might be - no ECU ETC. To be like this is very debilitating .... so, I thought it was worth a stab to pose the question on here.
