Buying a VERY low mileage Focus (07 plate) 27 Apr 2009 (Forum)
When I got back from the test drive I reversed back into a parking space at the dealer and it felt like I was about to stall it. 2. When I parked up and the engine was running idle it made a whining noise. I blipped the accelerator and the noise went only to return 15 seconds later or so. -
Hit & run - what is the likely outcome? 27 Mar 2009 (Forum)
He looked so scared I didn't have the heart to give him a good old rant, but thanked him for owning up - albiet a bit late. He did at one point hint that he may not actually be insured himself to drive that car..... what should I do? Tell my insurance company this little nugget? If the car he was driving has insurance but the lad is not entitled to drive it, does that mean that I will not get a payout from them? -
BMW 5-Series E39 (1996 - 2003) - 98 2.0 steptronic auto gearbox failing in low gear 10 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Am I ok to carry on driving it? We can do some diy maintenance ourselves, but if you know of a Yorkshire based specialist who might be able to help that would be useful. Many thanks for your advice, I love this car and want to repair it if possible. -
New driving licence 16 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Because of my age I have just had to renew my driving license. I took out my first about 1958, and since then have two speeding convictions, one for doing 48mph between Whitefield and Bury in 1959 (at 01:00 in the morning, followed by a policeman in a Humber Hawk !) -
Driving in Dumfries & Galloway. 27 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Just be ready to give way to anything on the roads around you. As for when you actually get in to Galloway - this is a whole new driving experience to behold in itself! Speed minus is a serious understatement - no one is in a hurry to get anywhere. Wigtown we saw not only double but even triple parking with people just stopping their vehicles (anywhere) to talk to people and even on on A roads as they pass each other, with little or no consideration for anything or one else around - they pull up, park, turn, pull out in front of you, u turn (even tractors....) with no form or warning or use of indicators and in 7 days, 7 whole days we saw one solitary police man, in his little Skoda car - and he was directing traffic in and around the meat market at Newton Stewart! -
Why stereotype us by the make of car we drive? 12 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Following on from some of the questions raised in the Badge snobbery V inverted badge snobbery thread, I've often wondered why assumptions are made of people by the type of car people drive. You hear phrases like "Typical xxx (insert offending make of car) driver" both on this forum and in general. Often maligned are BMW drivers, but what makes a BMW driver? Many years ago I bought myself a two year old 318. -
Renault Twingo (1995 - 2005) - 94 1.3 Wanted : Cross over Break-Linkage !!! 6 Sep 2008 (Forum)
I think many models have such a linkage (you will know that better than me...) & I also think the Break-Linkages are not very popular/ much asked for - so they won't be expensive...... im looking for a simple but strong bolt-on linkage of a right hand drive car with the master cylinder on the left side... surely i have to customise this linkage because my custom projekt was never sold in a right hand drive version - its a Renault Twingo... I hope someone can help me, give me a hint or whatever... ...to big and bulky is not the problem - what does not fit is made to fit ! -
Vauxhall Vectra B facelift (1999 - 2002) - 1999 1.8 Missing whilst revving 28 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Anyway, the trouble i'm having is, that when i'm in neutrel and revving the car around 2k revs, it seems to be missing. The EML is on, but the car still drives pretty good, no missing whilst driving, lurching etc. Only seems to miss whilst revving in neutrel! I've read loads of threads and posts about re-earthing the maf etc, about egr valves, but both of these seem to be working fine. -
Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 1996 1.3 Idler Valve/revving problems 10 Jul 2008 (Forum)
This has scared me somewhat and I am nervous of trying to drive home tonight in case this all means the accelerator is getting stuck, not just the idler valve faulty again. Any thoughts from anyone? Apologies for the lack of techno speak! Do I need to get this to a garage and should I even be driving it?! -
Ford Mondeo IV (2007 - ) - I'm impressed. 11 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Today I went along to a showroom near Dublin and I sat in the driving seat of the new Ford Mondeo for the first time. Wow,that car truly is quality!! The driving seat is so comfortable and all the knobs seem to be in the right place. The car seems extremely well put together and the dashboard materials etc seemed to be of a high standard. -
Citroen C5 (2001 - 2008) - 2.0 16V Fuel Economy 18 Feb 2008 (Forum)
I have only done about 100 Miles but fuel economy seems lower than i thought at about 28 MPG. My drive to work of 15 miles each way is country roads and i hardly ever sit in traffic. I have so far used a very light foot and am not driving really hard. I have checked the air filter and it is a little dirty but nothing excessive. -
Fuel efficiency - when to switch 25 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Bearing in mind that I work contracts, and the contract is likely to last about 12 months, maybe a little longer, and my likely next contract would be in London, where I wouldn't need the car. Any thoughts, and car suggestions? The only other complication is that the Mrs. is taking her driving test (end of Feb), and would prefer not to haul around a large exec saloon, but I'm not sure there's much we can do about that as it would be madness to buy a second car and for me to drive the fuel-hungry Volvo 70 miles/day while she kept the less thirsty car for occasional trips to the supermarket. -
Jaguar X-Type (2001 - 2009) - manual or auto? 11 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Hello All, Vaguely thinking of changing the Mondeo, what is putting me off is that the p-ex price is not great, the car it is worth more to me that I am likely to get for it, though I am not up for selling it privately, I would rather drive in one car and drive out another. While I am mulling that over I have another quandary, I am (again vaguely) thinking of an X-Type, would really quite like a 2.2d estate though I reckon the spec I want would be more than I really want to spend. -
Citroen Xsara Picasso (2000 - 2010) - The end of my dipstick has fallen off....... 22 Dec 2007 (Forum)
I was aware of the this potential problem with 1.6 HDi s (2006) but would welcome any comment Having suffered this indignity under warranty, my local main agent insisted that they have to have the vehicle to take the sump off to recover the bit. They also warned me that to drive it to them was at my own risk and that I should have it recovered on a trailer at my cost. As I was short of time (going away the following day, but not with the car), I elected to accept the risk and drive it to them. -
Speed statistics 27 Jun 2007 (Forum)
this means that 31% of UK road deaths had speed as a contributory factor (fairly sure the 2006 figures weren't widely different and note the difference from 2004 to 2005 was only 20) obviously this must also mean that 69% of road deaths did not have speed as a contributory factor then when you factor in the word 'contributory' which could mean it was not the primary issue.......and then you consider such things as: -drink driving with speed involved -drug driving with speed involved -vehicle defect with speed involved -driving recklessly/carelessly with speed involved I wonder how many of that 31% was a great deal to do with the speed. ( I do appreciate that if any of the above involves a pedestrian, than even a small amount of extra speed can mean the difference betwen life and death) This means that the current 'speed kills' campaign is a tad too simplistic isn't it. -
Police procedures 24 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Brother discovered his S Reg Vectra had a blowing exhaust today. Phoned his pal in the garage and booked it in for 2pm. On driving into the Ind Estate that the garage is in, traffic police pull him over. He tells them if its the exhaust, I am just taking it into the garage which was 200 yds away. Police check exhaust and serve him with a prohibition order telling him that he cannot drive the car in that condition even though he assures them it is already booked in and to phone them if they don't believe him. -
Diesel power - a compromise? 2 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Therefore i have been test driving the toyota auris T180 - fabulous diesel engine, crazy amounts of power, very quick, very quiet/smooth and good economy of 44mpg. Problem is i drive roughly 12-15k miles a year so not really diesel justifcation territory but would give me big fuel bills on say a golf GTI. -
Computer racing games riskier drivers 20 Mar 2007 (Forum)
"We conclude that playing computer games could provoke unsafe driving. "Road traffic practitioners should bear in mind the possibility that racing games indeed make road traffic less safe, not least because game players are mostly young adults, acknowledged as the highest accident-race group." -
Nissan Almera 1.4 knocking 18 Jul 2006 (Forum)
Almera has a knocking from the drivetrain. It sounds just like a shot CV joint (I had one go on a Cavalier) but the symptoms occur when driving in a straight line as well as going around corners. I have jacked up the car and can?t feel any play in the wheel bearings. The knocking is audible at lower speeds when accelerating or under engine braking in the first two gears upto 2500 rpm. -
The Top Gear Thread - Volume 20 15 Apr 2006 (Forum)
HJ) Most of us must envy aspects of Jeremy Clarkson's life and many will concede that he is an amusing chap who can probably drive quite well. Why, though, when driving the Bugatti Veyron recently, did he allow those repeated shots of the 'power dial' on the car's facia with the needle slamming into the stop at 1,000hp? Extremely naff in my opinion.
