Faltering Frontera 3 Mar 2005 (Forum)
My 1997 Frontera Sport has done 160,000 miles, and, despite the brickbats often thrown at this breed, has been very reliable and mostly still runs sweetly. BUT, in recent months the (regularly serviced) engine has sometimes, and increasingly, started to cut out when cool (not cold) often several miles into a run, and usually when cruising steadily with the foot just eased off the accelerator. -
Another Oil question. 1.4 Escort (92) 8 Feb 2005 (Forum)
The leaking has stopped but the oil on the dipstick is black and looking a bit thin, and smells a bit "petrolly" compared to whats in the oil can. Should i change it now, or will it last thru till october again? The engine is running fine by the way. (the change from 5w30 to 10w40 made it run noticably smoother too) cheers -
Mercedes 230 E ( W123 ) fuel pump relay 6 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Hi Everyone, I have had a problem with my Mercedes today, the first ever, where it would not start, the fuel pump ( electric ) was not running, so I took a live feed from the battery to the pump, and it started without a problem, and continued to run fine and restarted, even after I removed the improvised feed. I suspect the Fuel pump relay to be at fault, however I could not locate it anywhere, despite reference being made to it in the Workshop manual, as being on the LH Front inner wing. -
Fans and coolant on 306 13 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Hello I have a couple of questions about my 1997 306 xtdt.First is the pair of cooling fans on the rad. i tried to test them the other day by letting the car idle after a run to see if they cut in as they should, but the temp got to about 95 ish and then only the nearside one came on at very high speed. Is this right? i thought both of them should come on at the same time? -
sliding door runners - Mazda MPV 17 Aug 2004 (Forum)
The strip appears to be metal but does not seem to have a protective plastic coating so I'd thought about possibly applying some strong pvc tape for the wheels to run on hence protect the paint work. Can anyone come up with a better idea? Ta all. -
Neon new head gasket/not starting 30 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I am assured the timing has not slipped during re-asembly. Both the crank sensor and the cam sensor have been replaced but still the car fails to run. -
'00 Xsara lost power after hose replaced 17 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Is he wasting his money? I have suspicions lack of power now is because the engine's not running over-rich any more, i.e. it was the fault which was giving him the extra oomf. Any ideas? Thanks for your time. Mike Farrow -
A4 cutting out 6 Mar 2004 (Forum)
I have a problem with an a4 1.9 tdi cutting out when driven hard when the problem occurs the car will be hard started it will turn over for ages before going. the fuel filter was replaced with a new one. The history of the car is that it was originally petrol and the running gear of a tdi se was put into it. the fuel tank an d lines are the original petrol ones but appeared to be the same. the vacume module behind the drivers wheel of the petrol model was removed go it is plumbed the same as the original diesel. i am wondering if there would be a difference in the size of the fuel lines even though they appear the same. if injector cleaner or some other one of these products is added to the diesel it will run fine for the remainder of the tank. -
Mid-90's Merc E-class coupe? 20 Feb 2004 (Forum)
I'm looking to spend about £8-9k. I don't want something run-of-the-mill, I'd prefer something a bit special. My eye was recently caught by a Merc E320 coupe, 'M' reg. I see there's a good selection on Autotrader. I guess 80-90k miles will be the norm. I've heard Mercs are good for 200-300k miles, so at 80-90k it's just about run in(?). -
Astra 1.4i lack of engine power. 9 Feb 2004 (Forum)
It was underpowered before (it's only a 1.4) but now it feels like there's a 1.1 under the bonnet. There is no other problem with the engine running just a severe lack of power. before I take it back to the Vauxhall garage (reluctantly)can anyone give me any pointers that I can tell them to look at ? (settings in the ECU ?) This way I can tell them to look at specific areas, hopefully stopping them just plugging in a laptop and say, oh it's running fine. -
Astra Towbar fitting electricals 17 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Haynes manual has disappeared (gremlins at work in our household again - suspect small boy has "borrowed" it) so I can't check the diagrams, but I thought it might be easier than running it up into the light cluster. Any info appreciated. Thanks Chris TD -

The performance of the car when running is 100%, goes like hell. Its on 135K (m reg). Any other thoughts? -
Toyota Avensis Trip Computer 19 Oct 2002 (Forum)
The average indicated mpg, over a tank of full, is consistantly indicating 13% better fuel consumption than it actually is. The "Range" left to run on the remaining fuel in the tank, is out in as much as I estimate that it would run out well before the range says zero, wheras the instruction book says that there should be fuel left when it indicates zero. -
H T Leads - replacement? 20 Aug 2002 (Forum)
A friend of mine runs the same car as me 1996 VW Golf VR6 and has recently fitted new plug leads. He tells me that the car runs much better with improved throttle response and power as a result. The leads on the car are original VW leads and are marked as having a resistance of 5 K ohms. -
Metro ECU problems 29 Nov 2001 (Forum)
So a p/x ECU was fitted, and a second, and a third! Sometimes the engine would run for 40 mins or so, and once my friend actually had the car back 'repaired', it ran for a few miles, but the engine died when the car was halted at a roundabout. There has been muttering about sensors but no answers yet after 3 weeks. -
Rear wheel drive 28 Oct 2001 (Forum)
Money available is only a couple ish grand, less preferable but I'm trying to be realistic. Thoughs are for something like a Sierra 2.0 GLSi/GT/XR4i etc. which would be cheap to run/service etc. I guess a BMW 3 series is possible but may be more expensive to run? Need back seats too. Would appreciate any ideas on a suitable gem I may have overlooked! Thought about a mk2 Golf GTI 8 or 16v but it's fwd.......!! -
Spark Plug Insulation. 22 May 2001 (Forum)
Any ideas??? I'll try running a slightly hotter plug next time but I'm told this makes very little difference... -
