Market Research 8 Apr 2003 (Forum)
The oddest thing was the collection of cars I was asked about Passat Avensis Vectra A4 Mondeo and, wait for it, wait for it...Mini!? How many Minis are sold to people also looking at an Avensis. Oh. hold on, I recently thought seriously about a Cooper and actually bought a 7 yr old A6 estate. -
Yaris, Ka, Micra or Metro! 14 Dec 2002 (Forum)
I am trying to find a car to replace my wifes ageing Metro. I am considering base models of the following a new Yaris, new Ka, new Micra (old style) or a 2nd hand Metro (M reg). To me it looks quite an easy choice and I should go for the Yaris until I start considering the costs. -
Mazda 323 - Accident prone? 18 Jul 2002 (Forum)
I have been trying to buy a used Mazda 323(4-5 yrs old). So far I have seen 4 within my price range (<£4000), the first one seemed very dubious - there were misleading comments in the advert, it had French number plates, and the engine was practically new for a car that had done 52K miles. -
Tappets 18 Jul 2001 (Forum)
My German motor has done a 115k (A4 1.8 20v, 95N) great car and all that, change oil at 5k, cam belt at 40k, plugs & filters every year, etc. Follow the old HJ bible... But the engine is begining to sing like a sewing machine, well slight exageration, but certainly never 'tinkered' like this before, or not that I noticed. -
Mitsubishi Colt - car buying advice needed! 26 Aug 2015 (Forum)
some are also overpriced, for example i love the looks of suzuki swift, but for an 8-year old car, it's quite pricey! also, i'd love to get something like hyundai coupe for it's looks and reliability, but i think my hubby would be very jealous :) to be perfectly honest, common sense says we should get a smart (small, cheap to run), but we've read a lot of negative reviews - apparently the car's quite problematic... -
Struggling to choose cars for under £8.5k, family 14 Jul 2025 (Forum)
And be nice to drive on the occasional motorway trip. I did have the "German luxury" itch a few days ago and started looking at 10 year old 5 Series', but they're so gosh darn long. E Classes only come in Diesel from that age if I remember correctly, which means it's not suitable for me. And I guess the upkeep costs of these 2 cars would be far too much. -
Peugot 508 - Advice on buying a second hand Peugot 508 11 Jun 2023 (Forum)
Hi all! I'm Looking to buy a new 2nd hand car pretty desperately as my old one has kicked the bucket and I'm unable to get to work without one, I have a very tight budget (maximum £2700/£3000) but sadly have no time to save any more and can't work without one. -
11 plate Suzuki Alto 25 Apr 2023 (Forum)
A motoring miracle of sorts My old mate who is a mechanic (senior technician) at a Nissan dealers told me about a car they had in yesterday. A Suzuki Alto 96k miles on a 11 plate Yesterday was the first time in its life it had been serviced including its first oil change. -
Help me choose from these used MPV cars please :-) 1 Mar 2023 (Forum)
Hi. I am after an MPV petrol car with cavernous carrying space after seats have been folded down flat. It'll have to be an old model from 2005-ish looking at Auto Trader prices on my budget (£4,500, and prices are more ridiculous in the South West) Bearing in mind the early models I'll have to go for, which would you choose from these please? -

Used Car Selection - Input Welcome 15 Nov 2021 (Forum)
After running an old Ford for two decades have finally agreed with the family to purchase a much newer vehicle. Going from a late 90's Ford to a fairly modern car will be a welcome change. Currently looking at approved used Lexus GS\IS models that are within the current budget which is ideally no more than £26k. -
Renault Clio - New Renault Clio Iconic TCe 90 or Used Ford Fiesta 8 Sep 2021 (Forum)
From what I've seen, Ford Fiesta's seem to be the best supermini around at the moment. However, with the used car market currently being so expensive it will cost around £ 13,000 (2 years old , 21k miles). I've done some research into the cars I get discounts on through the company's affinity scheme, and a new Renault Clio Iconic TCe 90 seems to fit the bill best for me. -
At what point do you give up on a Banger? 23 Mar 2021 (Forum)
I'm not asking for specific advice, just mulling things over generally. I only learned to drive 3 years ago at 26, and have practically 0 knowledge of cars. Since then I've owned two cars that I've spent almost £3k on for repairs, services, tyres etc. My current car is a 10 year old fiesta that I like a lot, but it's just cost me another £700 to get through its last MOT. -
New car prices - Is it just me? 17 Oct 2020 (Forum)
It could be down to cheap labour regions becoming more expensive, fewer subsidies being handed out, Brexit, Covid 19 or realisationthat the bulk of non fleet purchases are via fancy instruments so that private cash purchases are not worth bothering about any more Even mundane small cars are shooting past well past £20k, add a few options that so many seem to find "essential" and even a blooming boring Skoda Kamiq can be over £40,000!! As for EVs, I can see they will never come down significantly in price unless someone like Musk throws a curved ball Maybe I'm just getting too old... -
Honest John's Motoring Agony Column 09-02-2019 Part 1 12 Feb 2019 (Forum)
Cleggy - a case to answer. Having some trouble understanding this. The car was sold with a 3mth warranty which suggests it was over 3yrs old at time of purchase. Indeed, the questioner says it was purchased with an MOT. Isn't emissions part of the MOT test? If the DPF had been cut in half and internals removed, should the car have passed an MOT? -
Nissan Qashqai - Roof storage 9 Jan 2019 (Forum)
I was looking on Amazon and they sell roof bags that go on the roof of the car and attach to the roof rales already on the car. I've asked the seller if it's suitable with a panoramic roof and they say it should be fine but I don't want to put 2 staircases in there and find it's damaged the exspensive glass roof (Not a option I would of chosen but came woth the car). -

Used car under 2k 3 Dec 2016 (Forum)
Looking to buy a car that's under 2k that hopefully can fit the following criteria: under 10-12 years old cheap to run - owned a VW Passat until now and 90% of the work on it I've done myself with parts being cheap and internet full of guides saloon/hatchback(5 doors)- definetly don't want it to be bigger size than passat 1.6 - 1.8 engine - owned only 1.9tdi engines until know and while fun I think I should go for a 1.6 to 1.8 to lower the fuel cost while not making the car feel too sluggish under 100k mileage reliable, maybe even fun to drive Am I asking for too much under 2k? -
Honda Civic - Honda rear brake calipers. 28 Nov 2016 (Forum)
I immediately refused this and they recontacted Honda and thy agreed to provide the parts free and the garage would fit them for £150.00. My dilema is, should a car only 4 years old and with only 25,000 miles need new brake calipers and if so should this not be classed as a vehicle defect and done free of charge. I might add that I bought the car brand new, any advice would be greatly appreciated. -
Daimler - partial V5 and long time since Road Tax paid 21 Apr 2016 (Forum)
Hello, i am in need of some help/advice. i have been offered and i am seriously thinking of buying a superbly kept Daimler, but the issue is that the actual owner/keeper's name it is not on the V5(old style one). I checked the car for outstanding debts, beeing stolen and such and it comes out that is clear of any trouble, scrapping, exporting, financing issues and that the last V5 issued for the car is the one i am actually holding in 1988.
