  • Evil automobile 12 Aug 2002 (Forum)
When I collected it I was told it was 'a bit tricky to start when hot', which turned out to be an understatement. I had to stop for petrol twice (it only does 10-12 mpg) and both times I almost ran the battery flat trying to get the old bitch to fire up again. Apologies to all the people at South Mimms services who got deafened yesterday evening when it finally fired and I revved it a few times to clear the plugs.
  • Shed some light, please 14 Nov 2001 (Forum)
The nearside headlamp unit has 2 covers, 1 to protect the bulb and one, seemingly to protect the first cover in the event of battery explosion or some other unlikely event. The golf uses H7 bulbs for main and dip so the plan was to rob a sound main bulb and fit it for dip beam use. The main beam bulb cover doesn't so much give access to the bulb as reveal a wire-filled tunnel where you can just see the back of the bulb if you've got a mirror and some imagination.
  • Nissan Leaf - Leafing my wallet alone! 18 Apr 2025 (Forum)
I see new VW ID3’s sitting at our local dealer at well over £30k and that’s just daft. A new big battery Leaf is closing in on £35k according to the local Nissan dealer who tried unsuccessfully to convince me of its value. I do however see the economic argument of what we have here. A good used Nissan Leaf at under £15,000 can make for an excellent commuter car or taxi.
  • 4 months with the Superb iV 5 Mar 2021 (Forum)
So far its all good, look forward to seeing how it does on a long holiday trip in "hybrid" mode all the way. A full battery should give some help for about 300km (less than 1/2 way there) based on the dash so will it beat the 1.4 TSi's 53 mpg over a week. If rules allow travel we will see later in the year. Problem is there is no chance of charging at the lodge and whilst there are a few free points locally I would bet they are in use when we get there.
  • Clio Mk2 Phase 1 - 2001 - Clio No power to fuel pump - Fuse? Relay? Diagram? 2 Sep 2024 (Forum)
2001 Clio Mk2 Phase 1 - 2001 Petrol This car sat for 5 years unused. I recently started it with a fully charged battery. It started after a few seconds. I drove it around the block for a few minutes. All was fine, except brakes need freed up. A few days later someone else tried to start it but failed.
  • Peugeot 508 - Peugeot 508 2019 engine and clutch failure 2 Nov 2023 (Forum)
An incredible amount of money and I know of no car outside a Porsche 911 that will cost so much. To further irritation, they are replacing the battery at £175 and the robbing swines at Peugeot breakdown assist charged me £96 for a 2nd tow as the dealer was shut at the time! Peugeot have declined any goodwill and have said it is a pure wear and tear item.
  • Ford Cmax zetec 2008 petrol - Help, diagnostic puzzle 20 Sep 2021 (Forum)
Our 2008 cmax 1.8 zetec petrol with duratorq engine has had to have a new alternator and battery along with an alternator belt. The car came back fine (6 years of owning and no other problens). Within 24 hours the car was in limp mode with engine management lights on and warning lights. The garage took it back and put it on the diagnostics we had 12 faults, they repeated the test 3 further times with only the accelerate pedal position sensor coming in every time.
  • Tesla Model S - Tesla 9 Aug 2021 (Forum)
There is no way I will be able to afford a new one, so used would be the only option. I have faith in the batteries, but the rest of the car? Some simple maintenance/repair jobs seem to be very expensive indeed. Maybe a model 3 when the kids have left home?

  • What is the point of a Hybrid 25 Feb 2020 (Forum)
Looked about the same size as the Pulsar, similar power (180 against 190) but much better mpg. Then I read this weeks Autocar report of their long term test car. The hybrid battery robs boot space reducing it to 313 litres and makes carrying even a space saver impossible. By comparison our Fabia has a 350 litre boot and a full size spare fits under the floor, no points for the Corolla.

This is just to show that it works, and that it has a range of at least 30 foot it has 2 relays , so maxed out, It can control two  10a 12v outlets  As it arrives £6 all in , from my man in the East ;) https://ibb.co/fi7B1m and as an added bonus, the remote looks like a Minion in his big underpants :) https://ibb.co/fn3Jgm This is how I've wired it, as my cig lighter is constant 12v  but you could just tap into a heavy duty 12v source https://ibb.co/dvALu6   first steps...very low standy amps . 11milli amps, if not less  https://youtu.be/ALoixRtiY4A    messing about, to test if it would run a 240v inverter disco bulb , incase you were wondering :) and yes, I did take the video with a potato :) https://youtu.be/A7-cCBro4sY I am trying a spare battery..as the heated seats take 2.5-3 amps  and can charge it on the fly https://ibb.co/bsZKnR https://ibb.co/jzSGZ6  Anywho, just to show that it lends itself to other applications.
  • Any - Hard Shoulders 30 Jun 2016 (Forum)
I believe that by the car being at an 'unusal angle' approaching traffic may be more likely to notice it 3. I invested £20 in an emergency amber LED magnetic beacon - very bright, doesn't drain the battery - and put on the hi-vis. Anything to help the 'zombie' drivers see me and keep clear.
  • peugeot 306 hdi dt (99) - fuel problem, starting and running 4 Jun 2015 (Forum)
It seems worst when its wet or damp. Now it keeps going into limp mode and wont go above 2300rpm. If i disconnect the battery and leave it for a period of time say 24hrs, it seems to reset itself and run as normal and like its old self. then 30mins into the journey or the next time i start it any of the above problems might surface.
  • Golf 1.4 TSi 59 plate - Starting issues 19 May 2015 (Forum)
The first time it went in they replaced the camshaft sensor, the second time it went back they decided it was the battery, the third time (currently with them now) they can't find a fault and therefore would like a customer demonstration! Given that it is so random as to when it decides not to start I have politely told them that is not possible.
  • Mercedes-Benz E-Class W210 - Heater/Blower Problems on my Merc W210 (98) 16 Feb 2015 (Forum)
I have replaced the glow plugs less than a year ago and I have also replaced the standard battery with a more powerful one to help when this happens but I really want to get this sorted and apart from these issues, the car is superb in every other way!
  • 1996 peugeot 2.5 Di - No glow plug light - LDV CONVOY 14 Nov 2014 (Forum)
After having my ignition switch replaced - wires soldered - i have been intermittingly having my glow plug light not come on when trying to start my engine  I did replace the plugs as one was shot - (went to start it no light) started with wire from battery to plug for a few seconds - a day or so later light had come back on by itself , ran sweet as for a few months , then once again no light  Breakdown started with easy start - once gain a day or so later came back on it's own ran ok for months - today breakdown comes out , started eventually with some easy start  ( I want it fixing properly) told easy start is bad news  The thing is is am suspecting that it might be a wiring fault as i lost my speedo after the ignition was wired in - the needle use to bounce - no trip meter and no milage being clocked up - after a few weeks my trip meter and milage started to work intermittenly again  So i am unsure what it could be - ie simple as just a broken wire or a relay has failed    It has the EN55 i believe as is the non turbo if that helps - can anyone suggest anything    I do have a test meter but never used one before as not sure what settings to put it on - sorry if sound a bit thick but just started to do my own mechanics - not to bad with them as managed to change the clutch cable the other day - is a good van , has not given me much greif except this slight problem crops up once in a while    Cheers mike
  • Renault Master 1998 2.8td - Diesel not starting 15 Jul 2014 (Forum)
Hi guys. After some help.  My master refuses to start!  Right, the battery is good. Its turning over freely and quickly. There is no horrible smoke. When the van is running its only normal black smoke under load. There is no evident power loss when running. The van used to start instantly until last winter and then it started taking longer.
  • Ford Focus 2002 1.6 pet - Ford focus 02 - To change cat or not? 7 Apr 2014 (Forum)
I'm suspecting its the cat but I don't want to start spending money changing bits unnecessarily, so I would be very interested to hear anybody elses thoughts... Error code: P0420 Dashboard trick: DTC9318, battery and alternator have good voltages (also read that this is consistent with a knackered cat) It looks like the front Lambda has been replaced fairly recently with a genuine ford part, maybe the previous owner was trying to fix this problem...before passing it onto gullible me!
  • Focus 1.8 TDCi - 2002 Focus 1.8 TDCi poor starting 22 Feb 2014 (Forum)
The car has done 95k, original glow plugs, DMF and starter motor were replaced at about 70k. There is none of the clunking/crunching that occurred when the DMF was giving up. Battery is approximately 2-3 years old. The cold weather is making me think glow plugs or waxing of the fuel (does this still occur?), however the fact it initially seems to start and then stalls makes me think it is a fuelling issue (perhaps an air leak?).
  • 2004 Ford Focus CMAX 1.8 Duratec HE Petrol Manual - Brake Light Fault 14 Dec 2013 (Forum)
I refitted both switches with the brake pedal in its home position and reconnected the battery. Cleared fault codes and started the car, this time I get code: P0703 Torque Converter Brake Switch B Circuit Malfunction If I monitor PID 'brake pedal' on the code reader, I get a correct on/off reading when the pedal is pressed.
