  • Buying a "defunct" reg plate 11 Mar 2008 (Forum)
When I was little (early 70s) my father had a reg plate that for no particular reason became quite special to us as a family and he transferred into another car. It seems not to be registered to any car now so I assume it is now defunct. Is there anyway of getting the DVLA to resurrect it? It would make a sentimental gift for the old boy.

  • Today is 57-day - so what? 7 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Spent a lot of time helping my employer to get the '57' cars finally ready for the big customer onslaught this morning. Is there any actual advantage gained by the new reg. system compared with the old? - we now have 2 blips during the year instead of one, and a massive distorting factor in the car idustry and market.
  • Towing scrap vehicles 17 May 2007 (Forum)
I have recently noticed a recovery vehicle parking at night with what is obviously a car on its way to the scrap yard on the back. It is the type of truck where the vehicle on tow has its front wheels suspended in a cradle and its rear wheels on the road. I realise that these old cars need to be transported to the scrap yard but is it legal to park them in the street overnight?
  • dare i mention odometers? 24 Jul 2006 (Forum)
The customer services team for my make of car, a european car, one year old, claim that prior to the pdi inspection the uk insert is calibrated in kilometers. This is changed to miles at pdi. Any comments? Also whilst on the subject - if I accidentally zero the odometer is it possible to restore the mileage figure and if so how might this be achieved?

  • vw passat batt life 24 Mar 2004 (Forum)
How long can I expect the battery to last? It is just comming up on 4 years old the car starts no problem, but if it's not started for a couple of days it sounds if it is cranking a bit slow and the stop sign on the multi fuction display illuminates briefly. The car is a 2000 passat 115pd it has done around 48,000 miles.
  • Mercedes Roof Boxes 24 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Is there any way of attaching a roof box to a car which does not have roof rails or 'gutters' in which, in the old days, the feet of a roof box frame could stand? It is a Mercedes that I am interested in but as many cars don't have rails and none have gutters the question has a broader application.

  • Best used car under £3000 for young(20) driver 30 Mar 2021 (Forum)
Probably a long shot. Looking for a used petrol car for a 20yr old driver. As she does some motorway driving she would prefer a 1.4 unless someone can suggest a powerful enough 1.2 ( she has been on our insurance as a named driver on 3 different cars even a used golf gti so she's a very good driver )
  • Small car recommendation 15 May 2018 (Forum)
I am starting a new job that will involve driving 100 motorway miles a day. I need to buy a new car that is economical, suitable for motorways and that my recently passed 18 year old can drive without me having to sell a kidney to insure. My budget is about £3500 I was thinking possibly a Toyota Aygo but I would be grateful for any recommendations as I know very little about small cars.
  • Why less older cars. 22 Feb 2017 (Forum)
Just driving to work this morning and I overtook a Y reg 1983? Ford Escort that seemed completely fine. Just started to make me wonder why we see less older cars on the roads today bearing in mind that cars rust less, engines can do 100k plus miles and break down less frequently. I am suprised. nowadays to see anything over 15 years old...
  • Automatic City Car/Hatchback. Suggestions? 22 Nov 2016 (Forum)
I'm thinking about replacing my four year old Skoda Fabia. I'd like a city car/hatchback that is big enough for a child, is fun to drive and pretty reliable. I was contemplating a VW Golf but am put off by the price and reliability issues. Most people I speak to say I should go for a Japanese car.
