ABSCONNED?

My VW Touran 1.9TDI ESP light came on in February and sure enough I needed a new ABS control unit. This was diagnosed in March at my local VW dealership where my car has been fully maintained since I bought it new. The car was then 3yrs 9months old and had done very low mileage of 25,000. Initially VW offered to pay 50% of the £1,500 cost to repair. With a lot of phone calls to dealer and customer care they raised their offer to 70% but that is still a pretty hefty bill for a known fault I feel. Having read your article in Saturdays Telegraph I phoned my local dealer again, who informed me my car too old now to be offered the 100% regardless of mileage, VW maintained etc and they implied the longer I leave it the less VW would be willing to pay. I would be grateful for any advice you could give me to resolve this issue with VW.

Below is the official response from VW UK. But I did not receive it until September 2009, after VW profits had been announced in August. VW has confirmed that the offer also applies to Golfs, but readers are finding that the 100% contribution is only for cars up to 4 years old. Older than that, they may be offered 35%, negotiable up to 70%, and lesser amounts of the car has not been exclusively VAG maintained. Other cars with the same problem are Audi A3s, SEAT Alteas, SEAT Leons, SEAT Toledos, Skoda Octavias, BMW 1-Series, BMW 3-Series, Volvo S40/V50s and Mazda 3s. Goodwill contributions for repairs on these have varied from 0% to 100%. “We are aware of some issues affecting certain models within the Volkswagen passenger car range with the ABS control module. Reported instances with the Touran model where we suspect an ABS module failure and the vehicle has service history within the Volkswagen Retailer Network, customers will receive a 100 per cent contribution towards the cost of the repairs. In addition, regardless of the vehicle’s history, all cases will be dealt with in a sympathetic manner. We have been in communication with VOSA on this issue and we agree with their view that this is not a safety issue. Drivers are warned of an issue with a clear warning light and are advised to take their vehicle to their local retailer. In all instances the ESP may not function when the warning light illuminates however the ABS function remains operational and the fundamental safety of the vehicle is unaffected.”
