Hyundai i10 or Peugeot 108 - Please help: Buying first car 19 Apr 2015 (Forum)
Hi, I am a newly qualified driver looking to buy my first car. I have only basic knowledge of what to look out for having only really driven a Citreon DS3 1.6 litre diesel, therefore I was hoping for some advice here. I am interested in two cars, both only 1 year old, reasonably cheap to run and with low mileage: a Hyundai i10 1.2 litre 4 cylinder car and a Peugeot 108 1 litre 3 cylinder. -
any - Buying Secondhand Cars. Easy !!! 20 Mar 2015 (Forum)
2. the easiest way is make sure the person selling the car will let you use the internet. Then just tax the car before driving it away, it is now so easy to tax online. Your insurance company should be informed ( as had always been the case). 3. -
The courtesy of `comrade` vans and commercials 11 Nov 2008 (Forum)
The odd neck turns in traffic with the old Punto car and you occasionally detect that supercilious little lip curl of self satisfaction of being embedded , commode-esque, in the comfort of a `proper car`. ;) -
She's leaving home - the insurance dilemma 16 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Our daughter departs for Uni in a few weeks. Her car will remain at home. As for any 18 year old, the insurance cost is high and she can't afford to continue to pay for that whilst away. The simplest solution would be for the car to remain taxed and insured but not used. -
Changing Engines Mid Car 19 May 2004 (Forum)
Is it just a case of pulling the old one out,and whacking the new one in or is it more technical (I have a feeling it may) and how expensive is it to buy an engine? I understand it would vary from car to car and before anyone panics, I'm not on about putting a 2.5 V6 in there - I'm not swapping the engine at all - I'm just curious Many thanks -- "Ah...beer - my only weakness - my achilles heel if you will" -
New Astra 1.8 CDX Problems Update 9 Sep 2002 (Forum)
In the old backroom archive I posted about a friend of mine who was having driveability problems with the above car. After issuing an ultimatum my friend persuaded Vauxhall to take back the car in exchange for a new 1.6 (my friend having no confidence in the 1.8 by now). -

Any - Advice needed to buy first car in the UK 2 Jan 2016 (Forum)
Hello, Thank you for reading my thread. I am searching online for a while now to find which car is best for me, I drove for ten years but not in the UK, and I found this forums very promising. I am looking for a cheap to run car, I do care about the size and look of the car as well, so basically I am not interested in very small cars like old ford fiesta or yaris. -
Porsche 911 964 - Insuring cars for long-term use in Mainland Europe 27 Feb 2012 (Forum)
My family and I moved to Berlin in August 2012. I have an old Porsche 911 that I would like to bring out to Germany for the duration of our stay (2-3 years). I have spoken with two insurance companies, both of whom have informed me that I cannot insure the car for overseas use for typically longer than one month and that if I want to keep the car for longer than this in Berlin I must re-register it in Germany. -
Bought a shocker ! Advice please.... 3 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Hi All, My parents recently bought a car from a Chrysler Jeep main dealer, its a year or two old. Within a week, it had broken down. They supplied a courtesy car and collected the jeep and repaired it. It turned out to be the flywheel, apparently, but the car was returned in working order. -
Trolleys and car-parks 22 Nov 2002 (Forum)
I have another noddy question for the venerable Back-Roomers (I was delighted after my last query about the difference between off-side and nearside that HJ Himself answered the question with some incredulity in the hallowed pages of the Satursay DT) Anyway, just suppose that someone should be pushing a heavy trolley load of tiles in a DIY shop car-park whilst at the same time trying to placate a 2yr old boy who has just been removed from the Thomas Tank Engine ride-on when said trolley should bash into an adjacent car. Further suppose that the owner of said car should get awfully stroppy and start demanding the trolley pusher's car insurance details. -
The final raceday 5 Sep 2001 (Forum)
The hot rods featured the RED CAR that attends every meeting, I think it's a small Datsun/Nissan (Cherry?) with RWD and a 2 litre plus engine. The owner appears to own only one set of tyres....slicks. The 12 year old and I attended the previous meeting (which was wet) and the RED CAR managed a grand total of 1/2 lap (out of 6?) -
any - best website to look for a new car 29 Nov 2020 (Forum)
Are there any other websites backroomers use when they start their new (second hand) vehicle search? i'm after used approved, up to 3 years old millage not to much of an issue as don't to huge millage not fussed on petrol or diesel aslong as its ULEZ compliant. I know my millage at around 10k puts me in petrol territory i've never had a problem with past diesel cars as they always get a good regular run as we live near a fast moving duel carriageway and are always driving along it to get anywhere from where we live. not sure on what car yes as undecided but to date in the 16 years i've been driving I've never bought a lemon. -
Kia Sportage - car insurance 17 Jul 2020 (Forum)
This time extra to pay was about £40.oo but I had been on a comparison website leading me to their website as a new customer and the premium for the new car was the same as my old car, so it was admin fee PLUS a sneaky price rise. Objected and was told, cancel the policy online, and take out a new policy online and we refund the balance, (no fee) and you get the new policy for the screen price. -

what am I looking for ? 12 Mar 2019 (Forum)
plenty of older cars fit the bill , I am getting so fed up with finding small turbo engines that I am considering buying an older car in preference (immaculate 1.6 Auris with low mileage 10 reg) Otherwise I would be looking for something up to about 3 years old that doesn't have to be exciting. -

Peugeot 207 (2006 - ) - 07 1.4 Car Needs to be revved when starting! 3 Jul 2017 (Forum)
I always have to press the gas to get the engine to start. The starter motor seems fine as the engine is turning over, but its asif the car is failing to squirt a little juice in and i have to do this manually with the peddle. I wouldn't think it would be anything serious as the car is not very old, has only done 20,000. Is there a sensor that tells the injectors to start working when you first start the engine, i used to have a peugeot 306 and that used to rev to about 2500rpm when you initially started it and then settled down to idle. -
Peugeot 207 - Gaps in MOT on used car. 31 Jan 2017 (Forum)
The only problem seems to be that 2 year gap between MOTs from 2014 to 2016. Could a car over 4 year old have had an MOT and been given a 2 year expiry date on that MOT? It passes it 2016. Just seems odd! Thanks. -
Used car suggestions ? 28 Sep 2016 (Forum)
Hi, i am looking for another car as my old 1.6l breadbin shaped civic is problem-matic and too revvy on fast roads.I do about 12k miles per year probably about 30% of that short trips and 70% long trips.I spend quite a long time on motorways and A roads. The car needs to be big enough to carry a mountain bike inside and have an average sized boot will do.My budget would be about 6k.Im looking for something petrol that will be much better geared for cruising and do >40mpg on a long run.Not fussy about performance rather have something economical.
