  • Risk of explosion? 17 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Like many other motorists, it's second nature for me to use a mobile to take calls while I am driving. The subject of using mobiles while driving has been aired before, but what about petrol stations? I pulled into a petrol station recently, phone in shirt pocket and earpiece in place, deep in conversation.
  • Driving old clunkers. Why not? 28 Jan 2002 (Forum)
Purring along the Chester High Road at 70 mph on the Wirral last night in my 10 year old Volvo 740 SE, I wondered how a newer, more modern car would feel. How...
  • Audi 20V hydraulic tappets 26 Jan 2002 (Forum)
One of the guys at work commented on it the other day. So far I have been put off by the horrendous mechanical complexity (2 camshafts, 20 valves, belt drive to one cam and then a chain drive to the other one). Has anyone done a tappet change on the 20V engine, and is it a DIY job? The Haynes manual is a little vague. The car could also use a new set of shock absorbers, so I'll probably take it off the road for a while, and buy a cheap car (NOT Martin Glover's Peugeot 309) to keep me mobile while I sort out the Audi at a leisurely pace.

We finished up at the same point at the same time, so he gained nothing. Just shows how driving style affects wear and tear.
  • Chipmunks 3 Dec 2001 (Forum)
Hi all, I have a really annoying squeak coming from the back of my astra - it seems to do it while driving along bumpy roads etc or when coming off the drive etc. It sounds like I have a family of talkative chipmunks on the parcel shelf but after further inspection its seems I have not. Ive tried putting tape round the parcel shelf pins, checked the boot is shut tight with no movement, nothing seems loose, but its still there, and its still annoying me.
  • Beware Car Supermarkets 30 Nov 2001 (Forum)
We all want cars at the same price as Europeans but car supermarkets and personal imports are not the answer because right-hand drive cars for other markets are usually lower specification, The only answer is to remove the block exemption and remove fleet discounts, which are still up to 25%. The other answer is for the UK to switch to left-hand drive, which may well be cheaper in the medium and long term.

  • Speed Camera Revenue 8 Mar 2001 (Forum)
Chatting to friends in transport research they believe that educating drivers out of the belief that motorways are just 3 cruising lanes dependent on what kind of vehicle you drive and how old you are, would significantly improve traffic flow to an extent where proposed lane widening could be cancelled. What do people think?
  • Practical 2+2 sports car ideas 28 Jan 2001 (Forum)
Up to about £12K ish. It will need to have a small rear seat, some luggage space and I would prefer rear wheel drive. We thought a Porsche 911, but it will be rather old for that money and big bills loom in my mind. A Fiat Coupe, but that is front wheel drive. I don't mind working on it (I built the Westfield), but I would prefer not to be doing that most of the time!.
